The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.
The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.
Determining the world's largest cities depends on which definitions of city are used. The United Nations uses three definitions for what constitutes a city, as not all cities may be classified using the same criteria. Cities may be defined by the extent of their urban area, the metropolitan region, and the city proper.
A city can be defined as a conditionally contiguous urban area, without regard to territorial or other boundaries inside an urban area. UNICEF defines urban area as follows:
A city can be defined by the habits of its demographic population, as by metropolitan area, labour market area, or similar in a metropolitan area. UNICEF defines metropolitan area as follows:
A city can be defined by its administrative boundaries (city proper). World Urbanization Prospects, a UN publication, defines population of a city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city or controlled directly from the city by a single authority." UNICEF defines city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city, e.g., Washington, D.C.". A city proper is a locality defined according to legal or political boundaries and an administratively recognised urban status that is usually characterised by some form of local government. Cities proper and their boundaries and population data may not include suburbs.

Support CaspianReport through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CaspianReport BAKU - In the last couple of months, the media headlines have been dominated by the presence of refugees in major European cities. The rush of refugees to Europe has caused considerable diplomatic and domestic turmoil. Refugees from Syria, followed by African and Balkan nations, form the vast majority of the people seeking asylum. In most cases, the refugees pay large sums of money for a chance to reach Europe, and in many cases it’s a life risking gamble. The massive arrival of asylum seekers in Europe is not something new. Migration in and out of Europe has taken shape throughout history. However, the current human flow into Europe is different from historic migrations, and such unprecedented events carry with...
Scotland is coming out of the European Union with the rest of the UK. That's despite the fact Scots voted to remain. So what happens next? Allan Little travels to the coast and whisky-producing glens of Moray, the part of the country which came closest to voting Leave. There, he finds out what that decision could mean for workers and business owners. But there's a bigger question: what will it mean for the other union, that of the United Kingdom? Europe: Scotland's Dilemma asks whether Brexit could break up Britain too.

In the past few years the budget Brussels allocates to controlling the borders of Europe has increased by billions. The reason: terrorism and the growing numbers of migrants. After the Turkey Deal, agreements are now also being made with countries such as Niger in Africa. Just like their neighbours, they will have to dissuade, take back and stop migrants for us, in exchange for significant financial support. In this way, European borders are moving ever further outward. VPRO Backlight goes to the Sahara desert to take a closer look at Europe’s southernmost border station: Niger. With: Martin Lemberg-Pedersen, Ibrahim Diallo, Olivier Neola, Rhissa Feltou (mayor of Agadez) and President of Niger Mahamadou Issoufou Originally broadcasted by VPRO in 2017. © VPRO Backlight February 2017 VPR...

Britons sent shockwaves across Europe and beyond with their vote to exit the European Union. The Brexit victory stunned the country's political elite and roiled financial markets. The question now is, what's next for London, Europe's largest financial center? With the pound plunging, some banks in the City London's financial district are considering a move to other financial hotspots such as Paris, Dublin or Frankfurt. An en masse migration of financial institutions would be devastating not only for the City, but for metropolitan London and the UK as a whole. Banking and finance contribute more to the UK economy than any other sector. A bank exodus also would mean the loss of highly-paid jobs and thousands of middle-class workers whose pay checks support London's small businesses. Whil...
