In this episode of Experience Points, Mat and Tom walkthrough developing a character for roleplay sessions. Creating a believable name, giving the character a three-dimensional backstory, drawing the character and voicing the character. Hopefully this will help new and even established roleplayers as they head down the rabbithole of tabletop RPG playing. His upbringing was poor as his mother would often get into bar fights at the tavern she “serviced”. William’s younger brother, “Benedict (Benni)” looked up to William who practically raised Benni, when William was 14 his mother sold him to the army where he was beaten, conditioned and trained before spending 20 years in service as an infantrymen. Whilst William was in service with the army, he was posted to Copperplate pass, where bandits had taken up fort there and were killing people in their hundreds, during the war William was kidnapped and tortured by a small group of bandits who cut off his arm when he refused to give up information. Upon cutting his arm off, William was able to free himself and he beat the three bandits to death with his own severed arm and made his escape before collapsing in the desert. Upon awaking, he found himself in a hospital bed with a new bionic arm, courtesy of “the council” and given an honorable discharge from service. When William returned to Irontown he found the town was extremely different to what it once was, he hated the smell and the sight of everyone. His brother Benni had become a drunk and Williams mother had passed away of Yellow-Fever. William took up to being a gun-for-hire and was quickly hired to kill the local sheriff, which he carried out, no questions asked. William was not paid for the job and tracked down his employer, who turned out to be his brother Benni who owned the Sheriff a lot of money. When Benni refused to pay William, William crushed benni’s windpipe with his bionic arm before slumping in the corner and weeping. William was arrested for the murder of his brother and was told he faced the noose or exile from Irontown, he chose the latter and left before sunrise. After a few years of wandering the desert holding up passers-by, Billy began to work under a preceptor unknowingly and was told he was collecting the bounties from local Warlords. After a lucrative 5 months, Billy discovered that he was under the memetic influence of the preceptor and those which he’d killed were in fact children. As William was snapped from the memetic probe which shackled him, he wept one solitary tear, as he had flashbacks of slaying innocent children, he raised his revolver and blew the preceptors head clean off, looking in his satchel Billy saw that the “tokens” which he’d earned under the preceptor were in fact just pieces of old tattered paper. Billy set the old paper alight with his cigar and threw the fire onto the preceptor. Turning around, Billy walked into the sunset towards a group of shadowy figures on the horizon.
