Puerto Rico (English /ˌpɔːrtə ˈriːkoʊ/ or /ˌpwɛərtə ˈriːkoʊ/;Spanish: [ˈpweɾto ˈriko], locally also [ˈpwelto ˈχiko; ˈʀ̥iko]), officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, literally the "Free Associated State of Puerto Rico"), is a United States territory located in the northeastern Caribbean. Puerto Rico is an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands. The capital and largest city is San Juan. The territory does not observe daylight saving time, and its official languages are Spanish, which is predominant, and English. The island's population is approximately 3.4 million.

Puerto Rico's rich history, tropical climate, diverse natural scenery, renowned traditional cuisine and attractive tax incentives make it a popular destination for visitors from around the world. Its location in the Caribbean, combined with centuries of colonization and subsequent migration, has made Puerto Rican culture a distinct melting pot of Amerindian, Spanish, African, and North American influences.

Ricky Rosselló

Ricardo Antonio "Ricky" Rosselló Nevares (born March 7, 1979) is a college professor, scientist and political advocate who is a candidate for the New Progressive Party nomination for Governor of Puerto Rico in the 2016 elections. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan, Rosselló is the son of former Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Rosselló.

In 2010, Rosselló founded the political advocacy group Boricua ¡Ahora Es! that supports a change in the political status of Puerto Rico. After several years of political advocacy, on September 20, 2015 Rosselló announced he would seek the New Progressive Party's nomination for Governor of Puerto Rico at a rally in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.

Early life and education

Rosselló was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the son of Pedro Rosselló, a doctor, and Maga Nevares. Rosselló attended Colegio Marista and during his high school years, was an athlete, three-time junior tennis champion in Puerto Rico and the first Puerto Rican to be selected to the International Mathematical Olympiads. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering and economics, and a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan. As a researcher in college, Rosselló focused on adult stem cell research and worked on the Human Genome Project.

Governor of Puerto Rico

The Governor of Puerto Rico is the head of government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and by its nature constitutes the executive branch of the government of Puerto Rico. He is also the commander-in-chief of the commonwealth's military forces, the Puerto Rico National Guard.

The Governor has a duty to enforce state laws, to convene the Legislative Assembly, the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Legislative Assembly, to appoint government officers, to appoint Justices, and to grant pardons. Since 1948, the Governor has been elected by the people of Puerto Rico. Prior to that, the Governor was appointed either by the King of Spain (1510–1898) or the President of the United States (1898–1948).

Article IV of the Constitution of Puerto Rico vests the executive power on the Governor and empowers him with the faculty to appoint officers. Law No. 104 of 1956 empowers him with the faculty to delegate functions. These two faculties in conjunction allow the Governor to delegate most of his functions while continuing to be the maximum officer and head of government.

Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan

The Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan is the appointed Head of State of the provincial government in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The governor is designated by the Prime Minister and is normally regarded a ceremonial post. However, throughout the history of Pakistan, the powers of the provincial governors were vastly increased, every time the provincial assemblies were dissolved and the administrative role came under direct control of the governors.

The seat of governor in Gilgit-Baltistan was started on 16 September 2009.

The current Governor is Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan, who took over on 20 November 2015.
