Lastly, the angered spirit of an innocent woman falsely accused of witchcraft who was killed here is said to reside here as well, her shade shrouded in wild black hair and a long black dress is often spotted walking along the polished floors, or sleeking down the stairs. 2 - LaLaurie Mansion Madame Marie Delphine Macarty was born in 1780 to a privileged life of wealth and power. She married three times, in 1825, her final husband gave her a three-story mansion at 1140 Royal Street and a new last name, LaLaurie. Inside her quiet domicile, the socialite lived as a prominent member of the French Quarter in New Orleans, that is, until a mysterious fire broke out in 1834. The mansion was salvaged, but her slaves were found to be starved, tortured, chained up, and much worse. Rumours flooded the creole streets of horrific slave conditions. One account claims LaLaurie had a slave's bones broken and then reset, forcing the slave to walk like a crab for the rest of his days. Stories spread of slaves who had their skin peeled off. Another tale told of a slave with a hole drilled through their head with a spoon sticking out. The Maddening Madame brutalised, tortured and killed dozens, if not hundreds, of slaves. And to this very day, their screams can still be heard rattling the attic door and echoing off the polished walls. The ghost of the famed villainess is also rumoured to stalk the famed blood-stained grounds. 1 - Amityville House In 1974, Ronald DeFeo burst into Harry's Bar of Amityville New York, declaring his parents had been shot.
