San Mateo, Spanish for Saint Matthew, is the name for many places:
Daily Journal may refer to:
San Mateo County (/ˌsæn məˈteɪ.oʊ/ SAN mə-TAY-oh; Spanish for "Saint Matthew") is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 718,451. The county seat is Redwood City.
San Mateo County is included in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area, the nine counties bordering San Francisco Bay. It covers most of the San Francisco Peninsula. San Francisco International Airport is located at the northern end of the county, and Silicon Valley begins at the southern end. The county's built-up areas are mostly suburban with some areas being very urban, and are home to several corporate campuses.
San Mateo County was formed in 1856 after San Francisco County, one of the state's 18 original counties since California's statehood in 1850, was split apart. Until 1856, San Francisco's city limits extended west to Divisadero Street and Castro Street, and south to 20th Street. In response to the lawlessness and vigilantism that escalated rapidly between 1855 and 1856, the California government decided to divide the county. A straight line was then drawn across the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula just north of San Bruno Mountain. Everything south of the line became the new San Mateo County while everything north of the line became the new consolidated City and County of San Francisco, to date the only consolidated city-county in California. San Mateo County then annexed part of northern Santa Cruz County in 1868.
The San Mateo Daily Journal is a daily newspaper published six days a week, Monday through Friday plus a combo weekend edition. The newspaper is distributed throughout San Mateo County, California.
According to the newspaper itself, "It is the mission of the Daily Journal to be the most accurate, fair and relevant local news source for those who live, work or play on the MidPeninsula. By combining local news coverage, analysis and insight with the latest business, lifestyle, state, national and world news, we seek to provide our readers with the highest quality information resource in San Mateo County. Our pages belong to you, our readers, and we choose to reflect the diverse character of this dynamic and ever changing community."
The Daily Journal's publisher is Jerry Lee and its editor is Jon Mays. A 2007 poll on its website www.smdailyjournal.com indicated its readers consider it to be politically moderate. It is one of the few independently owned and operated newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Wells Fargo & Company is an American multinational banking and financial services holding company which is headquartered in San Francisco, California, with "hubquarters" throughout the country. It is the third largest bank in the U.S. by assets and the largest bank by market capitalization. Wells Fargo surpassed Citigroup Inc. to become the third-largest U.S. bank by assets at the end of 2015. Wells Fargo is the second largest bank in deposits, home mortgage servicing, and debit cards. Wells Fargo ranked 10th among the Forbes Global 2000 (2015) and the 30th largest company in the United States, according to Fortune 500 (2015).
In 2007 it was the only bank in the United States to be rated AAA by S&P, though its rating has since been lowered to AA- in light of the financial crisis of 2007–08. The firm's primary U.S. operating subsidiary is national bank Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., which designates its main office as Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Wells Fargo in its present form is a result of a merger between San Francisco–based Wells Fargo & Company and Minneapolis-based Norwest Corporation in 1998 and the subsequent 2008 acquisition of Charlotte-based Wachovia. Following the mergers, the company transferred its headquarters to Wells Fargo's headquarters in San Francisco and merged its operating subsidiary with Wells Fargo's operating subsidiary in Sioux Falls.

In 1942 Navy lieutenant Ernest Cody and ensign Charles Adams piloted a blimp out of San Francisco into the Pacific, looking for Japanese subs. A few hours later the blimp drifted back to land, empty. The parachutes and life raft were in their proper places and the radio was in working order, but there was no trace of Cody or Adams. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the events of that strange day and delve into the inquest that followed. We'll also sample some unpublished items from Greg's trove of Futility Closet research and puzzle over a drink of water that kills hundreds of people. Forty years ago the bald eagle was in danger of extinction. In 1973, it was placed under protection of the Endangered Species Act. Shortly thereafter, Glenn Stewart teamed up with the Ventana Wildlife Society to create a bald eagle recovery plan for central California. Stewart and a team of biologists brought dozens of eagle chicks from Canada to Big Sur in an effort to reintroduce the iconic bird back to the Central Coast. Stewart told the San Mateo Daily Journal, "The goal for the reintroduction of bald eagles to the Central Coast was four pairs. We were looking at a pretty bleak scene out there. Now there are 26 pairs in the Bay Area alone." Part of the UC Santa Cruz Science on Tap series (https://sites.google.com/site/ucscwise/events/science-on-tap)
