I take to the ROOF of the Loft to demonstrate how to use a 5 way reflector effectively.
There are times where you have to get a shot no matter the time of day and the lighting conditions. In this situation we did not have access to a flash. Instead we had to use a 5 way reflector to, diffuses light, bounce light and reflect light into our subject.
It is really simple to bounce light back into your subject to act as a fill when needed. Its also easy to use the 5 way as a diffuser to cut down on the amount of light that may be hitting your subject.
Ideally if you have an assistant to hold the reflector for you you will be better off. If you dont have one just ask the model to hold it and see how that works.
This has been a QUICK TIP from the ROOF.

Are you trying to learn how to use a reflector properly? Can we all agree that the idea with portraits is to flatter someone - not to make them look bad. Right? TV shows, movies, and unfortunately even YouTube photographers seem to think it's really cool to do that low angle gold reflector that blinds your subject, makes ridiculously bright catchlights in the bottom of the eyes and puts shadows in weird places. This lighting does not make great portraits or modeling shots - in fact it makes people look ghoulish.
I get it - as a new or young photographer the first time you light somebodies face up so that it is golden yellow and three stops brighter than the background - it seems really cool - even if you are causing retina damage in your subjects eyes.
Many of you also take portraits indoors, maybe in a studio and maybe in your living room. Some of you use speedlights, some of you use continuous lighting, some of you use monolights…. how often do you place your main or key light below your subject if you are trying to create a flattering portrait?
Why would you suddenly do things differently just because you go outside to shoot - you wouldn’t - well - you shouldn’t. Lighting a flattering portrait outside - is no different than lighting a flattering portrait inside except that you have this one EXTREMELY bright light source that you can’t move or dial down at will - it’s called the sun - so you have to diffuse or re-direct it, but that is not an excuse to turn things upside down and put your key light below your subjects face.

Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire are a Canadian indie rock band based in Montreal, Quebec consisting of husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, along with Win's younger brother Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. The band's current touring line-up also includes former core member Sarah Neufeld, frequent collaborator Owen Pallett, two additional percussionists, Diol Edmond and Tiwill Duprate, and saxophonists Matt Bauder and Stuart Bogie.
Founded in 2001 by friends and classmates Win Butler and Josh Deu, the band came to prominence in 2004 with the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Funeral. Their second studio album, Neon Bible, won them the 2008 Meteor Music Award for Best International Album and the 2008 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. Their third studio album, The Suburbs, was released in 2010 to critical acclaim and commercial success. In 2013, Arcade Fire released their fourth album, Reflektor, and scored the feature film Her, for which band members William Butler and Owen Pallett were nominated in the Best Original Score category at the 86th Academy Awards. There are times where you have to get a shot no matter the time of day and the lighting conditions. In this situation we did not have access to a flash. Instead we had to use a 5 way reflector to, diffuses light, bounce light and reflect light into our subject. It is really simple to bounce light back into your subject to act as a fill when needed. Its also easy to use the 5 way as a diffuser to cut down on the amount of light that may be hitting your subject. Are you trying to learn how to use a reflector properly? Can we all agree that the idea with portraits is to flatter someone - not to make them look bad. Right? I get it - as a new or young photographer the first time you light somebodies face up so that it is golden yellow and three stops brighter than the background - it seems really cool - even if you are causing retina damage in your subjects eyes.
Many of you also take portraits indoors, maybe in a studio and maybe in your living room. Some of you use speedlights, some of you use continuous lighting, some of you use monolights…. how often do you place your main or key light below your subject if you are trying to create a flattering portrait?
Why would you suddenly do things differently just because you go outside to shoot - you wouldn’t - well - you shouldn’t. Lighting a flattering portrait outside - is no different than lighting a flattering portrait inside except that you have this one EXTREMELY bright light source that you can’t move or dial down at will - it’s called the sun - so you have to diffuse or re-direct it, but that is not an excuse to turn things upside down and put your key light below your subjects face.
