Ahmad Jamal (born Frederick Russell Jones, July 2, 1930) is an American jazz pianist, composer, group leader, and educator. For five decades, he has been one of the most successful small-group leaders in jazz.
Jamal was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began playing piano at the age of three, when his uncle Lawrence challenged him to duplicate what he was doing on the piano. Jamal began formal piano training at the age of seven with Mary Cardwell Dawson, whom he describes as greatly influencing him. His Pittsburgh roots have remained an important part of his identity ("Pittsburgh meant everything to me and it still does," he said in 2001) and it was there that he was immersed in the influence of jazz artists such as Earl Hines, Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, and Erroll Garner. Jamal also studied with pianist James Miller and began playing piano professionally at the age of fourteen, at which point he was recognized as a "coming great" by the pianist Art Tatum. When asked about his practice habits by a The New York Times critic, Jamal commented that, "I used to practice and practice with the door open, hoping someone would come by and discover me. I was never the practitioner in the sense of twelve hours a day, but I always thought about music. I think about music all the time."
Jamal (Arabic: جمال Jamāl/Ǧamāl ) is an Arabic masculine given name, meaning beauty. The use of this name is widespread across the Muslim world.
In Egypt the name is pronounced [ɡæˈmæːl] and so is normally spelled Gamal . Tunisians may spell it Jamel. In Turkish, the name is transliterated as Cemal, Albanian as Xhemal and in Bosnian as Džemal.
Ahmad, Ahmed or Ahmet are the principal transliterations of an Arabic given name, أحمد.
Ahmad comes from the Arabic triconsonantal root of Ḥ-M-D, meaning "highly praised", which in turn implies "one who constantly thanks God." Several Arabic names are derived from this root word.
The name Ahmad has its origins in a prophecy attributed to Jesus, in the Quran in Surah 61: As-Saff (The Ranks). Some Muslim scholars see the names parallel in the word 'Paraclete' in the biblical text. This view is not universal considering translations, meanings and etymology.
Regarding Ibn Ishaq's biography of Muhammad, the Sirat Asul Allah, Islamic scholar Alfred Guillaume wrote:
Other Arabic names from the same root include Mahmud, Ahmed, Hamed, Muhammad and Hamid. The name has one of the highest number of spelling variations in the world.
Here are three translations of the passage in question in Surat 61 verse 6:
- Sahih International
"I Love" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Tom T. Hall. It was released in October 1973 as the only single from the album, For the People in the Last Hard Town. The song would be Hall's most successful single and was his fourth number one on the U.S. country singles chart. The single spent two weeks at the top and a total of 15 weeks on the chart. "I Love" was Hall's only entry on the Top 40 peaking at number 12.
"I Love" was used, with altered lyrics, in a popular 2003 TV commercial for Coors Light.
The song was used in the film For No Good Reason.
"I Like", a parody version by Heathen Dan, was released on the 1983 compilation album The Rhino Brothers Present the World's Worst Records.
Israel Crosby (January 19, 1919 – August 11, 1962) was a jazz double-bassist born in Chicago, Illinois, best known as member of the Ahmad Jamal trio from 1957 to 1962. A close contemporary of Jimmy Blanton, Crosby is less considered as a pioneer, but his interactive playing in Jamal's trio and that of George Shearing shows how easily and fluently he displayed a modern approach to jazz double bass. He is credited with taking the first recorded bass solo on his 1935 recording of "Blues of Israel" with drummer Gene Krupa (Prestige PR 7644) when he was only 16.
Crosby died of a heart attack two months after joining the Shearing Quintet.

Like all jazzmen, Ahmad Jamal is an improviser. But he is always personally opposed to the concept of improvisation as a differentiating jazz from the others musics : "All musicians improvise - Mozart improvised. It is a fundamental error ( that's a misconception ) to believe that improvisation is specific to jazz.

AJ's rendition of the Herbie Hancock classic. Song has been sampled quite a few times in hip-hop. I really like Jamal's version, a very complex and melodic song. Oh and if anyone knows the 2 chords at the beginning I'd love to know.

"Poinciana" is a song to music by Nat Simon and lyrics by Buddy Bernier written in 1936. The tune is based on a Cuban folk tune La canción del árbol ("The song of the tree"). The poinciana tree itself, delonix regia, is a tree introduced to Cuba from Madagascar. Glenn Miller performed it in the late 1930s. Benny Carter and Bing Crosby both issued versions in 1944. It was widely popularized in the 1952 film Dreamboat and subsequently became a standard covered by artists including Johnny Mathis, Vic Damone, Percy Faith, The Four Freshmen and of course Ahmad Jamal (as the first track on an eponymous album), and which featured again in the 1995 film The Bridges of Madison County. In 1978 disco duo Paradise Express recorded a version which made the top 20 on the disco charts. "Poinciana" beca...

The first part of Ahmad Jamal's interview with James Walker of Jazzchicago.net
My guest today is an Afro-American musical wizard. He developed his chops on the bandstand growing up at the tale end of swing and developing his own style within the bebop language. My guest understands the African roots of his music and merged this with the blues of Chicago which were coming up the Mississippi Delta. He found the groove in bars and nightclubs, ballrooms and burlesque houses. Could have been the London House or the Regal Theatre swinging his band and merging two different tunes by raising the hand and showing one finger or two. My guest has an entrepreneurial spirit. He never plays the same song once, preferring the improvisational melodies that make real jazz what it is. He has done this before during and after the record industry helped create an identity for cats like ...

Ahmad Jamal continues his interview with James Walker of JazzChicago.net
Like all jazzmen, Ahmad Jamal is an improviser. But he is always personally opposed to the concept of improvisation as a differentiating jazz from the others musics : "All musicians improvise - Mozart improvised. It is a fundamental error ( that's a misconception ) to believe that improvisation is specific to jazz.
AHMAD JAMAL / Teaser of "Saturday Morning" New album September 2013 released on JazzVillage http://ahmadjamal.com // http://jazzvillagemusic.com Album recorded & produced at La Buissonne Studio. Following on from Blue Moon, Ahmad Jamal and his dream team are back with a joyful album made up of the kind of ballads to which only he holds the key. Each one is a moment of grace, shining like a star in the sky of American Classical Music -- it also features one wonderful Duke Ellington cover and a tribute to Horace Silver. With his light-fingered but rhythmic style, he sends us into a sensuous trance and leads us to a musical climax : a sound, which is pure groove.

#JIM2016

I was a stranger in the city
Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do, what to do, what to do
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
A foggy day, in London town
Had me low, had me down
I viewed the morning, with much alarm
British Museum, had lost its charm
How long I wondered,
Could this thing last
But the age of miracles, hadn't past
For suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London town,
The sun was shining everywhere
For suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London town,
The sun was shining everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere
