Red carpet interviews can tend to not yield a whole lot, even when the interviewer "asks them more."

So it was quite excellent when Shailene Woodley, star of one of TV's biggest TV shows, Big Little Lies (up for 16 awards at the Emmys) told an interviewer that she didn't own a TV.

Emmy Awards 2017 red carpet

Despite some high-school ponytails and more power shoulders than Wall Street in the '80s it was a pretty tame affair.

Proving one of life's truisms: it is pretty much impossible for people to talk about not watching television without sounding unbearably smug.

"All my friends who watch TV, I always ask them when they have time to. When do people have time to? I'm a reader, so I always read a book," Woodley told the interviewer.

Which, well, we all know those people right.

And also, doesn't Woodley know that we are living in the Golden Age of Television (at least that's what the rest of us tell ourselves when we realise that our only hobby is watching TV. But not, like, TV with ad breaks so it doesn't really count #highbrow).

Clearly this was never going to go down well on Twitter - the happy home of TV nerds shouting out witticisms about the TV show they are watching (ironically or non-ironically).

Reactions to Woodley's admission ranked from mild bemusement to full outrage. Excellent gifs were employed all around.

Let's also just say that the irony of Woodley's comments, made on TV's night of nights, was not lost on people.
