Super featherweight (also referred to as junior lightweight) is a weight division in professional boxing, contested between 126 pounds (57 kg) and up to 130 pounds (59 kg).
The super featherweight division was established by the New York Walker Law in 1920, although first founded by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) in 1930. The first English champion was "Battling Kid" Nelson in 1914 who lost his title to Benny Berger in 1915. Artie O’Leary also won this title in 1917. This weight class appeared into two distinct historical periods, from 1921 to 1933 and 1960 to the present.
Notable fighters to hold championship titles at this weight include Flash Elorde, Alexis Argüello, Azumah Nelson, Julio César Chávez, Diego Corrales, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Érik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Acelino Freitas, Juan Manuel Márquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Rocky Lockridge, Manny Pacquiao and Adrien Broner.
Brian Mitchell holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses at this division, with 12 defenses of the WBA title.
Michael Farenas (born June 10, 1984 in Sorsogon, Philippines), is a Filipino professional boxer.
Born in Sorsogon, Farenas currently resides in Foothill Ranch, California. He is a protégé of former world two division champion Gerry Penalosa.
A hard hitting southpaw, Farenas is known for his aggressive style and his powerful punches.
Farenas made his professional debut on September 19, 2004 against Octavio Olinar at the Sports and Cultural Complex in Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. The bout ended in a technical draw after 2 rounds.
On March 15, 2008, Farenas challenged Mexican boxer Baudel Cardenas in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez big fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Paradise, Nevada. The Filipino prospect won the bout by a third round technical knockout. After knocking down Cardenas twice in the 2nd round, Farenas landed a vicious low blow in round 3. The Mexican was given five minutes to recover, but he could not continue, forcing the referee to stop the match.
