Since the mid nineties the architects of MVRDV gained much admiration for their extraordinary architectural designs. Initially in The Netherlands, for instance with an unorthodox office building for a broadcasting company and with the Silodam, a building that stretches out in the waters of the Amsterdam harbour, looking like a giant container ship. The colourful complex showcases MVRDV's approach to density -- a collection of several different neighbourhoods condensed into one single building. International attention came with the Dutch pavilion at the World Exhibition in 2000 in Hannover. MVRDV surprised it's visitors by stacking Dutch landscapes into a square tower formation measuring 40 meters high. At the moment MVRDV is working on numerous projects around the globe. In the latest movie in our Dezeen X MINI Living series, drone footage offers an elevated view of the former 1970s highway that Dutch firm MVRDV transformed into an elevated urban garden. The project, named Seoullo 7017, is a kilometre-long path featuring 24,000 trees, shrubs and flowers set into cylindrical planters. The pedestrian-only route extends across several lanes of traffic to connect Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market with the city's Malli-dong, Jungnim-dong and Cheongpa-dong neighbourhoods. Dutch firm MVRDV was selected to design the walkway as the result of an international competition. Once destined for demolition, the 16-metre-tall highway is now connected to surrounding hotels and shops by a network of bridges and stairs. Read more on Dezeen: https://www.dezeen.com/2017/...

This movie shows the method behind MVRDV's pioneering glass technology that replaces the brick facade of a former townhouse in Amsterdam with a transparent replica, more suited to the building's new use as a Chanel boutique. Described by the Rotterdam studio as the first of its kind, the innovative facade of Crystal Houses Amsterdam uses glass bricks, windows frames and architraves to recreate the city's traditional architectural style. The glass bricks are held in place with a transparent high-strength glue. According to MVRDV, the construction is "in many ways, stronger than concrete", as was proven during the testing process. Towards the upper storeys, the glass elements merge with the original terracotta brickwork to create the illusion of a dissolving wall. The architects believe ...
