Bart the Bear (January 19, 1977 - May 10, 2000) was a male Alaskan Kodiak bear actor best known for his numerous appearances in Hollywood films, including The Bear (for which he reportedly received an Oscar nomination),White Fang, Legends of the Fall, and The Edge. He was trained by animal trainers Doug Seus and Lynne Seus of Wasatch Rocky Mountain Wildlife, Inc., in Heber City, Utah.
Bart was born on January 19, 1977, at the Baltimore Zoo. Bart's mother had previously appeared in films, including Grizzly (1976) and Day of the Animals (1977). When Bart was five weeks old and weighed five pounds, he was adopted by Doug and Lynne Seus, who worked as animal trainers for films. The Seuses trained Bart using a reward and praise system. While still a cub, he appeared in the TV series The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams playing Adams' companion bear, Ben, as a cub.
After reaching adulthood, he subsequently he made his film debut in the film Windwalker (released 1981). He grew to 9' 6" (2.90 m) tall and weighed 1,500 pounds (680 kg) throughout his life as an adult.
Bart the Bear 2, also called Bart the Bear II, Bart 2, Bart II, or Little Bart (born January 20, 2000) is a male interior Alaskan brown bear actor who has appeared in several Hollywood films and television series, including An Unfinished Life, Into the Wild, We Bought a Zoo, and Game of Thrones. His trainers are Doug Seus and Lynne Seus of Wasatch Rocky Mountain Wildlife, Inc., in Heber City, Utah. Bart 2 was named after the earlier Seus-trained bear actor Bart the Bear, although the two bears are not related.
Bart 2 and his sister, Honey Bump, were born in January 2000. Within a few months, they were orphaned when their mother was shot and killed outside Paxson, Alaska. Unable to survive on their own, they were adopted as cubs by Doug and Lynne Seus on April 26, 2000. Bart 2 was named after the Seus' well-known bear actor Bart the Bear, who died in May 2000 shortly after the Seuses adopted the cubs. Doug Seus decided to name the new male cub after the original Bart after seeing that he "had the same nature as the original Bart, and a lot of the attributes." That same year, Bart 2 made his film debut along with Honey Bump in Dr. Dolittle 2, playing the offspring of the bear character "Archie" (who was played by another Seus-trained bear, Tank).
Operating as a non-profit environmental land trust, The Vital Ground Foundation protects and restores North America’s grizzly bear populations by conserving wildlife habitat. Founded in 1990, Vital Ground operates in the belief that the grizzly bear, an umbrella species, is nature’s barometer of a healthy and complete ecosystem, and that conserving grizzly bears and their habitat is key to ensuring diverse and healthy landscapes.
Vital Ground protects critical grizzly bear habitat through cooperative conservation partnerships. The organization focuses on strategically located lands where conservation values transcend property boundaries. Vital Ground partners with willing landowners to protect vital habitat through conservation easements and fee title acquisitions and also participates in select projects on public lands that are designed to reduce conflicts between bears and people, improve habitat quality, protect or enhance resident populations, or increase the land’s carrying capacity for grizzly bears. The organization’s strategy is governed by empirical data on grizzly bear biology and habitat requirements.
Bart may refer to:
As a given name Bart is a diminutive of Bartholomew and may refer to:
The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos ssp.) is any North American morphological form or subspecies of brown bear, including the mainland grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), Kodiak bear (U. a. middendorffi), peninsular grizzly (U. a. gyas), and the recently extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus†) and Mexican grizzly bear (U. a. nelsoni†). Scientists do not use the name grizzly bear but call it the North American brown bear. (See brown bear for a discussion of brown bears outside of North America). It should not be confused with the black grizzly or Ussuri brown bear (U. a. lasiotus) which is another giant brown bear inhabiting Russia, Northern China, and Korea.
Lewis & Clark named it to be grisley or "grizzly", which could have meant "grizzled"; that is, golden and grey tips of the hair or "fear-inspiring". Nonetheless, after careful study, naturalist George Ord formally classified it in 1815 – not for its hair, but for its character – as Ursus horribilis ("terrifying bear").

I was first attracted by your scent
Your heart must be a caramelized onion
By the time I saw your flame
it was all over for you and whashisname.
I think it was Algonquin Park
It was so cold and winter-dark
A promised hibernation high
took me across the great black plate of ice.
Now I'm the Islander.
I found a place to call my den
and dreamt of the Ferry and
the Enormous Man
Huge as were his children
following around after him
I'm the Islander
woke up in the furtive Spring
more capable of anything
I waited for more men to come
hey docked their boats and cocked their guns
The time for truth and reconciliation's gone
But with my belly full I intended to get
something done
I'm the Islander
woke up in the dead of spring
more hungry than anything
Islander
