The Nice were an English progressive rock band active in the late 1960s. They blended rock, jazz and classical music and were keyboardist Keith Emerson's first commercially successful band.
The group was formed in 1967 by Emerson, Lee Jackson, David O'List and Ian Hague to back soul singer P. P. Arnold. After replacing Hague with Brian Davison, the group set out on their own, quickly developing a strong live following. The group's sound was centred on Emerson's Hammond organ showmanship and abuse of the instrument, and their radical rearrangements of classical music themes and Bob Dylan songs.
The band achieved commercial success with an instrumental rearrangement of Leonard Bernstein's "America", following which O'List left the group. The remaining members carried on as a trio, releasing several albums, before Emerson decided to split the band in early 1970 to form Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The group briefly reformed in 2002 for a series of concerts.
Nice (/ˈniːs/, French pronunciation: [nis]; Niçard Occitan: Niça [classical norm] or Nissa [nonstandard], Italian: Nizza or Nizza Marittima, Greek: Νίκαια, Latin: Nicaea) is the fifth most populous city in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse, and it is the capital of the Alpes Maritimes département. The urban area of Nice extends beyond the administrative city limits, with a population of about 1 million on an area of 721 km2 (278 sq mi). Located in the Côte d'Azur area on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region after Marseille. Nice is about 8 miles (13 km) from the principality of Monaco, and its airport is a gateway to the principality as well.
The city is called Nice la Belle (Nissa La Bella in Niçard), which means Nice the Beautiful, which is also the title of the unofficial anthem of Nice, written by Menica Rondelly in 1912.
John Atkinson Grimshaw (6 September 1836 – 13 October 1893) was a Victorian-era artist, a "remarkable and imaginative painter" known for his city night-scenes and landscapes.
His early paintings were signed "JAG," "J. A. Grimshaw," or "John Atkinson Grimshaw," though he finally settled on "Atkinson Grimshaw."
John Atkinson Grimshaw was born 6 September 1836 in Leeds. In 1856 he married his cousin Frances Hubbard (1835–1917). In 1861, at the age of 24, to the dismay of his parents, he left his job as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway to become a painter. He first exhibited in 1862, mostly paintings of birds, fruit and blossom, under the patronage of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. He became successful in the 1870s and rented a second home in Scarborough, which became a favourite subject.
Several of his children, Arthur E. Grimshaw (1864–1913), Louis H. Grimshaw (1870–1944), Wilfred Grimshaw (1871–1937) and Elaine Grimshaw (1877–1970) became painters.
John Atkinson may refer to:
Frank Bridge (26 February 1879 – 10 January 1941) was an English composer, violist and conductor.
Bridge was born in Brighton and studied at the Royal College of Music in London from 1899 to 1903 under Charles Villiers Stanford and others. He played the viola in a number of string quartets, most notably the English String Quartet (along with Marjorie Hayward), and conducted, sometimes deputising for Henry Wood (Payne, Hindmarsh, and Foreman 2001), before devoting himself to composition, receiving the patronage of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge (Banfield 1986, 62–86; Bray 1977, passim).
According to Benjamin Britten Bridge had strong pacifist convictions, and he was deeply disturbed by the First World War, although the extent of his pacifism has been questioned in recent scholarship. During the war and immediately afterwards Bridge wrote a number of pastoral and elegiac pieces that appear to search for spiritual consolation; principal among these are the Lament for strings, Summer for orchestra, A Prayer for chorus and orchestra, and a series of pastoral piano works. The Lament (for Catherine, aged 9 "Lusitania" 1915), for string orchestra, was written as a memorial to the sinking of the RMS Lusitania (Cerabona 2014). The piece was premiered by the New Queen's Hall Orchestra, conducted by the composer, on 15 September, at the 1915 Proms, as part of a programme of "Popular Italian music", the rest of which was conducted by Henry Wood (Anon. 1915; Anon. 2014).

It was a cold blustery day in the depths of our wintery 'Spring' here in Colorado. The crew motivated to venture out to Elkland once again, the psyche was high fresh off of Dave's recent FA of his prow project he had been throwing himself at whenever he got the chance since we discovered this hillside full of boulders. We met Daniel's dad, Steve, in town and rolled up to the prow 5 minutes off the road. Daniel worked the boulder with Dave telling him the nuances of the delicate footwork involved and giving him spots. After an hour or so before Dave got the itch and headed up the hill to try another totally sweet project. Steve and I accompanied Daniel in the 30-degree temps after he figured out the stand-start crux (higher perch foot) and set to work on the bottom. All day Daniel had a lo...

A black and white clip of The Nice, performing Bob Dylan's Country Pie at the Song Days Festival in Essen, Germany, on October11th, 1969. I know this track from their Five Bridges album, but this version seems a little slower and with just a bit more swing. The sound is mixed a little in favour of Emerson, with Lee Jackson's vocals being lowest in the mix (probably few complaints there right?) and the eternally underrated Brian Davidson's drums being pretty audible at all times. Love that overdriven organ tone. I quite liked what The Nice had going on, with Davidson's jazzy drumming having a swing and, dare I say groove, missing from Carl Palmer's technical chatter. Lee Jackson's elastic Vox bass tone was a million miles away from the more conventional Fender bass tones of the day. Emerso...
The Nice performing America. "America" is originaly an arrangement of Leonard Bernstein, and Emerson says it is the first ever instrumental protest song. It also includes pieces of Dvořák's New World Symphony. "America is pregnant with promises and anticipation, but is murdered by the hand of the inevitable."
The Nice (Keith Emerson) - Karelia Suite 1969 using Hammond L100 with Leslie cabinets. The video shows Emerson throwing his L100 about and using the on/off switch to create the great rock effects that he has become known for - Emerson had previously learnt about these 'tricks' some years earlier from the legendary organist Don Shinn who played organ with The Soul Agents. Keith Emerson acknowledges that Don Shinn was a pioneer within the progressive rock movement during the late 60's and that he, Shinn, had a major influence on Emerson's style of playing. Matthew Collings has a wonderfully simple and funny way of making you understand the when, where, why and how of important is art so this programme will get your head around impressionism in a couple of hours. Matthew Collings will reappraise the Impressionists. The four stars are Courbet, Manet, Monet and Cezanne. In two hours their stories and their art will intertwine. Matt will unpack the principles of Impressionism - the strength of color, the flatness, the patterning and the way in which ordinary life is pictured with startling truth - and argue that this is the best thing that has ever happened in modern art. He will also show that although the contemporary art world seemingly despises Impressionism it is only because of Impressionism that the avant-garde came to be.

After the opening of the bridge to the public in 1883, Harper's Monthly reported, "The wise man will not cross the bridge in five minutes, nor in twenty. Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941), Piano Sonata, H.160 (1921 - 1924) Performed by Ashley Wass The characteristics of Bridge’s late style are foreshadowed in the sonata. There is dissonance arising from bi-tonal and intensely chromatic harmony; the phrase structure differs from the smoothness of his earlier music, reflecting the more complex harmony, with balanced musical sentences replaced by phrases of varied lengths; lastly there are rapidly alternating changes of mood and intensity. What is also manifest throughout is a technical mastery in his command of the overall formal structure and in his writing for the instrument. The first movement is cast in sonata form, and like many of Bridge’s works it begins with a slow introduction in which the germs of the entire work are introduced, then ...

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Allegro molto vivace (24:59) The Academy Quintet Description by Zoran Minderovic [-] Often compared to the composer's extraordinary Octet, Op. 20 (1825), the work of a sixteen-year-old genius, Felix Mendelssohn's String Quintet No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 87 (1845) indeed shares many characteristics with the earlier work, though the two are separated by nearly two decades. As in the Octet, the first movement of the Second Quintet opens with a rising triad...

B.’s 10th is one of those sonatas whose lyricism and gentle humor belie its exquisite craftsmanship. The first movement, for instance, has several themes that are certainly distinct (the first is rather Bachian, the second is arch-typical Viennese, the third is duet-like), but they’re definitely not contrasting in the classical sense of the word. And there’s a cunning rhythmic trick played right from the opening bar, where the theme actually enters half a beat earlier than you hear it (you’ll definitely hear the first beat on the LH G; try listening to it “correctly” and the whole movement will transform in your head), which sets up a subtle but definite moment of rhythmic disorientation when the high melody enters in m.4. This part of the speed build (and slow down for interesting details) of The Disney Castle 71040 shows the inside of the rooms of the castle with reference to a heap of Disney Princesses and their stories. Cinderella, Merida (Brave), Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and Snow White get a showing, but some other beloved princesses (such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid) miss out. There is even a room for the fireworks launcher and for all of Mickey's stuff from The Sorcerer's Apprentice animation from the very first Fantasia cartoon. Even though Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Tinkerbell are included as the minifigures in this set, they seem to be here more as hosts than inhabitants of the castle. So I've brought some of the Disney Princess minidolls in to make re...

She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black.
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees.
She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She's nobody's child,
The Law can't touch her at all.
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.

She's a hypnotist collector,
You are a walking antique.

Salute her when her birthday comes.

For Halloween buy her a trumpet
And for Christmas, give her a drum.
