Togo (i/ˈtoʊɡoʊ/), officially the Togolese Republic (French: République Togolaise), is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital Lomé is located. Togo covers 57,000 square kilometres (22,000 sq mi), making it one of the smallest countries in Africa, with a population of approximately 7.5 million.
Togo is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with a climate that provides good growing seasons. The official language is French, with many other languages spoken in Togo, particularly those of the Gbe family. The largest religious group in Togo consists of those with indigenous beliefs, and there are significant Christian and Muslim minorities. Togo is a member of the United Nations, African Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie and Economic Community of West African States.
From the 11th to the 16th century, various tribes entered the region from all directions. From the 16th century to the 18th century, the coastal region was a major trading center for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast". In 1884, Germany declared Togoland a protectorate. After World War I, rule over Togo was transferred to France. Togo gained its independence from France in 1960.

Plot: Shinnojo, a low level samurai, lives with his pretty, dutiful and loyal wife Kayo. He has come to find his position in a castle as a food-taster for a feudal lord to be boring and pointless, and talks about opening a kendo school open to boys of all castes where he can teach the use of the sword. Before he can act on his dream he becomes ill with a fever after tasting some sashimi made from shell fish, but an investigation reveals that the poisoning was not due to a human conspiracy, but a poor choice of food out of season. After three days he awakes but finds that the toxin from the food has blinded him. Kayo is summoned by Shinnojo's family to explain how the couple will survive. His uncle laments that he no longer knows anybody with influence in the castle, and asks Kayo if she knows of anybody. She relates how Toya Shimada, the chief duty officer in the castle and a samurai of high rank, offered to help and they tell her to act upon his offer of assistance. A message from the castle brings the good news that Shinnojo's stipend of rice will remain the same, and for life but his aunt tells him that Kayo was seen with another man. He has Tohuhei, his faithful servant, follow her. Kayo notices that she is being followed, and although Tokuhei offers to cover for her, she reveals to Shinnojo that Shimada offered to help but with a price, shown when he forced himself upon her. He then solicited two additional trysts by threatening to tell Shinnojo about the first. An enraged Shinnojo divorces her and orders her out of his house. When it is revealed to him that Shimada had nothing to do with maintaining his stipend, but that it came out of gratitude from the lord of the clan himself, Shinnojo seeks to renew his skill with the sword as a blind man to avenge the dishonor of Kayo. Through Tokuhei he sends a message to Shimada to set up a duel, with the additional message to not underestimate him. The two samurai meet at the stables near the river to decide their destinies.

Upon his arrival, Jimmy recognizes Spencer, but he insists his name is George Weston. Mary discovers his true identity when she sells him a ranch, but she gives him a pledge of secrecy. Three big-city gangsters, Johnny Sampson, Pretty-Boy Hogan and "Midget", fleeing their latest crime, are hiding out in the closed saloon in "Ghost Town."

Despite Mr Gnassingbé’s best efforts to quash the protests, they continue. Initially centred around Lomé, they have spread to other parts of the country, including Sokodé, Togo’s second city and a traditional stronghold of the Union for the Republic (UNIR), the ruling party. The government cuts the internet to stifle criticism. At least three people have been killed. The police in Lomé threw tear gas into people’s houses, “creating terror”, says one witness. A bill that would limit presidents to two terms was drawn up to appease the opposition. When UNIR said it would rush this through the National Assembly, where it holds 62 of 91 seats, the protests stopped temporarily. But it was soon revealed that the two-term restriction would not apply retroactively, allowing Mr Gnassingbé, who is...

ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS call on the Government to set a date for the organization of the referendum on the draft bill. They encourage the opposition to take this opportunity to further advance the constitutional reforms. ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS appeal to all Togoles...

Gambian minister 'never called for resignation of Togolese President Gambia’s Foreign Ministry has backtracked on its position relative to the political crisis in Togo. The sector minister was on record to have said Togolese president Faure Gnassingbe had to resign immediately. But in a statement on Monday, the Ministry said it was up to the people of Togo to find a solution to what is largely an internal affair. The statement stressed that both countries are still bonded by strong ties. “At this moment, there is no reason warranting the government of the Republic of The Gambia to take a position, since the Togolese people continue to make efforts to find a solution to the crisis,” the statement said. "At this moment, there is no reason warranting the government of the Republic of The ...

Togolese opposition parties will begin the latest round of anti-Gnassingbe protests today. The protests are expected to span a two-day period – October 4 – October 5, 2017. The coalition accuses the government of not responding favourably to their requests after the last series of protests. It was largely observed in the capital, Lome and other parts of the country. The main request of the coalition is for incumbent Faure Gnassingbe to leave power after 12 years in charge. His current mandate secured in 2015 runs till 2020. The opposition is calling for an immediate end to the Gnassingbe dynasty which...

These varieties or spiritual lineages as they are called are practiced throughout areas of Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Togo, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Uruguay, Argentina and Venezuela among others. Boulets de Poulet avec Sauce Rouge - Benin - African Recipes - World Food Challenge I'm trying an african dish this week straight out of Benin as part of the world food challenge. Each week, I'll try a different unique recipe or national dish in my attempt at cooking different food around the world. Boulets de Poulet avec Sauce Rouge is a palm oil or peanut oil chicken dish which translates from french to english as Chicken Meatballs in Red Sauce. It's a bit different than a lot of other recipes because it uses peanut butter as part of the sauce. While it's not the Benin national dish, it contains many staple ingredients typically found in the nation. This is the first african recipe attempted in the World Food Challenge, and it is a unique one. I was really suprised the peanut butter ...
Traveling through was a hassle, but when I got to Kpime atop Mount Agou, the beauty around me more than made up for my terrible experience getting there. Another video, maybe? This video does little justice to Kpime. The beauty on this mountain is unmatched and I really wish I had backed up my phone before it was stolen along with its valuable contents. Ah well, luckily, I captured a small snippet on my other devices and I hope it shows just enough peak into the beauty on Kpime's Mount Agou. Enjoy and let me know what you think about this video. This is a video of "everyday life" in a rural village called Lissezoun in Benin, West Africa. I lived in this village during my time in the US Peace Corps 2004-2007. I went back to visit my Beninese family, friends and community in Dec. 2013 and took these video clips while staying with the Honzonon Family. As you can see, many of the children within their family are responsible for taking care of the "household" tasks around their home. My Beninese work partner and dear friend, Mathieu Honzonon, is the director of our Non-Profit Organization (NGO), "It Must Work!". The children in this video are his own, relatives, and orphans that our NGO has taken in so that they have a supportive and caring home. I hope that this video gives our students, and people around the world, a better un...

Togo latest country to lose web access as regimes increasingly shut down Internet to control protests After 50 years of repressive rule by the same family, the people of Togo rebelled. More than 100,000 protesters filled the streets of the small West African nation this month. The regime responded with a strong-arm tactic that has become increasingly popular among the world's autocracies: It shut down the Internet, making it almost impossible for its opponents to use social media to organize. On Sunday, for a sixth consecutive day, the shutdown was still in effect. The Togolese people had no access to Facebook, WhatsApp or any other Internet services on their mobile phones – the main way in which Africans gain access to the Internet – although there were reports late on Sunday night...

For the fourth time in his career, Togo's Francis Kone has helped save someone's life on the football pitch. 26-year-old Kone plies his trade in the Czech first league with Slovacko. Over the weekend, his team took on the Bohemians. In the 29th minute, Bohemians goalkeeper Martin Borkovec collided with a teammate and lay motionless on the ground. Kone reacted quickly and was able to stop the goalkeeper from swallowing his tongue, allowing him to breathe freely. The league called Kone the "hero" of the match.

Everything I do Is all done for you
Lady I'm yours
And everywhere I go
You're always on my mind
You're all I adore
And I'll go
Outta my way
Just to assure
That our love endures I'm yours
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)
To keep you nice and warm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)
To protect you from the storm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'll be there I'll be right there
I don't need you say
That I love you
A million times a day
Just the little things I do
All done for you
That's how I display
Love
And I'll go
Out of my way
Just to assure you baby
That our love endures I'm yours
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (right there)
To keep you nice and warm
(Girl I'll keep you nice and warm,
You know I'll keep you nice and warm
You know I'll keep you nice and warm)
Girl I'm never far away I'll be right there (I'll be right there)
To protect you from the storm I'm rushing right home
Girl I'll be there I'll be right there
You don't have to go and check my pager
Check my phone and search my pants to figure me out (ha)
Cause I'm an honest man
Don't need a plan, a stronger man
Cause girl there is no doubt
My love's real (as real as it comes)
Even though we are a million miles away from each other
I'm still right here, right here for you
(Here for you, here for you) I could search a million years
And still I wouldn't find anyone as beautiful as you
So rest assured our love endures I'm never far away...
