The greatest silent star of all time Mary Pickford in her final film "Secrets" from 1933. She only made 4 talkies, and this was one of them!
Mary was known for playing little girl roles, her final such one coming well in her 30s. She was 41 when she made this film and was playing a 16-19 year old. In addition to growing personal problems this was the main reason she quit films, not because her voice was unsuitable as rumored (her first talkie Coquette won an Oscar).

Head of maize or "Indian Corn". Voice over describes how to cook maize. Describes how the cob is really a group of 400 - 600 fertilised seeds of the maize. C/U of the cob. Through time lapse we see one of the corn seeds putting out roots and growing. We see the shoots pushing through the earth. Leaves break through spear like cover and start to grow. The root pushes deeper down into the soil. Two roots struggle for supremacy. Leaves unfurl. New roots grow like an umbrella in shape to hold the plant into the ground and prevent it being blown over by strong winds. Aerial roots appear. Full grown maize blows in the wind. Maize flowers. Male and female flowers. The male flower puts out "anthers" which open and drop out pollen. Magnified anther is shown opening - pollen grains drop out. Highly magnified pollen grains. Anther closes during wet weather as water spoils pollen.
The plant is prodded and flicked with a hand to show how clouds of pollen are released. The pollen is carried to the female flower. We see the female flower growing. Long threads of "silk" are covered with sticky hairs which catch grains of pollen. C/U of pollen putting out a tube. Graphic illustration of the pollen tube - animation. Animation of fertilisation of seeds. The silk gradually dies away and seeds remain on the cob.

History: In 1925 the Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn offered Freud $100,000 if he would collaborate on a love film about Anthony and Cleopatra, but in vain. In the same year the film producer Hans Neumann requested the Berlin psychoanalysts Hanns Sachs and Karl Abraham to act as advisers in the making of a "psychoanalytic" film. So popular did psychoanalysis appear to be at this time that even the German film industry viewed it as topic likely to attract the general public. In spite of Freud's strong objections, Abraham and Sachs accepted the offer and reworks the scenario of the film Secrets of a Soul: A Psychoanalytical Drama (Director: G.W. Pabst, Scenario: Colin Ross). The UFA film reconstructed a case of mental disturbance and its cure by psychoanalysis which Freud had reported. Sachs put together a brochure to accompany the film, under the title "Psychoanalysis. Riddle of the Unconscious", which was intended to explain to the public the basic outline of psychoanalytical therapy.
Meanwhile in Vienna A. J. Storfer and Siegfried Bernfeld were developing the project of producing a counterpart to Secrets of a Soul for the International Psychoanalytical Press. The attempt of both analysts to enter the film business turned out to be unsuccessful. Their film project failed owing to insufficient support from other psychoanalysts and not least because of lack of capital to finance it. When Freud heard of the film plans of his own press he stressed to Ferenczi his opposition to anything that might connect his name with a film: "Stupid things happen in film affairs. The company that has beguiled Sachs and Abraham could, of course, not restrain itself from proclaiming my "consent" to the world. I remonstrated strongly to Sachs, today the Neue Freie Presse published a denial. Meanwhile it turns out that Bernfeld and Storfer are involvedin a similar undertaking. I won't hold them back since filming seems to be as unavoidable, it seems, as page-boy haircuts, but I won't have myself trimmed that way and do not wish to be brought into personal contact with any film." [Freud to Ferenczi, 14.8.1925] To lend his name to a love film, as Goldwyn had suggested, seemed to Freud less of an error than the attempt to film psychoanalysis itself. His main objection against its visual representation remained that "I do not consider it possible to represent our abstractions graphically in any respectable manner." (Freud an Abraham, 9.6.1925)

There was a short period in which the UK effectively banned most US films from being showed there. The Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 gave preference to films made within the British Empire. Films made in Canada could qualify to be British To fulfill the quota a bunch of B movies were filmed in Victoria.
The Willows Park Studio in Victoria was run by Kenneth J. Bishop. The studio produced 14 quota pictures for the U.K. market between 1933–1937.

There was a short period in which the UK effectively banned most US films from being showed there. The Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 gave preference to films made within the British Empire. Films made in Canada could qualify to be British To fulfill the quota a bunch of B movies were filmed in Victoria. The Willows Park Studio in Victoria was run by Kenneth J. Bishop. The studio produced 14 quota pictures for the U.K. market between 1933–1937. Head of maize or "Indian Corn". Voice over describes how to cook maize. Describes how the cob is really a group of 400 - 600 fertilised seeds of the maize. C/U of the cob. Through time lapse we see one of the corn seeds putting out roots and growing. We see the shoots pushing through the earth. Leaves break through spear like cover and start to grow. The root pushes deeper down into the soil. Two roots struggle for supremacy. Leaves unfurl. New roots grow like an umbrella in shape to hold the plant into the ground and prevent it being blown over by strong winds. Aerial roots appear. Full grown maize blows in the wind. Maize flowers. Male and female flowers. The male flower puts out "anthers" which open and drop out pollen. Magnified anther is shown opening - pollen grains drop out. Highly magnified pollen grains. Anther closes during wet weather as water spoils pollen.
The plant is prodded and flicked with a hand to show how clouds of pollen are released. The pollen is carried to the female flower. We see the female flower growing. Long threads of "silk" are covered with sticky hairs which catch grains of pollen. C/U of pollen putting out a tube. Graphic illustration of the pollen tube - animation. Animation of fertilisation of seeds. The silk gradually dies away and seeds remain on the cob.

History: In 1925 the Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn offered Freud $100,000 if he would collaborate on a love film about Anthony and Cleopatra, but in vain. In the same year the film producer Hans Neumann requested the Berlin psychoanalysts Hanns Sachs and Karl Abraham to act as advisers in the making of a "psychoanalytic" film. So popular did psychoanalysis appear to be at this time that even the German film industry viewed it as topic likely to attract the general public. In spite of Freud's strong objections, Abraham and Sachs accepted the offer and reworks the scenario of the film Secrets of a Soul: A Psychoanalytical Drama (Director: G.W. Pabst, Scenario: Colin Ross). The UFA film reconstructed a case of mental disturbance and its cure by psychoanalysis which Freud had reported. Sachs put together a brochure to accompany the film, under the title "Psychoanalysis. Riddle of the Unconscious", which was intended to explain to the public the basic outline of psychoanalytical therapy.
Meanwhile in Vienna A. J. Storfer and Siegfried Bernfeld were developing the project of producing a counterpart to Secrets of a Soul for the International Psychoanalytical Press. The attempt of both analysts to enter the film business turned out to be unsuccessful. Their film project failed owing to insufficient support from other psychoanalysts and not least because of lack of capital to finance it. When Freud heard of the film plans of his own press he stressed to Ferenczi his opposition to anything that might connect his name with a film: "Stupid things happen in film affairs. The company that has beguiled Sachs and Abraham could, of course, not restrain itself from proclaiming my "consent" to the world. I remonstrated strongly to Sachs, today the Neue Freie Presse published a denial. Meanwhile it turns out that Bernfeld and Storfer are involvedin a similar undertaking. I won't hold them back since filming seems to be as unavoidable, it seems, as page-boy haircuts, but I won't have myself trimmed that way and do not wish to be brought into personal contact with any film." [Freud to Ferenczi, 14.8.1925] To lend his name to a love film, as Goldwyn had suggested, seemed to Freud less of an error than the attempt to film psychoanalysis itself. His main objection against its visual representation remained that "I do not consider it possible to represent our abstractions graphically in any respectable manner." (Freud an Abraham, 9.6.1925)

Reuters is reporting a marked discrepancy in figures relating to Russian servicemen killed fighting in Syria thus far this year between the country’s Defense Ministry and accounts from families and friends.According to Defense Ministry figures, 10 servicemen have been killed in the fighting ... The seven-month tally exceeds the 36 Russian armed personnel and contractors Reuters estimates to have been killed in Syria, the report said....
