UNDP donated ¢20,000 and eight pieces of Gari ElephantsTM to the Kenyase No. 3 Cassava Processing Association in the Brong Ahafo Region. The gesture was to enhance the productive capacity of women in the community for sustainable livelihoods and to promote cookstoves that are energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The Minamata Convention was agreed by more than 120 countries in October 2013, to increase global efforts to significantly reduce and eliminate mercury releases in the atmosphere, land and water bodies. This convention after being ratified in more than 50 countries comes into force today.

Today, Madam Ama Osaa, a single parent and mother of 4, wears broad smiles on her face as she looks intently into the future with hope for her palm kernel oil business. “For me, it has been a lifeline. It has really wiped away my tears and put smiles on my face”, says Ama.

Fonio (known locally as ‘egg of the world’) thrives in arid lands making it suitable for cultivation even on degraded fields. UNDP working with GEF Small Grant Programme procured and installed equipment for processing and packaging ‘fonio’. The intervention now makes it possible for the group to process up to 1,500 kilograms of the crop each week.
