Fuel is the ultimate grudge purchase. You only buy it because, if you don’t, your car is furniture. Everyone hates buying fuel. And most fuel buyers really don’t understand what’s going on ‘down there’ in your engine. They’re easy marks for fuel-saving con artists.

Miracle fuel savers. Before you click ‘buy now’ with your credit card handy, there’s just one small problem: Fuel savers don’t work. And they don’t work because actual science says they can’t actually work. Let’s count ‘em down:
Here’s how to tell if an fuel saving device is bullshit. The acid test: If you read any claim like this example from those arseholes at Fitch Fuel Catalyst:
“...the Fitch Fuel Catalyst causes more complete combustion…”
Any device that claims its benefit is derived from more complete combustion … is basically a bullshit sandwich with no bread.
Combustion is essentially already complete in a modern engine. Any car that conforms to the Euro 5 emissions standard is required to emit less than one tenth of one gram of unburned hydrocarbons per kilometre.
Think about that claim: if combustion were incomplete, unburned hydrocarbons would be coming out of the tailpipe. The maximum amount of unburned hydrocarbons allowed by regulation is about one one-thousandth of the amount of fuel going in. Seventeen years ago, when Euro 3 came in, it was double that.
So most engines out there on the road today are emitting between one and two tenths of one per cent of the fuel they consume as unburned hydrocarbons. And that means every bullshit fuel saver that claims to work by making combustion (quote-unquote) ‘more complete’ can achieve a maximum of only one to two tenths of a per cent increase in fuel efficiency.
That’s if they actually worked - which they don’t.

FuelShark, also called car fuel saver or economizer, is a miraculous device that claims to save 20% or more of fuel. Just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket of your car and you magically save 20% of gas. It also saves oil, battery life and environment and even increases the power of your engine! This is what the sellers claim. In reality, this is just a tiny 1000uF capacitor (rated 25V) connected in parallel with car mains. Fortunately there’s also a 2A fuse. There's also an indicator LED with two 1k resistors in series (they could have used one) and a 1.5M discharging resistor. I have no idea how this is supposed to save 20% of your fuel and why the car manufacturers don't put this already into all cars :). But at least, this is a nice flashlight and it tells all passengers that you are an expert :).

The hoses are connected before and after the carburettor. the bike is an Honda Shine 125cc single cylinder engine. On road it gives an average mileage of 45-50 kmpl before fitting this fuel saver and gives 54-65 kmpl after fitting this.

A fuel is any material that can be made to react so that it releases chemical or nuclear energy as heat or to be used for work. Fifth Gear
Fifth Gear is a British motoring television magazine series. Originally shown on Channel 5 from 2002 to 2011. Since 2012 the show has only been available on limited distribution platforms such as Discovery from 2012 to 2014 and History since 2015 alongside ITV4 meaning the show is returning to freeview for the first time in four years after it ended on Channel 5 in 2011. The show is currently presented by Tiff Needell, Vicki Butler-Henderson and Jonny Smith. Fifth Gear's rival shows are BBC Two's Top Gear and Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May's 2016 Untitled Amazon motoring show for Amazon Video.
Fifth Gear was first broadcast on 8 April 2002 as 5th Gear, and as a continuation of the original incarnation of the BBC show Top Gear, which was cancelled in 2001. Top Gear was relaunched later that year; Channel 5 originally wanted to carry on using the Top Gear name, but the BBC refused. Several of Top Gear's ex-presenters, including Quentin Willson, Tiff Needell, and Vicki Butler-Henderson, were hired by Channel 5 to present the series. The show's name was restyled as Fifth Gear in 2005.

But a Filipino inventor may have come up with a solution, developing a device that is both environmentally friendly and cost effective. SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER: Pablo Planas was working as a Jeepney operator, around thirty years ago, when he came up with the idea for the Khaos Super Turbo Charger. Named after the Greek Goddess of Air, the KSTC works by maintaining the optimum air-gas ratio in the combustion engine. A vehicle's carburettor mixes this amount of gas and air when the throttle is fully open. But when the engine is idle, there is not really enough air pumping into the engine as the throttle is nearly closed and the flow is restricted. Planas says this means some fuel is wasted and pollutants are released into the atmosphere. But he claims his devices rectifies this. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) "This device works by.....when you release gas (into the engine) and the throttle closes, the engine cannot take air into the carburettor, or the part of the engine that should be supplying air. This device pumps the right amount of air into the engine. So even while it's idle, the mixture (of gasoline and air) is correct. Step on the gas and the mixture is also correct. If the mixture is always correct, there will be no unburnt fuel, no pollution. That's called complete combustion." SUPER CAPTION: Pablo Planas, Inventor At the Manila marketing office for Khaos - mechanics are busy installing the devices. Motorists who have been using the KTSC say it's excellent value for money. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) "You will be able to save on gas. You no longer need to make daily trips to the gas station." I'm not sure about this thing at all. The idea is that you plug it into your cars OBD2 diagnostics connector and it analyses your driving and engine performance, and then remaps your engines control parameters to make it more efficient. The OBD port is fitted near the drivers position in all modern cars. It's an industry-standard communication port that allows mechanics and technically minded owners to access their vehicles diagnostic log and check the output of various sensors. Up to this point I was under the impression that it does not allow you to modify engine settings other than to reset warnings. The only possibility of this is where a manufacturer might use the OBD port to upload software into the cars computer, and it does appear that some models do allow that. However, from what I've found online, the OBD port is not really suited to re-mapping engine characteristics. Then comes the awkward situation of whether you should plug ANY device that claims to alter engine settings into your car. There are so many different makes and models of car that the software would have to identify the make and model, type of engine and the parameters it could safely change. You would then be relying on a bit of software of unknown origin that was basically messing around with settings in a vehicle that could damage it, cause it to malfunction suddenly while being driven, or even just brick the cars control computer completely. All these scenarios could result in thousands of pounds worth of damage. So it's a surprise that the unit does have more than just some blinking LEDs, but also has all three main communication networks brought up to the PCB that has a processor and crystal on it. It does allude to the possibility that it is communicating with the cars computer. Whether that's to actually do functional things or just put on a show by activating various lights on the dashboard for show is hard to determine. I'm not sure what to make of this. I certainly would NOT plug this into my own car in case it did cause irreversible misconfiguration of random settings. There's even a possibility that a very naughty bit of software could program in an extra key code to the security system as is possible on some BMW models. That could give thieves access to your vehicle with a "universal" key. During my research on the availability of OBD based tuning software the sites I found were very much the hard-sell quack sites that keep pounding their message for a long time before finally getting round to indicating the price (usually at an amazing discount) and then try to stop you navigating away from their site by using suspicious pop-ups to block your exit and imply that a sales advisor is wanting to talk to you. Just the wrong type of site completely. The only way to test this unit properly would be to use it with an engine simulator, and as that is very specialised I'm just going to have to go with a gut instinct on this one and say I wouldn't actually trust it. -

I'm not sure about this thing at all. The idea is that you plug it into your cars OBD2 diagnostics connector and it analyses your driving and engine performance, and then remaps your engines control parameters to make it more efficient. The OBD port is fitted near the drivers position in all modern cars. Here’s how to tell if an fuel saving device is bullshit. The acid test: If you read any claim like this example from those arseholes at Fitch Fuel Catalyst:
“...the Fitch Fuel Catalyst causes more complete combustion…”
Any device that claims its benefit is derived from more complete combustion … is basically a bullshit sandwich with no bread.
Combustion is essentially already complete in a modern engine. Any car that conforms to the Euro 5 emissions standard is required to emit less than one tenth of one gram of unburned hydrocarbons per kilometre.
Think about that claim: if combustion were incomplete, unburned hydrocarbons would be coming out of the tailpipe. The maximum amount of unburned hydrocarbons allowed by regulation is about one one-thousandth of the amount of fuel going in. Seventeen years ago, when Euro 3 came in, it was double that.
So most engines out there on the road today are emitting between one and two tenths of one per cent of the fuel they consume as unburned hydrocarbons. And that means every bullshit fuel saver that claims to work by making combustion (quote-unquote) ‘more complete’ can achieve a maximum of only one to two tenths of a per cent increase in fuel efficiency.
That’s if they actually worked - which they don’t.

Pablo Planas was working as a Jeepney operator, around thirty years ago, when he came up with the idea for the Khaos Super Turbo Charger.
Named after the Greek Goddess of Air, the KSTC works by maintaining the optimum air-gas ratio in the combustion engine.
A vehicle's carburettor mixes this amount of gas and air when the throttle is fully open.
But when the engine is idle, there is not really enough air pumping into the engine as the throttle is nearly closed and the flow is restricted.
Planas says this means some fuel is wasted and pollutants are released into the atmosphere.
But he claims his devices rectifies this.

"This device works by.....when you release gas (into the engine) and the throttle closes, the engine cannot take air into the carburettor, or the part of the engine that should be supplying air. This device pumps the right amount of air into the engine. So even while it's idle, the mixture (of gasoline and air) is correct. Step on the gas and the mixture is also correct. If the mixture is always correct, there will be no unburnt fuel, no pollution. That's called complete combustion."

I'm not sure about this thing at all. The idea is that you plug it into your cars OBD2 diagnostics connector and it analyses your driving and engine performance, and then remaps your engines control parameters to make it more efficient.
The OBD port is fitted near the drivers position in all modern cars. It's an industry-standard communication port that allows mechanics and technically minded owners to access their vehicles diagnostic log and check the output of various sensors. Up to this point I was under the impression that it does not allow you to modify engine settings other than to reset warnings. The only possibility of this is where a manufacturer might use the OBD port to upload software into the cars computer, and it does appear that some models do allow that.
However, from what I've found online, the OBD port is not really suited to re-mapping engine characteristics.
Then comes the awkward situation of whether you should plug ANY device that claims to alter engine settings into your car. There are so many different makes and models of car that the software would have to identify the make and model, type of engine and the parameters it could safely change. You would then be relying on a bit of software of unknown origin that was basically messing around with settings in a vehicle that could damage it, cause it to malfunction suddenly while being driven, or even just brick the cars control computer completely. All these scenarios could result in thousands of pounds worth of damage.
So it's a surprise that the unit does have more than just some blinking LEDs, but also has all three main communication networks brought up to the PCB that has a processor and crystal on it. It does allude to the possibility that it is communicating with the cars computer. Whether that's to actually do functional things or just put on a show by activating various lights on the dashboard for show is hard to determine.
I'm not sure what to make of this. I certainly would NOT plug this into my own car in case it did cause irreversible misconfiguration of random settings. There's even a possibility that a very naughty bit of software could program in an extra key code to the security system as is possible on some BMW models. That could give thieves access to your vehicle with a "universal" key.
During my research on the availability of OBD based tuning software the sites I found were very much the hard-sell quack sites that keep pounding their message for a long time before finally getting round to indicating the price (usually at an amazing discount) and then try to stop you navigating away from their site by using suspicious pop-ups to block your exit and imply that a sales advisor is wanting to talk to you. Just the wrong type of site completely.
The only way to test this unit properly would be to use it with an engine simulator, and as that is very specialised I'm just going to have to go with a gut instinct on this one and say I wouldn't actually trust it.

You would then be relying on a bit of software of unknown origin that was basically messing around with settings in a vehicle that could damage it, cause it to malfunction suddenly while being driven, or even just brick the cars control computer completely. All these scenarios could result in thousands of pounds worth of damage.
So it's a surprise that the unit does have more than just some blinking LEDs, but also has all three main communication networks brought up to the PCB that has a processor and crystal on it. It does allude to the possibility that it is communicating with the cars computer. Whether that's to actually do functional things or just put on a show by activating various lights on the dashboard for show is hard to determine.
I'm not sure what to make of this. I certainly would NOT plug this into my own car in case it did cause irreversible misconfiguration of random settings. There's even a possibility that a very naughty bit of software could program in an extra key code to the security system as is possible on some BMW models. That could give thieves access to your vehicle with a "universal" key.
During my research on the availability of OBD based tuning software the sites I found were very much the hard-sell quack sites that keep pounding their message for a long time before finally getting round to indicating the price (usually at an amazing discount) and then try to stop you navigating away from their site by using suspicious pop-ups to block your exit and imply that a sales advisor is wanting to talk to you. Just the wrong type of site completely.
The only way to test this unit properly would be to use it with an engine simulator, and as that is very specialised I'm just going to have to go with a gut instinct on this one and say I wouldn't actually trust it.

Shorting out a fully charged cheap lithium jump starter. (It didn't end well.)
I was given this defective lithium jump starter by a local chap called Andy for analysis. Then I decided to REALLY test it. I also had an incident at my bench while the camera was off where the negative plates of an opened cell spontaneously erupted in flames and smoke. Having shown one of the cheaper, but less safety conscious electrically heated showers used in some other parts of the world I thought it would be fair to show the insides of a typical British electrically heated shower. An interesting new direction for the LED filament lamps. At first I thought these were just using a longer version of the metal filament base, but it's a completely new style of LED filament. Here’s what you need to know:
Diesel powertrains cost more up front - around $2500 more for, just for the engine, in mainstream vehicles. And it delivers better fuel economy. If we do a typical apples-for-apples comparison here, you can buy a Hyundai Tucson Active in petrol or diesel. They’re both 2.0-litre engines. The petrol drinks 23 per cent more fuel during the combined cycle lab test. That’s pretty typical.
The extra cost of the diesel is absolutely justified - the diesel engine is turbocharged, it has an extremely high-pressure fuel rail and a bunch of other hi-tech hardware - compared with the parts list for the typical alternative lo-tech petrol alternative - which is an atmo, multi-point injected dunger designed about 12 years ago. There are many exceptions. Like the Mazda CX-9 2.5 turbocharged direct injection engine - that’s an outstanding hi-tech petrol engine.
The diesel engine makes more torque - and therefore requires a beefier driveline in order to cope. Sometimes the petrol comes in 2WD, while the diesel is exclusively AWD - which also ramps up the cost.
Diesel is more fuel efficient - generally - for a few reasons. Mainly because the combustion process is more efficient. Reason being: diesel tolerates greater compression inside the engine. That allows it to expand over a greater range, and that gives you more efficiency. And, although the energy density of the fuels - per kilo - is about the same, diesel is a little denser than gasoline, so there’s a bit more energy in every litre of diesel.
The upshot is that if you can drive around 800 kilometres on a tank of petrol you’ll achieve more like 1000 kilometres on a tank of diesel - ballpark estimate. And that means, A) incremental savings over time, B) fewer overall refuelling stops, and C) you’ll enjoy more cruising range if you visit remote areas.
In those situations, when it’s a long way between refuelling stations, diesel can be a real plus.

I'm not sure if the design actually controlled the output voltage accurately or if it was just a soft cut-in and out to avoid sudden intensity changes of lighting. The unit is actually only rated for 8A with a peak of 20A and will bypass the transformer if the load gets too high or if the transformer gets hot.

This is a perplexingly complicated device that was/is heavily marketed by salesmen as an energy saving unit that will lower your electricity bill.
The design starts out in a very traditional manner by using a device called a buck transformer. This is a transformer with a mains voltage primary and a low voltage secondary that then gets put in series with the load and drops the voltage to it (or boosts it up if wired in reverse). Then it gets quite complicated with a bank of IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) which combine the ease of driving of a MOSFET with the ruggedness of a traditional bipolar transistor. Not rugged enough though apparently as they had all failed as a dead short between their emitters and collectors with leakage to the gate too.
I'm not sure if the design actually controlled the output voltage accurately or if it was just a soft cut-in and out to avoid sudden intensity changes of lighting. The unit is actually only rated for 8A with a peak of 20A and will bypass the transformer if the load gets too high or if the transformer gets hot.

I also had an incident at my bench while the camera was off where the negative plates of an opened cell spontaneously erupted in flames and smoke. They may have been made more reactive by the high electron charge they had, or it was just a reaction with the air. There's very little actual lithium in these cells, just a coating of lithium metal oxide.

Having shown one of the cheaper, but less safety conscious electrically heated showers used in some other parts of the world I thought it would be fair to show the insides of a typical British electrically heated shower.
It's understandable that people might be concerned about having electrical equipment in a shower cubicle with them, particularly at 240V, but when done properly (like this unit) then the risk is very low, especially when backed up with an RCD or GFI for protection against earth/ground leakage current.
Unfortunately, many of these units are now installed by crash-trained "electrical experts" courtesy of the retarded Part P instant electrical certification scam. But let's not go there. (Financially motivated deskilling.)
This unit had lots of technical surprises. Mainly because the design has been optimised for manufacturing time and costs. But it looks good quality with a sensible modular design to allow easy servicing.
These shower units are popular in the UK because they offer near instant hot water on demand without relying on a remote hot water tank or a continuous circulation pump. The high power rating is really more suited to a higher supply voltage like 220V to 240V, so I'm not sure if they do 120V versions of these.
This video was recorded with a different device to test its audio and video functionality. I may have set the exposure a bit high.

1. Post-purchase research syndrome. My inbox cries me a river on this. People do it all the time, and it’s just nuts. Good safety tip: Buying a car always works better when research pre-dates purchase.
2. Fixing non-problems. If your car does not have a problem, don’t go looking for one, and definitely don’t fix it. Try manifesting a state of happiness. Contentment. Don’t stress - I’m sure something else will go wrong soon.
3. The blame game. If you damage the car, you know, if you leave it parked in the ocean, just for one night, it’s really not the carmaker’s problem. They’ll fix it for you, in exchange for money, if possible. Or you could talk to your insurance company, depending on the circumstances. That seems fair.
4. Service. The fact that service intervals are commonly 12 months and 15,000 kilometres is exceptional. A testament to brilliant engineering - in particular chemical engineering of synthetic oil. Some people, however, still want to stretch the boundaries. You need to realise that servicing is a contract between you and the carmaker. If you breach that contract by not getting the car serviced according to the schedule, you void the warranty.
5. Entropy. Entropy works on your car continuously, undoing its precision over time and distance. Making it more random. So, don’t complain when you get 160,000 kilometres down the track and the transmission makes a mess in its trousers. It’s a miracle that it managed four laps of the earth, reliably.
6. Modifications. Modifications will void your warranty. This means - buy a vehicle that does what you want, standard. In the case of something like the Ranger, is there some job that you need it to do, where the standard 470 Newton-metres is really not likely to be sufficient? Does it really need that performance chip?
7. Wars of attrition. I get people all the time - they’ve been at war with Ford or Jeep or Volkswagen or Holden (ie - the biggest dog brands) for five, maybe six years. But there gets to a point where the tough love ownership conclusion is: Get rid of it; it’s a shitbox, don’t buy another Ford, ever, and buy something decent, that won’t be a disproportionate source of angst in your life.
8. Metadata Monkies. People always say to me: ‘I’ve had a Captiva for five years. Best car I’ve ever owned.’ Like that. To these passionate correspondents, I would say: Nice metadata analysis. Buying a car is - in part - about the management of risk. And one of the key risks - the hardest one to get good advice on, incidentally, is to avoid owning a car that is an unreliable shitheap, from a carmaker that will leave you out in the cold if you have a problem.
9. Cheapskates. Look - if you have a problem: a) take it to the dealer, and if you get brushed, b) take it to the carmaker, and if you get brushed, c) next stop - get advice from your own solicitor. Pay for it.
Don’t be a cheapskate here because you can bet the dealer and the carmaker know how to play this game. Level the damn playing field.
10. Infosluts. My strong advice to you is: Don’t be an infoslut. Finding reviews is clearly not a problem. Finding good ones is. Note that most of these seem to be aimed at the higher voltage European mains supply of 220V to 240V, although the design of the filament means they can easily manufacture a version with the LEDs in a different series/parallel configuration for lower voltages.
