What PageRank is all about
Way back in 1998, the two guys who created Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, came up with a new way to analyze websites based on their linking relationships with other websites.
They called this new system they came up with "Backrub" at first. Later they decided to call it "PageRank," based oddly enough on Larry Page's last name, and not on the fact that the algorithm was created to rank webpages.
What is Google PageRank based on?
The general idea of PageRank is like this: if my website links to your website, that's like my website vouching for your website. It's like a vote for your site, we're saying that your site is legit and people should take it seriously.
It's essentially just like a high school popularity contest: the more people you have linking to your website, the better Google thinks your website is.
Power to the people! It's like asking the people what THEY think about your website, instead of asking you what YOU think about the website that you created, which is pretty much what search engines did before Google came up with the PageRank algorithm.
What is Google's PageRank algorithm?

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))
PR(A) = PageRank of page A
PR(Ti) = PageRank of pages Ti, which link to page A
C(Ti) = total number of outbound links on page Ti
d represents a "damping factor" which is a number between 0 and 1
PR(Tn) = PageRank of page Tn
C(Tn) = total number of outbound links on page Tn
Let's unpack that a little, shall we?
One of the first things we can infer from this algorithm is that Google's PageRank system does not rank websites as a whole, but instead gives a rank for each individual page on a website.
The PageRank of page A is determined by the PageRanks of the pages that are linking to page A.
The PageRank of pages Ti (which do link to page A) does not factor in to the PageRank of page A. This is because the PageRank of page T is based on the total number of outbound links C(T) that are on page T. So the more outbound links on page T, the less benefit or "link juice" page A will receive from being linked to from page T.
Now we must add up the weighted PageRank of pages Ti. Additional inbound links for page A will always increase page A's PageRank.
The last thing in the process is to multiply the total sum of weighted PageRanks of all pages Ti, with an additional dampening factor d, which is a number between 0 and 1. So the extended PageRank benefit that a page has when another page links to it is reduced.

PageRank
PageRank is an algorithm used by Google Search to rank websites in their search engine results. PageRank was named after Larry Page, one of the founders of Google. PageRank is a way of measuring the importance of website pages. According to Google:
It is not the only algorithm used by Google to order search engine results, but it is the first algorithm that was used by the company, and it is the best-known.
Description
PageRank is a link analysis algorithm and it assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is referred to as the PageRank of E and denoted by 
Other factors like Author Rank can contribute to the importance of an entity.
A PageRank results from a mathematical algorithm based on the webgraph, created by all World Wide Web pages as nodes and hyperlinks as edges, taking into consideration authority hubs such as cnn.com or usa.gov. The rank value indicates an importance of a particular page. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself.

What PageRank is all about
Way back in 1998, the two guys who created Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, came up with a new way to analyze websites based on their linking relationships with other websites.
They called this new system they came up with "Backrub" at first. Later they decided to call it "PageRank," based oddly enough on Larry Page's last name, and not on the fact that the algorithm was created to rank webpages.
What is Google PageRank based on?
The general idea of PageRank is like this: if my website links to your website, that's like my website vouching for your website. It's like a vote for your site, we're saying that your site is legit and people should take it seriously.
It's essentially just like a high school popularity contest: the more people you have linking to your website, the better Google thinks your website is.
Power to the people! It's like asking the people what THEY think about your website, instead of asking you what YOU think about the website that you created, which is pretty much what search engines did before Google came up with the PageRank algorithm.
What is Google's PageRank algorithm?
You asked for it. Here goes, courtesy of these guys.
PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))
PR(A) = PageRank of page A
PR(Ti) = PageRank of pages Ti, which link to page A
C(Ti) = total number of outbound links on page Ti
d represents a "damping factor" which is a number between 0 and 1
PR(Tn) = PageRank of page Tn
C(Tn) = total number of outbound links on page Tn
Let's unpack that a little, shall we?
One of the first things we can infer from this algorithm is that Google's PageRank system does not rank websites as a whole, but instead gives a rank for each individual page on a website.
The PageRank of page A is determined by the PageRanks of the pages that are linking to page A.
The PageRank of pages Ti (which do link to page A) does not factor in to the PageRank of page A. This is because the PageRank of page T is based on the total number of outbound links C(T) that are on page T. So the more outbound links on page T, the less benefit or "link juice" page A will receive from being linked to from page T.
Now we must add up the weighted PageRank of pages Ti. Additional inbound links for page A will always increase page A's PageRank.
The last thing in the process is to multiply the total sum of weighted PageRanks of all pages Ti, with an additional dampening factor d, which is a number between 0 and 1. So the extended PageRank benefit that a page has when another page links to it is reduced.
