Sicily (/ˈsɪsᵻli/ SISS-i-lee; Italian: Sicilia [siˈtʃiːlja]; Sicilian: Sicilia) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea; along with surrounding minor islands, it constitutes an autonomous region of Italy officially referred to as Regione Siciliana.
Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. It extends from the tip of the Apennine peninsula, from which it is separated only by the narrow Strait of Messina, towards the North African coast. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, which, at 3,350 m (10,990 ft), is the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate.
The earliest archeological evidence of human dwelling on the island dates from as early as 12,000 BC. At around 750 BC, Sicily had three Phoenician and a dozen Greek colonies, and for the next 600 years, it was the site of the Greek–Punic and Roman–Punic wars, which ended with the Roman destruction of Carthage. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Sicily frequently changed hands, and during the early Middle Ages, it was ruled in turn by the Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans who created the Kingdom of Sicily subsequently ruled by Hohenstaufen dinasty, for a short period by Angevins, later by Iberians dinasties, by the Austrians for a brief time, and then finally unified under the Bourbons with Naples, as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Following the Expedition of the Thousand, a Giuseppe Garibaldi-led revolt during the Italian Unification process and a plebiscite, it became part of Italy in 1860. After the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946, Sicily was given special status as an autonomous region.
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management, with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses.

Travel video about destination Sicily in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is the most diverse region in Italy,a land of gods and natural forces and a place of ancient cultures. Throughout the history of Sicily there have been many battles, rulers, cultures and religions. Prior to Roman rule both the Greeks and the Carthagians fought against each other. Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed th...
Palermo street food – Sicilian Food documentary [Palermo travel guide] That was on our mind from the moment we stepped off the bus in Palermo. Rated as the 5th best city in the world for street food, we knew we were in our element. However one of us wasn’t completely “on board” with some of Palermo’s more traditional delicacies – organ meat doesn’t make much of an appearance at our dinner table back home. While Calli nervously hummed and hawed, I booked us a walking tour of Palermo’s street food scene with StrEAT Palermo Tours to understand another, tastier side of the city. Sat in peaceful scenery
The city lights shine bright around me
The smell of last night's dinner is still breezing through the air
Dozing in tranquility
The morning sun hangs high above me
Clicking camera shutters catch bewildered foreign stares
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
Clifftop is our tapestry
The sunlit sky does well to cool me
Drifting past the villas in a coach without a care
Blackjack in serenity
Fellow makers ride beside me
Walking through an archway and admiring what lies there
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
And I must be away from my home
But it feels so close to me
Sat in peaceful scenery
The city lights shine bright around me
Smell of last night's dinner is still breezing through the air
