Engineering is a wide-ranging discipline and engineers can work on a range of items each day, from aircraft engines to printers, to wind turbines and robots. Found in the agriculture, automotives, automation, aerospace, biotechnology, electronics, energy, and manufacturing industries, engineers require an understanding of mechanics, kinematics, electricity, structural analysis, and thermodynamics, in addition to knowledge of industrial equipment and machinery, transport systems, and manufacturing plants. Their work can involve planning and managing projects, researching the feasibility, design, and performance of mechanisms, components and systems, designing machines, tools, and equipment, and performing many other tasks.

Responsibilities & Skills

An engineer will have many responsibilities depending on his or her area of employment. While mechanical engineers take a product from an idea to the marketplace, manufacturing engineers work particularly with manufacturing practices, including the research and development of machines, equipment, systems, and tools. Each field requires a broad range of skills. In addition to solid problem-solving skills, an engineer should have an analytical mind, creative thinking skills, and a talent for design. Proficiency with computer-aided design is also important.

Required Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in an engineering field
• Licensing by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers
