Mali (i/ˈmɑːli/; French: [maˈli]), officially the Republic of Mali (French: République du Mali), is a landlocked country in West Africa. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa, with an area of just over 1,240,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi). The population of Mali is 14.5 million. Its capital is Bamako. Mali consists of eight regions and its borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert, while the country's southern part, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economy centers on agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali's prominent natural resources include gold, being the third largest producer of gold in the African continent, and salt. About half the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 (U.S.) a day. A majority of the population (55%) are non-denominational Muslims.
Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire (for which Mali is named), and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, the Mali Empire covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France and stretched to the west coast of Africa. In the late 19th century, during the Scramble for Africa, France seized control of Mali, making it a part of French Sudan. French Sudan (then known as the Sudanese Republic) joined with Senegal in 1959, achieving independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation. Shortly thereafter, following Senegal's withdrawal from the federation, the Sudanese Republic declared itself the independent Republic of Mali. After a long period of one-party rule, a coup in 1991 led to the writing of a new constitution and the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi-party state.

Sheikh Awssa, a co-founder of the Islamic Movement of Azawad, an armed group that controls Kidal, told Al Jazeera: "Our war is against Mali. We're not terrorists. For the US, Iraq became a quagmire and a humiliation - a strategic and moral failure that the country has spent the last four years trying to forget. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. Mali's economy has been hit hard by the county's recent crisis. According to the World Bank the economy shrunk by 1.5% last year after an average growth of around 5.7% between 2000 and 2010. The effects were particularly devastating in the north where banks ran out of money after Islamist rebels closed them down.
A short introduction to the practice of 'dama', or gift giving, in Mali.
The Economy of Mali is based to a large extent upon agriculture, with a mostly rural population engaged in subsistence agriculture. Mali is among the ten poorest nations of the world, is one of the 37 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries, and is a major recipient of foreign aid from many sources, including multilateral organizations, and bilateral programs funded by the European Union, France, United States, Canada, Netherlands, and Germany. Before 1991, the former Soviet Union, China and the Warsaw Pact countries had been a major source of economic and military aid. This video is targeted to blind users. Broulaye DIARRA, 40 years, is a vegetable producer. He learned crop production from his mother and made it his career. On his land of 3 hectares, Broulaye grows mainly vegetables such as celery, beetroot, turnip, cabbage and others. These vegetables are sold to women, who re-sell them to the customers in the city. With this system, both the producer and the women re-sellers earn a living from the activity. “Many people think that vegetable producers are not able to earn a living with their activities. Today, apart from people working in top hierarchy of the public sector, it is rare to find a public servant earning more than us per month,” says Broulaye.

During their sojourns in the foreign universities of Fez, Tunis, and Cairo, ' they astounded the most learned men of Islam by their erudition.' That these negroes were on a level with the Arabian savants is proved by the fact that they were installed as professors in Morocco and Egypt. Sebeke - Amadou and Mariam - Welcome to Mali Welcome to Mali is the fifth studio album by Mali musicians Amadou & Mariam. It was released on Because Music on November 17, 2008 in Europe and was released on Nonesuch Records on March 24, 2009 in the United States. Keith Phillips of The A.V. Club gave the album a grade of A-, writing "Welcome To Mali sounds heavily produced but not overproduced, and even with the pings and whizzing, Amadou's playing and the pair's singing insure it never sounds less than organic."[3] In another positive review, Pitchfork Media's Joe Tangari wrote: "This album is an affirmation of global connectivity and an emerging global culture that transcends and repurposes tradition as it sees fit-- the sound of Mali merging with the world at large."[4]

For a majority of Malians, obtaining basic health care is a cumbersome and sometimes impossible task; less than half the population lives within 5 km of a health post. The consequences of this poor infrastructure are grim: Mali has world's second highest mortality rate for children under five, and women have a 1 in 22 chance of dying due to pregnancy. But a new programme is working to expand basic health services to those who need it most. With the help of health workers and volunteers, a chain of services are being provided to battle Mali's child and maternal mortality rates.
Training midwives is a key action to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality. In Mali, the EU is funding a large training programme operated by a partnership between the Malian, the French and the Moroccan Red Cross. As a result, in urban centres like Bamako, mothers tend to give birth in maternity wards with qualified midwives, instead of giving birth at home. As part of this EU-sponsored programme, the Malian Red Cross also train health professionals and encourage them to go and work in rural areas. Even in the suburbs of the capital Bamako, patients have benefited from such trainings, as nurses trained by the Red Cross now run small health centres.
One billion people worldwide lack access to primary healthcare - mostly children and women. In Mali 1 in 5 children dies before reaching the age of 5, mostly due to preventable and treatable diseases. The Initiative Accès, supported by the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, aims to strengthen patients and healthcare providers through interventions on both the supply and the demand side. The ultimate goal is to improve maternal and child health and contribute to the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Ground Zero: Mali was shot in Gao, Mali, on February 21, 2013. It's basically the first legitimate combat footage to come out of the war there. Normally the French ban journalists from the frontlines and film a sanitized version of the fighting themselves and then distribute it to the media. In this case, the insurgents came to us: they slipped into Gao overnight on small boats and used suicide bombers to blast their way into government buildings. The French left the fighting to the Malian army for most of the day as a test of their combat abilities. Malian soldiers, while very brave, are almost completely untrained and had great difficulty fighting less than a dozen jihadists, some of whom were children. They fired wild bursts of automatic fire everywhere, destroying the city center. The...

Washington has a lot of influence on countries like Qatar, which is reportedly the main source of weapons and support for the Syrian rebels, so they are not absolved from responsibility, Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin told RT. With a civil war raging in Syria, French intervention in Mali, the risk of a military strike against Iran and the increased threat of Islamic terrorism in North Africa, the international community is faced with a series of complex challenges that offer no simple solutions.

The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large banco or adobe building that is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the Old Towns of Djenné it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Mali: An Invitation to Travel is a video documentary which presents a positive yet not uncritical introduction to the history, economics and culture of Mali. It aims to fill the void between the lack of information and the misinformation currently available about Africa in general and about Mali in particular. The project was initiated by members of MaliWatch (a group that promotes democracy and openness) including Abdoulaye Doucoure, Janet Goldner, Mohomoudou Houssouba, Boubacar Kane, Iba Ndiaye, and Bakary Sylla. It was produced and edited in Bamako with additional archival footage. A co-production of MaliWatch and CNCM (Le Centre National de la Cinématographie du Mali).

Aside from the presence of security and defence forces, public services are scarce or have only partially returned, and armed groups proliferate. For more than 700 years, Timbuktu, the "Mysterious City", has been a key location for camel caravans.
