Dominica (/ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/ DOM-i-NEE-kə;French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean Sea, south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 metres (4,747 ft) elevation. The population was 72,301 at the 2014 census. The capital is Roseau, located on the leeward side of the island.
The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago/Arawak and later colonised by the Europeans, predominately by the French, who arrived at the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493 ("Sunday" = "Domenica" in Italian). Great Britain took it over in 1763 after the Seven Years' War and gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.
Its name is pronounced with emphasis on the third syllable, related to its former Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot (also known as the imperial amazon), is found only on Dominica and is the island's national bird and features on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.

It's a close race... social democrat Jose Francisco Pena Gomez and Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Liberation Party have been virtually neck and neck in the polls leading up to the runoff. Balaguer will step down in August just halfway into his current four-year term in order to quiet protests of election rigging in 1994. Dominicans waited in long lines to cast their vote for president. In order to prevent fraud through repeat voting, women voted in the morning and men followed in the afternoon. The polls opened at 8:30 a.m., and most booths were filled with election offici...
The border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti functions as a free trade zone. Twice a week, the gates open and people from both sides congregate to buy goods to bring back to their respective countries. The Dajabon border crossing is one of the main border crossings where this commerce occurs, and also acts as a point of passage where Haitian migrants frequently enter and exit the Dominican Republic. In recent days, thousands of Dominican Haitians have been scrambling to complete a "regularization" process in order to avoid deportation after a court ruling effectively rendered them stateless. There were reports of small-scale initial deportations occurring Thursday, June 18, the day after the deadline to complete the process. On a larger scale, many families at risk of detainment an...

China is waging an aggressive campaign of seduction in the Caribbean, wooing countries away from relationships with rival Taiwan, opening markets for its expanding economy, promising to send tourists, and shipping police to Haiti in the first communist deployment in the Western Hemisphere. And the United States, China's Cold War enemy, is benignly watching the Asian economic superpower move into its backyard. For decades China and Taiwan used dollar diplomacy to win over small Caribbean nations where small projects building roads, bridges, wells and fisheries go a long way. But Beijing's growing economic clout is tipping the scales in the region. Caribbean trade with China increased 42 percent from 2003, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. Due Diligence of Economic Citizenship in the Commonwealth of Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean, presented by Alick Lawrence, S.C.
We are in the town of Las Terrenas located in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic. This is a walking tour of the town which starts on the Las Terranas main road and also includes a walk on the beach road. We where there in December and this is actually New Year (31/12). The video follows our walk up the main road where we try to give the viewer an idea of the atmosphere of this rather small Caribbean island fishing town. The main road offers tourists a limited number of shops, restaurants and excursion sale agents. On the beach road there are a few more restaurants and bars and also a very "limited" local shopping center. As tourists who enjoy visiting local towns in the destinations we visit we where rather disappointed with the Town of Las Terranas. Our opinion (just our opinio...

Kwéyòl was born out of the slavery era, Africans were assigned to the slavery plantations in the French Antilles; the French of their slave masters and their native tongues were somewhat useless as a method of communication since they spoke different tribal languages. As a result, they were forced to develop a new form of communication by relying on what they heard from their colonial masters and their fellow tribesmen. Sporadically, they would use words they thought they heard their colonial masters speak and combine them with their African expressions and sentence structure; thus, new words were wrought (fashioned) and given meaning. Gradually, this new method of communication amongst the slaves spread across the regions of the Caribbean. This “Creole” language (French for "indigenous") ...
Jing Ping is a kind of folk music originated on the slave plantations of Dominica, also known colloquially as an accordion band. In Dominican folk music, jing ping bands accompany a circle dance called the flirtation, as well as the Dominican quadrille. Jing ping bands are made up of a boumboum (boom pipe), syak or gwaj (scraper-rattle), tambal or tanbou (tambourine) and accordion. The double bass and banjo are also sometimes used.[5] Bamboo flutes led the jing ping ensembles before the 1940s, when accordions were introduced.
Dominica is the 176th country in my Music/Travel series. Not to be confused with Dominican Republic.
The Caribbean island of Dominica is often confused with the Dominican Republic or simply forgotten about altogether, but it is a place that has its own unique charm. Its known as the Nature Island because of its amazing environment, but its also home to one of the last groups of Carib Indians, the Caribbeans indigenous people. The Caribs lived here before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. Since then, their numbers have dwindled to almost zero in much of the region because of years of brutal treatment from the Spanish, French and British - but in Dominica, hope remains. In the early 20th century, when only about 500 Caribs were left, a 3700 acre territory was established for them on the islands east coast. Now they number around 3000. This video looks at the effect tourism has o...

Dominica is widely recognised as a world leader in responsible tourism. It was the first ever country to receive a Benchmark designation by international eco-tourism organisation Green Globe, back in 2004. The islands success comes from the fact that it has not had to develop a green tourism product put simply, sustainable tourism is the only kind of tourism Dominica has ever offered. The natural landscape and local people are key to Dominicas tourism industry. The island has no international chain hotels or large resorts and most businesses are locally owned and run. Local communities are the force behind hotels, guesthouses and tour companies, and in return, tourism benefits local villages and community projects both financially and through imparting knowledge and resources to help all ...

Other Caribbean island may have bigger white sand beaches or bigger resorts and shopping malls, but when it comes to experiencing unspoiled nature at it's most beautiful nothing compares to Dominica. Part of the Lesser Antillies chain of islands, Dominica's nine active volcanoes lift it's peaks far above the South East Caribbean Sea and neighboring Martinique and Guadeloupe, blessing it with rain forests, water falls, hot springs and boiling lakes, black sand beaches, and reefs to snorkel full of fish and bubbles.

I had the opportunity to go on the biggest vacation of my lifetime. Following the four planes it took to get there, we drove all over the small island of Dominica over the course of a week. This island is located in the south-eastern side of the Caribbean. Some call this area the west indies. We did everything from hiking a volcano to snorkeling through bubbling corral reefs. Roseau is the capital and largest city of Dominica. With a population of 16,582. It is a small and compact urban settlement, located within the Saint George parish and surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River and Morne Bruce. Built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi, it is the oldest and most important urban settlement on the island of Dominica. It is located on the west (leeward) coast of Dominica, and is a combination of modern and colonial (French Style) architecture. Roseau is Dominica's most important port for foreign trade. Some exports include bananas, bay oil, vegetables, grapefruit, oranges, and cocoa. The service sector is also a large part of the local economy. There is a prominent diocese called Roman Catholic Diocese of Roseau.

CaribNation takes a look at the issue of citizenship by investment in the Caribbean, specifically in Dominica. This episode is part one of two, and highlights the problems of such act as seen by a large group of Dominican, a group championed by Attorney Gabriel Christian, a Dominican national living in the United States. Derrice Deane interview Mr. Christian and his son Makonnen at his law practice in Maryland.
Dominica is a mountainous Caribbean island nation with natural hot springs and tropical rainforests. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is home to the volcanically heated, steam-covered Boiling Lake. The park also encompasses sulphur vents, the 65m-tall Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. Dominica's sheer underwater drop-offs create deep sheltered bays along its western coastline. These deep coastal waters are the feeding grounds for at six different species of cetaceans seen on a regular basis and an additional 16 on an occasional basis. All in all, 22 of the 33 species known in the Caribbean have been seen in Dominican waters. Disclaimer: Song featured omarion distance and is used for soundtrack purposes only.

This Island has it all, and truly earns its title as "The Nature Island." Song: Flume - Say It feat.

I gotta let you go
I gotta let you go
No more sleepless nights
I gotta let you go
I gotta let you go
I need a man who treats me right. (2x)
I want somebody
Who's always there
When I'm down to show you care
Searched the whole world over
For love that's true
Someone to tell me "I love you"
But it won't be my heart that's breaking
Cause I won't be the one to cry
I have taken all that I am taking
Now the time has come for us to say good-bye
I gotta let you go
I gotta let you go
No more sleepless nights
I gotta let you go
I gotta let you go
I need a man who treats me right
I want somebody
That's here to stay
Cause I need good lovin not a maid
Not a part-time lover
To treat me like you do
You wanna have your cake and eat it too
Just pack up all your lies
Get up and go
Cause now it's much too late to care.
I've taken all that I am taking
Oh don't move for me
This time I won't be there
