2011 Atlantic hurricane season

The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season is tied with 1887, 1995, 2010, and the following 2012 season for the third highest number of named storms since record-keeping began in 1851. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30, dates which conventionally delimit the period during each year in which most tropical cyclones develop in the Atlantic Ocean. However, the first tropical storm of the season, Arlene, did not develop until nearly a month later. The final system, Tropical Storm Sean, dissipated over the open Atlantic on November 11. Despite unfavorable conditions, seven storms reached Category 1 strength and four of those storms reached major hurricane status (Irene, Katia, Ophelia and Rina). Katia and Ophelia reached Category 4 status and tied with strongest winds, yet Ophelia reached overall peak. (Operationally, the year featured eighteen tropical storms; in post-season analysis, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) determined that an unnamed tropical storm developed in late August, north of Bermuda.)

Tropical cyclone

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane (/ˈhʌrᵻkən/ or /ˈhʌrᵻkeɪn/), typhoon /taɪˈfuːn/, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.

Tropical cyclones typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface, which ultimately recondenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation. This energy source differs from that of mid-latitude cyclonic storms, such as nor'easters and European windstorms, which are fueled primarily by horizontal temperature contrasts. The strong rotating winds of a tropical cyclone are a result of the conservation of angular momentum imparted by the Earth's rotation as air flows inwards toward the axis of rotation. As a result, they rarely form within 5° of the equator. Tropical cyclones are typically between 100 and 2,000 km (62 and 1,243 mi) in diameter.

1978 Atlantic hurricane season

The 1978 Atlantic hurricane season was the last Atlantic hurricane season to use an all-female naming list. The hurricane season officially began on June 1, and ended on November 30. It was an above average season due to a subsiding El Niño. The first storm, a subtropical storm, developed unusually early – on January 18 – and dissipated five days later without causing any damage. At the end of July and early August, short-lived Tropical Storm Amelia caused extensive flooding in Texas after dropping as much as 48 in (1,200 mm) of rain. There were 33 deaths and $110 million (1978 USD) in damage. Tropical Storm Bess and Hurricane Cora resulted in only minor land impacts, while the latter was attributed to one fatality.

Later in August, Tropical Storm Debra produced widespread effects, though damage was also relatively minor. Hurricane Ella became the northernmost Category 4 hurricane while located at 38°N, and lashed the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada with gusty winds and rip currents. Hurricanes Flossie and Kendra as well as Tropical Storms Hope, Irma, and Juliet caused minimal land impacts as a tropical cyclone. However, the precursor to Hurricane Kendra caused flooding in Puerto Rico. Hurricane Greta brought strong winds, high tides, and flooding to Central America, particularly Belize and Honduras. Greta resulted in about $25 million in damage and at least five fatalities. Overall, the storms of this season collectively caused $191 million in damage and 42 fatalities. Hurricane Greta crossed into the eastern pacific and was renamed Olivia.

Hurricane season 79 Days remaining Hurricane Irma and Jose still playing off each other and being stubborn. Jose looks to be heading in a south direction making us wonder just how long will he encounter warm water again. Models are beginning to agree but the very odd part of the all is the single Model that actually predicted Irmas path from the start is the only model that points to Florida. Miami specifically. The other oddity is a model pointing right at New Jersey. the rest all seem to agree. Is this some kind of sick joke? Or are we really this uncertain about Jose? I believe all hurricanes are a concern and being overloaded with them lately I think has made us immune to the possible danger Jose may still end up collapsing but the longer it moves south intact the bigger the chance we will see it grow again. thanks for listening to me ramble! The Irma track forecast into the weekend looks like it will keep us on the dry, calmer side of the storm but it won’t be calm for much of Florida. Most computer projections show a trough of low pressure arriving from the northwest this weekend to turn Irma toward the north. That means all of south and central Florida is a likely target. The odds of Irma heading to the News 5 area remain low. Be prepared as you would normally be during hurricane season. By the weekend, we’ll have a better idea of where Irma may go with regard to where we are. It’s over the weekend that we’ll find out when it turns. At the moment we stay on the dry side of Irma, with a northeast breeze this weekend. Jose is a category 3. That makes it the third major hurricane of the season. It is 1200 miles east of Irma in open waters. It may strengthen more and may also impact the northeastern islands of the Caribbean, before turning northward in the Atlantic and meandering for several days. In the southwestern Gulf is Hurricane Katia. It will drift southwestward to move into Mexico as a hurricane and rainmaker. There have been 3 named storms at the same time in the Atlantic before. The state of the atmosphere can change drastically by then so we watch daily to see what clues models are giving us. For the U.S. coasts it ended the longest run of hurricane luck when it became the first major hurricane to make landfall on the mainland since the 2005 season. In the early going AIR Worldwide estimates insured losses of up to $2.3 billion, and Harvey undoubtedly will further swamp the troubled National Flood Insurance Program, already $25 billion in debt. And tropical-storm traffic in a season that already is about five weeks ahead of schedule shows no sign of relenting. Another potential tropical storm was brewing on the Southeast Atlantic Coast on Monday, and even if it doesn’t earn a name, it could have some effects locally. With forecast models showing a northward jog, wind gusts up to 50 mph were possible at the Shore, the National Weather Service said, and the storm is likely to generate a harvest of what the weather service is calling “dangerous” rip currents at the Jersey and Delaware beaches. To the south, the National Hurricane Center was forecasting 3 to 6 inches of rain and perhaps up to 9 in parts of the Carolinas and Virginia. While that pales in comparison to the 2 feet in Houston, that still would be a substantial dousing. At 5 p.m. the hurricane center was seeing a 70 percent likelihood that the coastal storm will morph into Tropical Storm Irma in the next 48 hours. That would be the ninth named storm — one with peak winds of at least 39 mph — of the Atlantic Basin season. On average, that ninth storm doesn’t pop up until Oct. 4, and usually only five have formed by the end of August. The 2017 season might well add a 10th by the weekend. The hurricane center says a wave off the coast of Africa has a 70 percent chance of becoming Tropical Storm Jose in the next five days. After Harvey, Tropical Storm Irma isn't far behind Tropical Storm Harvey made a second landfall on Wednesday along the Texas-Louisiana border, and the flooding rains associated with it are moving away from Texas ans into Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Earlier in the week, it was looking like Tropical Storm Irma may form off the East Coast, giving the United States two tropical cyclone landfalls on two coasts in just as many weeks. While Harvey is still going strong, the system along the East Coast has fizzled and been pushed out into the Atlantic. Now forecasters are watching a second storm system in the middle of the Atlantic, which is now Tropical Storm Irma. Tropical Storm Irma is expected to continue to strengthen through the end of the week and into the weekend, possibly becoming a hurricane by early next week. It's still too early to say whether or not Tropical Storm Irma will make a United States landfall. Some forecast models show it staying in the Atlantic while others send it closer to Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Late August and September are peak hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, and it's not out of the ordinary to see a new tropical storm or hurricane every week or two. As of 5 pm EDT Wednesday, Irma had spent a remarkable 1.5 days as a Category 5 hurricane, which is the 7th longest stretch on record in the Atlantic, Depending on Irma’s track, hurricane conditions could extend well inland, as well as northward along the length of the peninsula. The entire Florida peninsula is within the five-day cone of uncertainty in the official NHC forecast, and all residents of these areas should pay close attention to the progress of Irma, especially along Florida’s East Coast. NHC may issue Hurricane Watches for parts of South Florida and the Keys on Thursday. Irma’s intensity will likely undergo fluctuations over the next couple of days, but intensity models show only gradual weakening, and NHC maintains Irma as a Cat 5 storm through Friday. Wind shear is predicted to remain low to moderate along Irma’s path until Saturday, and Irma will be passing over waters that are as warm or slightly warmer than its current environment (see discussion in our Tuesday PM post). Land interaction with Cuba could weaken Irma somewhat, but we must assume that Irma will be at least a Category 4 as it nears South Florida on Sunday, as predicted by NHC. Georgia/South Carolina/North Carolina: The GFS, European, and UKMET models from 12Z Wednesday track Irma from just off the northeast Florida coast inland near the Georgia/South Carolina border on Monday. The official NHC forecast places Irma near the Georgia coast on Monday afternoon at Category 3 strength. Even if Irma’s winds weaken and its Saffir-Simpson category drops, Irma could still be capable of extreme storm surge, depending on its track and the geography of its landfall location(s). Storm surge expert Dr. Hal Needham noted in a blog post Wednesday: "The region from northeast Florida (St. Augustine) through all of the Georgia coast and southwest South Carolina is particularly vulnerable to storm surge, whether or not Irma makes a direct landfall in that region." Rapidly strengthening Hurricane Jose was located about 1040 miles east of the Lesser Antilles at 5 pm EDT Wednesday, with top sustained winds at 75 mph. Only a tropical depression early Wednesday, Hurricane Katia has also intensified quickly, with estimated top winds of 75 mph as of 5 pm EDT. Located in the Bay of Campeche about 185 miles north-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, Katia is embedded in a very moist environment with numerous showers and thunderstorms along and south of a frontal zone. Irma is now the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic on record (going back to the 1800s). There have been stronger ones in the Gulf and Caribbean and certainly in other oceans around the world. It will potentially impact tens of millions of people in and around the Caribbean and Turks and Caicos and Bahamas, before aproaching the United States. Tropical Storm Jose is east of Irma and will likely become a hurricane that may impact the northeastern islands of the Caribbean before turning northward in the Atlantic. Tropical Depression #13 is off the coast of Mexico, in the southwestern Gulf, where it will meander for a few days. It may become a tropical storm and then drift into Mexico.

Hurricane Irma About 140 Miles Away From Key West Major hurricane force winds are expected over the Florida Keys at daybreak as Irma moves closer. At 2 p.m., the Category 3 hurricane was about 145 miles southeast of Key West with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. Irma is moving just north of due west along the north coast of Cuba at near 9 mph (15 km/h). A northwest motion is expected to begin later today with a turn toward the north-northwest on Sunday. On the forecast track, the core of Irma will continue to move near or over the north coast of Cuba this afternoon, and will reach the Florida Keys Sunday morning. The hurricane is expected to move along or near the southwest coast of Florida Sunday afternoon. Irma is forecast to restrengthen once it moves away from Cuba, and Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane as it approaches Florida. A NOAA plane is airborne en route to investigate Irma. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km). The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.
