STORYLINE
Hundreds of people took part in a parade in Port Stanley on Sunday to support a 'Yes' vote in the current referendum on whether the Falkland Islands will remain a territory of the United Kingdom.
The two-day vote began on Sunday and asked islanders to answer a simple yes-or-no question: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"
Those supporting a 'yes' result were out in force with an convoy of around 400 vehicles all flying Union Jacks taking part in a parade through the capital.

Stanley, Falkland Islands
Stanley (/ˈstænli/; also known as Port Stanley) is the capital of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2012 census, the town had a population of 2,121; the entire population of the Falkland Islands was 2,841 on Census Day on 15 April 2012.
Stanley is represented by five members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, currently Jan Cheek, Barry Elsby, Michael Poole, Gavin Short and Mike Summers.
Facilities and infrastructure
Stanley is the main shopping centre on the islands and the hub of East Falkland's road network. Attractions include the Falkland Islands Museum, Government House – built in 1845 and home to the Governor of the Falkland Islands – and a golf course, as well as a whalebone arch, a totem pole, several war memorials and the shipwrecks in its harbour. The Falkland Islands Company owns several shops and a hotel. Stanley has four pubs, eleven hotels and guesthouses, three restaurants, a fish and chip shop and the main tourist office. There are three churches, including the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world. A bomb disposal unit in the town is a legacy of the Falklands War.

Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands (/ˈfɔːlklənd/; Spanish: Islas Malvinas [malˈβinas]) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 miles (480 km) east of South America's southern Patagonian coast, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 4,700 square miles (12,000 km2), comprises East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, and the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The islands' capital is Stanley on East Falkland.
Controversy exists over the Falklands' discovery and subsequent colonisation by Europeans. At various times, the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements. Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, although Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. In April 1982, Argentine forces temporarily occupied the islands. British administration was restored two months later at the end of the Falklands War.

Port Stanley, Ontario
Port Stanley is a community in the Municipality of Central Elgin, Ontario, Elgin County, located on the north shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of Kettle Creek.
History
The site of Port Stanley was part of an important early route from Lake Erie to other inland waterways for a succession of explorers and travellers of the 17th and 18th centuries, serving as an important landing point and camping spot, Adrien Jolliet, brother of Louis Jolliet, landed at this location in 1669 during the first descent of the Great Lakes by Europeans, Other notable visitors included François Dollier de Casson and René de Bréhant de Galinée (1670), Jean-Baptiste Céloron de Blainville (1749) and Sir William Johnson (1761), In commemoration of this role, a site bounded by Bridge, Main and Colbourne Streets was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1923, and was marked with a cairn.
A settlement named Kettle Creek was founded here in 1812 by Lieutenant-Colonel John Bostwick , Around 1824, it was renamed Port Stanley after Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, who had visited nearby Port Talbot, Lord Stanley later became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the father of Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, Governor General of Canada, ice hockey enthusiast and donor of the first Stanley Cup in 1893,

A visit to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands as one of many stops while on a South American cruise. We toured the greater area of Stanley by bus, then walked the main streets of the port city, visited the local museum and had lunch at Bitter Sweet where we enjoyed some fish & chips and a local beer.

Hundreds of people took part in a parade in Port Stanley on Sunday to support a 'Yes' vote in the current referendum on whether the Falkland Islands will remain a territory of the United Kingdom.
The two-day vote began on Sunday and asked islanders to answer a simple yes-or-no question: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"
Those supporting a 'yes' result were out in force with an convoy of around 400 vehicles all flying Union Jacks taking part in a parade through the capital.

They consist of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, together with 776 smaller islands. Stanley, on East Falkland, is the capital. The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. Stanley (formerly known as "Port Stanley") is the capital and only true city in the Falkland Islands. It is located on the isle of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope, south of Stanley Harbour, in one of the wettest parts of the islands. As of the 2006 census, the city had a population of 2,115. My third visit to the Falkland Islands falls on the 30th anniversary year of the short-yet-never-forgotten Falklands War of 1982. A tiny windswept archipelago in the South Atlantic, I am always struck by the austerity and remoteness of this forlorn corner of the globe. These were my thoughts as I stopped here on my way from Cape to Cape.

Antarctica Trip 2012-2013, Bus ride to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
Fun description by the bus "tour guide" of population specifics on Falkland Islands. This was during a short bus ride from the airport to the sea port. We stopped along the way to see a rock quarry and some stone runs. The trip was through Cheeseman's Ecology Safaris, and was an expedition in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Geological Society of America (GSA).

They consist of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, together with 776 smaller islands. Stanley, on East Falkland, is the capital. The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.
Stanley (formerly known as "Port Stanley") is the capital and only true city in the Falkland Islands. It is located on the isle of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope, south of Stanley Harbour, in one of the wettest parts of the islands. As of the 2006 census, the city had a population of 2,115.
The video begins aboard the Star Princess as we sail into Stanley Harbor in the Falkland Islands. Next there is a tour of the town of Stanley complete with comments from our colorful local guide. Next is a visit to the penguin colony at Gypsy Cove. The video then concludes with our sail away from the Falkland Islands aboard the Star Princess.

West Point Island lies off the northwest corner of West Falkland. It is a working sheep farm but home to numerous species of plants, birds and marine mammals. The main destination for visitors to this island is Devil’s Nose – a rocky promontory with over 2,000 pairs of black-browed albatross and about 500 pairs of rockhopper penguins. Spectacular cliffs are a feature of the coastline. As well as the rich wildlife, the picturesque settlement and small harbour often teeming with dolphins make this island well worth a visit.
Access: boat from Carcass Island or scheduled cruise landing
Flora/fauna: Magellanic penguin, rockhopper penguin, black-browed albatross, rock cormorant, several species small bird, tussac plantations
Activities: Photography, hiking, wildlife watching
Accommodation: on Carcass Island
Things to Do in the Falkland Islands: West Point Island Trip

Lying an hour offshore from Carcass Island is the smaller island of West Point. Inhabited by only four people this remote spot is a also inhabited by a massive colony of Black Browed Albatross that make use of the spectacular cliffs as their breeding ground.
There is also a large colony of Rockhopper penguins and a large population of Striated Caracaras (known locally as Johnny Rock) which, given half the chance, will pinch anything you may leave lying around!
The journey from Carcass, on board Condor (an ex-German Fishing Boat that is perfectly suited to the conditions being comfortable and very safe although not what can be described as luxurious) with her captain Mike, one of the four occupants of the Island takes around one hour over seas that can be a little rough at times as you need to cross several cross-currents.
The journey over is spectacular and there are often sightings of Peale's Dolphins, Sea Lions, occasional whales (although these are a little rare in this stretch of water) and countless sea birds, including penguins in the water.
On arrival you have the chance to walk up to the Albatross Colony (although Mike will drive you if you prefer) where you are able to watch these magnificent birds use the wind that rise up the cliffs as they swoop and come into land next to their hungry chicks.
This trip really deserves time and is often frequented by cruise ships in the region, we will, wherever possible arrange this on a day when you can be in as small a group as possible to enjoy the wildlife in peace.

A tiny windswept archipelago in the South Atlantic, I am always struck by the austerity and remoteness of this forlorn corner of the globe. There is no doubt it was an incredible mission during the Falklands War. The RAF launched a Vulcan bomber 8,000-miles to put the runway at Port Stanley out of action. A logistical nightmare, the Cold War-era Vulcan needed 13 fuel tankers to reach its target and return to the Ascension Islands. The 16-hour flight on April 30 and May 1, 1982, was the longest non-stop bombing mission in history. The result was that one of its load of 1,000lb bombs hit the runway, denying the Argentines the the chance to use it for their fast jets – a key, early victory in the battle for air supremacy. Langley South - Port Stanley to Antarctica January 1981
In January 1981 a BBC film crew along with presenter Bob Langley joined HMS Endurance in the Falkland Islands for a Month. They were to film the ship and it's crew during it's second work period off the Antarctic Peninsula around James Ross Island. As far as I know the series, which later became Langley South was only shown once on terrestrial television later in 1981. It was serialised on the BBC lunchtime show Pebble Mil at Onel. This is the first of two episodes I had taken from a VHS recording at the time, so apologies if the quality isn't up to scratch. The two episodes give a unique glance back in time to an important ship that meant a lot to those who served on her, and to a part of the world that just over a year later would lose it's innocence. There is no doubt it was an incredible mission during the Falklands War. The RAF launched a Vulcan bomber 8,000-miles to put the runway at Port Stanley out of action.
A logistical nightmare, the Cold War-era Vulcan needed 13 fuel tankers to reach its target and return to the Ascension Islands. The 16-hour flight on April 30 and May 1, 1982, was the longest non-stop bombing mission in history.
The result was that one of its load of 1,000lb bombs hit the runway, denying the Argentines the the chance to use it for their fast jets – a key, early victory in the battle for air supremacy.

In January 1981 a BBC film crew along with presenter Bob Langley joined HMS Endurance in the Falkland Islands for a Month. They were to film the ship and it's crew during it's second work period off the Antarctic Peninsula around James Ross Island.
As far as I know the series, which later became Langley South was only shown once on terrestrial television later in 1981. It was serialised on the BBC lunchtime show Pebble Mil at Onel. This is the first of two episodes I had taken from a VHS recording at the time, so apologies if the quality isn't up to scratch.
The two episodes give a unique glance back in time to an important ship that meant a lot to those who served on her, and to a part of the world that just over a year later would lose it's innocence.
Dedicated to the shipmates that are no longer with us.

Two Q (quick response air defence) Tornado’s from 1435 Flt are being refuelled. Each aircraft is fully armed with 27mm high explosive rounds, 4 wing mounted AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and 4 belly mounted Skyflash missiles.
The Herc is flying as fast as it can meanwhile the Tornado’s are struggling to fly as slow as they can all of which means there wasn’t much clean air between the rear of the Herc and the nose of the Tornado.
In 1995 the Q jets were launched on average once a month to repel Argentine jets heading towards Falkland’s airspace and that meant the jets had to be airborne in a matter of minutes. It was always a race between Q1 & Q2 teams to see who could get their jet up first…once Q duties had finished for the week I seem to remember there being a drinking penalty in the bar if your jet was last up.
