Kumari, or Kumari Devi, or Living Goddess – Nepal is the tradition of worshiping young pre-pubescent girls as manifestations of the divine female energy or devi in Hindu religious traditions. The word Kumari is derived from the Sanskrit Kaumarya, meaning "princess."
In Nepal, a Kumari is a pre-pubescent girl selected from the Shakya caste or Bajracharya clan of the Nepalese Newari community. The Kumari is revered and worshiped by some of the country's Hindus as well as the Nepali Buddhists, though not the Tibetan Buddhists. While there are several Kumaris throughout Nepal, with some cities having several, the best known is the Royal Kumari of Kathmandu, and she lives in the Kumari Ghar, a palace in the center of the city. The selection process for her is especially rigorous. As of 2010, the Royal Kumari was Matina Shakya, aged four, installed in October 2008 by the Maoist government that replaced the monarchy. Unika Bajracharya, selected in April 2014 as the Kumari of Patan, is the second largest living goddess.

At the centre of an ecstatic throng a nine year-old girl is paraded through the streets. Until she reaches puberty this little girl will bless the devoted. It’s hard for her family, but they have faith in the priests who identified her as an incarnation of the Kumari goddess when she was just three. “Since my daughter is a God I know we shouldn’t miss her, but we do. She doesn’t think about us much… when I see her she just says hello and leaves.” The roots of the tradition are less than holy: the result of 18th-century kings devoting young girls to God in atonement for their abuse of children. The age limit is troubling too; after all, what does a Goddess do when she’s no longer revered? Meeting a teenage Kumari we find her cleaning – she has no other employable skills.

Meena Kumari (1 August 1933– 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was an Indian film actress, singer and poet under the pseudonym "Naaz", also known as The Tragedy Queen & often called the Cinderella of the Indian films.
Indian film critics regarded Meena Kumari as 'historically incomparable' actress of Hindi cinema.[6]. Meena Kumari made waves as an actor beyond compare in the 60s, Kumari got the author-backed roles and her male co-stars were said to be wary of starring opposite her.[7] During a career spanning 33 years from her childhood to her death, she starred in around 92 films of variety of genres, many of which have achieved classic and cult status today such as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pakeezah, Mere Apne, Aarti, Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Foot Path, Char Dil Char Rahen, Daera, Azaad, Miss Mary, Sharada, Dil Ek Mandir, Kaajal, Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan, Majhli Didi, Phool Aur Patthar, Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan, Yahudi, Halaku, Baadbaan and Kohinoor. Kumari was also a playback singer, as a child artist till 1945, later as an actress and as a heroine in Duniya Ek Sarai, Piya Ghar Aaja and Bichchade Balam.[8]
Vinod Mehta (writer of Meena Kumari - The Classic Biography) was told by a director, "Even Dilip Kumar (the tragedy king) found it difficult to keep his calm in front of her."[9] Raaj Kumar would often forget his dialogues while working with Meena Kumari on set.[10] Madhubala was also a fan of Meena Kumari and said, ‘She has the most unique voice. No other heroine has it.’[11] Satyajit Ray described Kumari as "undoubtedly an actress of the highest calibre".[6] Meena Kumari empathized greatly with Marilyn Monroe the fact that Marilyn's husband, Arthur Miller, had some passing similarities to Meena's husband Kamal Amrohi, made the identification closer.[6]It is said throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love–hate relationship with movies.[12]
Meena Kumari won four Filmfare awards in the Best Actress category and was the first recipient of the inaugural 1st Filmfare 1954 best actress award for Baiju Bawra with a consecutive win in 2nd Filmfare 1955 for Parineeta. Kumari made history at the 10th Filmfare 1963 by receiving all of the nominations for Best Actress and won for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.[13] On 13th Filmfare 1966 Kumari won her last best actress Filmfare award for Kaajal.
The greatest hallmark of Meena Kumari lied in her ability to depict the struggle of Indian women existing especially in the 50s and 60s, Kumari's onscreen persona is described as a perfect example of real traditional Bharatiya Nari by the Indian film fraternity like Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and Javed Akhtar.[14] She gained a reputation for playing grief-stricken and tragic roles, and her performances have been praised and reminisced throughout the years. Her portrayal of 'Sahibjaan',a nautch girl with a golden heart in Pakeezah under Kamal Amrohi's direction became a historical piece of document.In her performances, beauty, aristocracy, tragedy, personality all blended into one. Her role as Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is considered one of the best performances in Indian Cinema. The role of Chhoti Bahu of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was dangerously close to Kumari's own tragic life. Like the character of Chhoti Bahu, in real life too, Meena Kumari became addicted to alcohol.[16] Kumari's life and prosperous career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972.

Like one of her best-known roles, Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Kumari became addicted to alcohol. Her life and prosperous career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972. Kumari is often cited by media and literary sources as "The Tragedy Queen", both for her frequent portrayal of sorrowful and dramatic roles in her films and her real-life story.

Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam
Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (Hindi: साहिब बीबी और ग़ुलाम; 'The Master, The Wife and the Slave') is a 1962 Indian Hindi film produced by Guru Dutt and directed by Abrar Alvi. It is based on a Bengali novel, Shaheb Bibi Golam by Bimal Mitra, and is a look into the tragic fall of the haveli-dom and feudalism in Bengal during the British Raj. The title of the movie and the story is a reference to the plot simultaneously exploring a platonic friendship between a beautiful, lonely wife (Bibi) of an aristocrat (Sahib) and a career-driven low-income part-time servant (Ghulam). The film's music is by Hemant Kumar and lyrics were by Shakeel Badayuni. The film is also noted for its brilliant cinematography by V. K. Murthy. The film stars Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari, Rehman, Waheeda Rehman and Nazir Hussain.
The film was a major critical and commercial success, with critics attributing it to Meena Kumari's performance as Chhoti Bahu, which is regarded as one of the best performances of Hindi cinema. It won four Filmfare Awards, including Best Movie award, was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival, and was chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars. However it was not accepted as a nominee. The academy wrote a letter to Guru Dutt saying a woman who drinks was not a permissible taboo in their culture. Indiatimes Movies ranks it amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films.

Kumari was also a playback singer, as a child artist till 1945, later as an actress and as a heroine in Duniya Ek Sarai, Piya Ghar Aaja and Bichchade Balam.[8] Vinod Mehta (writer of Meena Kumari - The Classic Biography) was told by a director, "Even Dilip Kumar (the tragedy king) found it difficult to keep his calm in front of her."[9] Raaj Kumar would often forget his dialogues while working with Meena Kumari on set.[10] Madhubala was also a fan of Meena Kumari and said, ‘She has the most unique voice. No other heroine has it.’[11] Satyajit Ray described Kumari as "undoubtedly an actress of the highest calibre".[6] Meena Kumari empathized greatly with Marilyn Monroe the fact that Marilyn's husband, Arthur Miller, had some passing similarities to Meena's husband Kamal Amrohi, made the identification closer.[6]It is said throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love–hate relationship with movies.[12] Meena Kumari won four Filmfare awards in the Best Actress category and was the first recipient of the inaugural 1st Filmfare 1954 best actress award for Baiju Bawra with a consecutive win in 2nd Filmfare 1955 for Parineeta. Kumari made history at the 10th Filmfare 1963 by receiving all of the nominations for Best Actress and won for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.[13] On 13th Filmfare 1966 Kumari won her last best actress Filmfare award for Kaajal. The greatest hallmark of Meena Kumari lied in her ability to depict the struggle of Indian women existing especially in the 50s and 60s, Kumari's onscreen persona is described as a perfect example of real traditional Bharatiya Nari by the Indian film fraternity like Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and Javed Akhtar.[14] She gained a reputation for playing grief-stricken and tragic roles, and her performances have been praised and reminisced throughout the years. Her portrayal of 'Sahibjaan',a nautch girl with a golden heart in Pakeezah under Kamal Amrohi's direction became a historical piece of document.In her performances, beauty, aristocracy, tragedy, personality all blended into one. Her role as Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is considered one of the best performances in Indian Cinema. The role of Chhoti Bahu of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was dangerously close to Kumari's own tragic life. Like the character of Chhoti Bahu, in real life too, Meena Kumari became addicted to alcohol.[16] Kumari's life and prosperous career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972. -

It’s hard for her family, but they have faith in the priests who identified her as an incarnation of the Kumari goddess when she was just three. “Since my daughter is a God I know we shouldn’t miss her, but we do. She doesn’t think about us much… when I see her she just says hello and leaves.” The roots of the tradition are less than holy: the result of 18th-century kings devoting young girls to God in atonement for their abuse of children. The age limit is troubling too; after all, what does a Goddess do when she’s no longer revered? Meeting a teenage Kumari we find her cleaning – she has no other employable skills.

Meena Kumari (1 August 1933– 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was an Indian film actress, singer and poet under the pseudonym "Naaz", also known as The Tragedy Queen & often called the Cinderella of the Indian films.
Indian film critics regarded Meena Kumari as 'historically incomparable' actress of Hindi cinema.[6]. Meena Kumari made waves as an actor beyond compare in the 60s, Kumari got the author-backed roles and her male co-stars were said to be wary of starring opposite her.[7] During a career spanning 33 years from her childhood to her death, she starred in around 92 films of variety of genres, many of which have achieved classic and cult status today such as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pakeezah, Mere Apne, Aarti, Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Foot Path, Char Dil Char Rahen, Daera, Azaad, Miss Mary, Sharada, Dil Ek Mandir, Kaajal, Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan, Majhli Didi, Phool Aur Patthar, Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan, Yahudi, Halaku, Baadbaan and Kohinoor. Kumari was also a playback singer, as a child artist till 1945, later as an actress and as a heroine in Duniya Ek Sarai, Piya Ghar Aaja and Bichchade Balam.[8]
Vinod Mehta (writer of Meena Kumari - The Classic Biography) was told by a director, "Even Dilip Kumar (the tragedy king) found it difficult to keep his calm in front of her."[9] Raaj Kumar would often forget his dialogues while working with Meena Kumari on set.[10] Madhubala was also a fan of Meena Kumari and said, ‘She has the most unique voice. No other heroine has it.’[11] Satyajit Ray described Kumari as "undoubtedly an actress of the highest calibre".[6] Meena Kumari empathized greatly with Marilyn Monroe the fact that Marilyn's husband, Arthur Miller, had some passing similarities to Meena's husband Kamal Amrohi, made the identification closer.[6]It is said throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love–hate relationship with movies.[12]
Meena Kumari won four Filmfare awards in the Best Actress category and was the first recipient of the inaugural 1st Filmfare 1954 best actress award for Baiju Bawra with a consecutive win in 2nd Filmfare 1955 for Parineeta. Kumari made history at the 10th Filmfare 1963 by receiving all of the nominations for Best Actress and won for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.[13] On 13th Filmfare 1966 Kumari won her last best actress Filmfare award for Kaajal.
The greatest hallmark of Meena Kumari lied in her ability to depict the struggle of Indian women existing especially in the 50s and 60s, Kumari's onscreen persona is described as a perfect example of real traditional Bharatiya Nari by the Indian film fraternity like Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and Javed Akhtar.[14] She gained a reputation for playing grief-stricken and tragic roles, and her performances have been praised and reminisced throughout the years. Her portrayal of 'Sahibjaan',a nautch girl with a golden heart in Pakeezah under Kamal Amrohi's direction became a historical piece of document.In her performances, beauty, aristocracy, tragedy, personality all blended into one. Her role as Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is considered one of the best performances in Indian Cinema. The role of Chhoti Bahu of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was dangerously close to Kumari's own tragic life. Like the character of Chhoti Bahu, in real life too, Meena Kumari became addicted to alcohol.[16] Kumari's life and prosperous career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972.
