Eritrea (/ˌɛrᵻˈtreɪ.ə/ or /ˌɛrᵻˈtriːə/;, officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the East Africa. With its capital at Asmara, it is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. The nation has a total area of approximately 117,600 km2 (45,406 sq mi), and includes the Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands. Its name Eritrea is based on the Greek name for the Red Sea (Ἐρυθρὰ Θάλασσα Erythra Thalassa), which was first adopted for Italian Eritrea in 1890.
Eritrea is a multi-ethnic country, with nine recognized ethnic groups in its population of around six million. Most residents speak Afroasiatic languages, either of the Semitic or Cushitic branches. Among these communities, the Tigrinya make up about 55% of the population, with the Tigre people constituting around 30% of inhabitants. In addition, there are a number of Nilo-Saharan-speaking Nilotic ethnic minorities. Most people in the territory adhere to Christianity or Islam.

(16 May 2000) Natural Sound XFA The United States is pressing for a Security Council vote on an arms embargo against Ethiopia and Eritrea following the latest flare-up in their two-year war - but Russia strongly objects. Russia, which has been a major arms supplier to Ethiopia, called instead on both countries to cooperate with the Organisation of African Unity, which has been trying to broker a peace deal. Experts from the 15 nations on the Security Council were scheduled to meet on Tuesday to try to reach consensus on a resolution. Fighting between the Horn of Africa neighbours broke out on several fronts last Friday and Ethiopia is reported to have made a substantial push into territory previously held by Eritrea. English/Nat Five years after it wrested its freedom from Ethiopia, the tiny state of Eritrea is struggling to get its economy back on the rails. The fledgling republic has won praise from the U-S for its financial responsibility. And there are signs that one of the world's poorest nations may be heading for a brighter future. A new beginning for an old train. This 1957 locomotive has just been repaired in Eritrea's highland capital Asmara and is on its way down the coast to pick up a journey that was interrupted two decades ago. The railway was one of the victims of the country's 30-year struggle for independence against Ethiopia which ended in victory for the Eritreans in 1991. In wartime, the Eritreans applied their resourcefulness to defeat a mighty army. Now...

When a small Vancouver mining company Nevsun struck gold in a remote corner of Africa, it started with so much promise. In remote Eritrea, Nevsun built a mine that was generating $700 million in profits in its first four years of operation. But it was also generating a lot of controversy – because Nevsun was partnered with a brutal dictatorship that runs the country and controls 40% of the mine. That has led to allegations by the UN and Human Rights Watch that the regime has used conscripted military labour in the mine. The Eritrea government has also been accused of funneling arms to the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Nevsun denies the allegations of human rights abuses and insists it is a “template for responsible international business.” What is the price of doing business with a dictato...

Eritrea: Propaganda or truth? benevolent dictator or power hungry tyrant? Documentary Looks into country's numerous achievements made in the health, economic and infrastructure sectors. Overall thoughts on the documentary: Aside from the host's incorrect description of Eritrea as being in isolation, which was likely intended to grab the viewers attention more than anything, the documentary does give an insightful, balanced and entertaining perspective of a country that has been unfairly targeted for over a decade by successive U.S. administrations. Eritrea emerged from its long war of independence in 1993 only to plunge once again into military conflict, first with Yemen and then, more devastatingly, with its old adversary, Ethiopia. The Ethiopian armed forces in a show of force blasted past Eritrean defences on at least 5 fronts, and sent residents of Eritrea fleeing in a mass panic. The scale of Eritrea's defeat was evident after their leader Issaias Afeworke, after learning about the horrible massacre of his troops on the Badme front, apparently made a late night phone call to UN secretary General Kofi Annan to notify him of Eritrea accepting the peace deal it had rejected only weeks prior. Ethiopian soldiers with a coordinated pincer movement surprised the Eritrean defenders, who after initially resisting, fell into full retreat as the might and force of the Ethiopian army was too much to bear. An estimate 30,000 Eritrean soldiers were either killed or wounded between February 22nd and February 26th 1999. Having d...

Also, Ethiopia was in the grip of internal conflict ; in addition, in the north west ,Sudan militarily started to attack Ethiopian garrison towns , also there was a strong rebel movements in the Sahel Eritrea, Begemder and Tigray regions . All these stretched Ethiopia's army beyond its capacity. thus, the condition was ideal for Somalia's plan. His documentary deals with the role Eritrean women played in the 30 year independence struggle against Ethiopia and its impact today on society. He wanted to know the personal stories of these Tegadelti [freedom fighters in Tigrinya], and what lead them to join the armed struggle, how their experiences in Meda [battle fields] helped form their perception of women's rights issues and what type of future they believe awaits the next generation of Eritrean women. During the 30 year independence struggle, Eritrean women played a very important and significant role in helping secure t...

Since the conclusion of the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia in 2000, the Government of Eritrea has become increasingly isolated, militarized and, many would argue, misunderstood on the world stage. A focal point for violent insecurity across the region, Eritrea is vital to the stability of the east and northeast Africa and beyond. Eritrea's relationship with the West is complicated, although it has developed relations with the United States on the latter's on-going war with terrorism. Eritrea's relations with its neighbors have been stained from a series of conflicts and disputes. On Friday, January 22, 2009, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars hosted a book discussion on “Eritrea's External Relations: Understanding Its Regional Role and Foreign Policy.” Presente...
The people of the proud yet small country of Eritrea talk to us about how war with their once-comrade neighbour Ethiopia has shaped an entire generation. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures We look at the front line of Eritrean soldiers, men alongside women, defending their border against a one-time friend. Since hostilities broke out between newly independent Ethiopia and Eritrea two years ago, the world has looked on helplessly. Both countries won their freedom by fighting against the harsh Mengistu regime. Why the are now fighting each other is a question few can answer. Ostensibly it is over a small border dispute, but that hardly seems to justify the scale of this conflict. Half-Eritrean, half-Ethiopians do not have an...

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. Country #13 in 2015 was BOTSWANA! This country surprised us, we weren't really sure what to expect here but ended up being surprised and so much more. How great is that? Lonely Planet just voted Botswana as the top destination to visit in 2016, with good reason. We bush camped in the Okavango Delta, slept among elephants and had a fantastic river safari in Chobe National Park. Our only regret? That we didn't have more days to spend here! Explore Botswana on our travel blog at http://www.divergenttravelers.com/destinations/botswana/

He found fate in his way
The only cause he fought for
He discovered the only thing
To loose his life
In the wild land of trees
Rivers and stories
Tell the believers to be afraid
Once upon a time
A story has been told
It recalls life itself. About dreams
Glory...
A quest for glory
A world...
Where skies are blue
He fought with his heart
Agaiinst spells and sorceress
A brave man he is
Fighting for destiny
