I submitted this short film as a finalist in Conde Nast Traveler Magazine's "2008 $25,000 Dream Trip Contest". I didn't win, but I had a great time making this short film about the great little town I used to live in -- Polson, Montana.
Izzie first wanted to be a drummer in kindergarten and has kept pursuing it since that time. Overcoming fear of auditioning was a necessary step in finding success as a drummer. The talk finishes with a demonstration of Izzie's drumming skills, which are fierce.
At the time of this talk, Izzie is a 9th grader at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education.

After a 1993 summer vacation in Crested Butte and Ouray, Colorado (pictures of which you can find in my Flickr archives), I decided that while the scenery was spectacular, Colorado was too crowded and over-run by tourists, visitors, and owners of summer/retirement/ski homes. So I looked elsewhere in the summer of 1994, and was intrigued by a large patch of blue when I looked at a map of Montana. It turned out to be Flathead Lake -- the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River -- and it provided the inspiration for spending a week in the tiny little town of Polson, on the southern shore of the lake.
In 1996 and 1997, I spent two full summers in Polson, and grew quite attached to the town and its surrounding mountains, rivers, and lake. You might also be interested in some of my observations about life in Polson and Montana, which I wrote about in blogs titled "The Polson Parade," and "Leaving Montana." But then life changed, other things intervened, and I drifted away from Montana altogether.
In the summer of 2010, I had a chance to re-visit Polson, and spend three short days driving around to re-acquaint myself with the area. It's been over a dozen years, so I was expecting some changes ... but in general, the town of about 5,000 people was pretty much the same. My favorite restaurant had closed down, a Mailboxes Etc outlet had been replaced by a video-rental outlet, and the local McDonald's outlet was no longer posting all of the bounced checks from desperate customers on its wall (hey, you've got to be desperate if you order a Big Mac with fries, and pay with a check that bounces!). It looked like some of the local ranchers and farmers had sold off some of their acreage, for there were a few new "vacation communities" filling up what had been open meadows and pasture just outside of town.
But the lake had not changed at all, and the Mission Mountains along the eastern shore of the lake were as pretty as ever. Just for the heck of it, I got up at 5 AM one morning, and photographed the pre-dawn stillness on the lake, and then the changing colors of clouds above the lake as the sun slowly rose up to peek over the top of the mountains. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to drive down to the Kerr Dam, and I didn't drive all the way around the north end of the lake: I only made it up to Big Fork on the eastern side, and LakeSide on the western side of the lake. I was going to take the half-day white-water rafting trip down the Flathead River, south of the dam, but there wasn't time for that, either ... Nor was there any time for fishing, or even to rent a jet-ski and zoom around on the broad expanse of water in Polson Bay, at the south end of the lake.
So maybe there will be ample cause to go back to Polson once again, either next year or the year after. But for now, I've got a visual record of the sights and scenes that I saw on this trip. Roughly half of the photos are 5-image handheld HDR composites, and the other half are more traditional digital images, taken during a sunset boat cruise out on the lake.

Polson, Montana
Polson (Salish: nč̓mqnetkʷ, Ktunaxa: kwat̕aq̓nuk) is a city in Lake County, Montana, United States, on the southern shore of Flathead Lake. It is also on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The population was 4,488 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. The city was named after pioneer rancher David Polson.
Geography
Polson is located at 47°41′17″N 114°9′24″W / 47.68806°N 114.15667°W / 47.68806; -114.15667 (47.688089, -114.156766).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.80 km2), of which, 4.14 square miles (10.72 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.
Demographics
2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,488 people, 1,991 households, and 1,150 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,084.1 inhabitants per square mile (418.6/km2). There were 2,506 housing units at an average density of 605.3 per square mile (233.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.7% White, 0.2% African American, 15.7% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 8.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.4% of the population.

Flathead Lake
Flathead Lake (Salish: člq̓etkʷ ) is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area that is west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States, taking Red Lake (Minnesota) and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river. With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi (496 km2) and 197 sq mi (510 km2), Flathead Lake is slightly larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, but it is much smaller in volume.
The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Flathead Lake has a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m), and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). This makes Flathead Lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet was raised 10 ft (3.0 m) by Kerr Dam. It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.

Montana
Montana 
i/mɒnˈtænə/ is a state in the Western region of the United States. The state's name is derived from the Spanish word montaña (mountain). Montana has several nicknames, although none official, including "Big Sky Country" and "The Treasure State", and slogans that include "Land of the Shining Mountains" and more recently "The Last Best Place". Montana is ranked 4th in size, but 44th in population and 48th in population density of the 50 United States. The western third of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges. Smaller island ranges are found throughout the state. In total, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.
The economy is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming. Other significant economic activities include oil, gas, coal and hard rock mining, lumber, and the fastest-growing sector, tourism. The health care, service, and government sectors also are significant to the state's economy. Millions of tourists annually visit Glacier National Park, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Yellowstone National Park.

I know, I know. I'm a little behind the times with this whole #googleglass thing. The futuristic technology was SUPPOSED to be "the next big thing" but Google Glass simply sputtered. Still! The ability to record footage from a first person point of view is without a doubt a quite spectacular thing. I decided to roll tape along the busiest street in my old home town of Polson, Montana. Why? Because A) it hasn't been done before. And B) this footage might bring some YouTubers a wonderful view of the little Montana town by the awe inspiring Flathead lake. On a personal note, it is nice to capture this footage of a town I've grown so fond of, yet have moved on from. I think it will also be a nice treat to give other Polson graduates a chance to see how the town is holding up. It will be fun to look back on this video years from now and compare the sights to today. Enjoy! After a 1993 summer vacation in Crested Butte and Ouray, Colorado (pictures of which you can find in my Flickr archives), I decided that while the scenery was spectacular, Colorado was too crowded and over-run by tourists, visitors, and owners of summer/retirement/ski homes. So I looked elsewhere in the summer of 1994, and was intrigued by a large patch of blue when I looked at a map of Montana. It turned out to be Flathead Lake -- the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River -- and it provided the inspiration for spending a week in the tiny little town of Polson, on the southern shore of the lake. After a 1993 summer vacation in Crested Butte and Ouray, Colorado (pictures of which you can find in my Flickr archives), I decided that while the scenery was spectacular, Colorado was too crowded and over-run by tourists, visitors, and owners of summer/retirement/ski homes. So I looked elsewhere in the summer of 1994, and was intrigued by a large patch of blue when I looked at a map of Montana. It turned out to be Flathead Lake -- the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River -- and it provided the inspiration for spending a week in the tiny little town of Polson, on the southern shore of the lake.
In 1996 and 1997, I spent two full summers in Polson, and grew quite attached to the town and its surrounding mountains, rivers, and lake. You might also be interested in some of my observations about life in Polson and Montana, which I wrote about in blogs titled "The Polson Parade," and "Leaving Montana." But then life changed, other things intervened, and I drifted away from Montana altogether.
In the summer of 2010, I had a chance to re-visit Polson, and spend three short days driving around to re-acquaint myself with the area. It's been over a dozen years, so I was expecting some changes ... but in general, the town of about 5,000 people was pretty much the same. My favorite restaurant had closed down, a Mailboxes Etc outlet had been replaced by a video-rental outlet, and the local McDonald's outlet was no longer posting all of the bounced checks from desperate customers on its wall (hey, you've got to be desperate if you order a Big Mac with fries, and pay with a check that bounces!). It looked like some of the local ranchers and farmers had sold off some of their acreage, for there were a few new "vacation communities" filling up what had been open meadows and pasture just outside of town.
But the lake had not changed at all, and the Mission Mountains along the eastern shore of the lake were as pretty as ever. Just for the heck of it, I got up at 5 AM one morning, and photographed the pre-dawn stillness on the lake, and then the changing colors of clouds above the lake as the sun slowly rose up to peek over the top of the mountains. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to drive down to the Kerr Dam, and I didn't drive all the way around the north end of the lake: I only made it up to Big Fork on the eastern side, and LakeSide on the western side of the lake. I was going to take the half-day white-water rafting trip down the Flathead River, south of the dam, but there wasn't time for that, either ... Nor was there any time for fishing, or even to rent a jet-ski and zoom around on the broad expanse of water in Polson Bay, at the south end of the lake.
So maybe there will be ample cause to go back to Polson once again, either next year or the year after. But for now, I've got a visual record of the sights and scenes that I saw on this trip. Roughly half of the photos are 5-image handheld HDR composites, and the other half are more traditional digital images, taken during a sunset boat cruise out on the lake.

I know, I know. I'm a little behind the times with this whole #googleglass thing. The futuristic technology was SUPPOSED to be "the next big thing" but Google Glass simply sputtered. Still! The ability to record footage from a first person point of view is without a doubt a quite spectacular thing.
I decided to roll tape along the busiest street in my old home town of Polson, Montana. Why? Because A) it hasn't been done before. And B) this footage might bring some YouTubers a wonderful view of the little Montana town by the awe inspiring Flathead lake.
On a personal note, it is nice to capture this footage of a town I've grown so fond of, yet have moved on from. I think it will also be a nice treat to give other Polson graduates a chance to see how the town is holding up. It will be fun to look back on this video years from now and compare the sights to today.
