Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد ,بغداد Kurdish: Bexda, Iraqi pronunciation: [bɐʁˈd̪ɑːd̪]) is the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The population of Baghdad, as of 2011, is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran). According to the government, the population of the country has reached 35 million, with 9 million in the capital.
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic world. This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning".
Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arab culture.

Hours after winning a landslide in the secession referendum, the Kurdistan Regional Government rejected Baghdad’s demand to hand over control of its airports. 92%of Kurds who posted a ballot voted “yes”. The result was announced despite a last-minute appeal to cancel the referendum by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. The number of people killed in Sunday's suicide bomb attack in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has risen to 165, interior ministry officials say. The government has declared three days of mourning after the huge blast, which injured 225 others. A lorry packed with explosives was detonated in the Karrada district while families were shopping for the holiday marking the end of Ramadan. It is believed to be the deadliest single bomb attack in Iraq since 2007. The director of Erbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan says she has been told by Baghdad that all international flights will be banned from six pm local time on Friday. Airlines including Middle East operators were already beginning to cancel flights on Wednesday. Long lines of travellers have built up at the airport wondering if they would be able to get away, and NGOs and relief agencies are worried the ban will slow down refugee aid. The Iraqi government told the Kurds they had until the Friday… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2017/09/28/baghdad-says-erbril-airport-off-limits-for-international-flights-from-friday What are the top stories today? (6 Sep 2012) A wave of new American-style restaurants is spreading across the Iraqi capital. Baghdad's embattled residents can finally get their milkshakes, chili-cheese dogs and buckets of crispy fried chicken at a growing number of fast food outlets. US style diners are enticing customers, hungry for alternatives to traditional offerings like lamb kebabs and fire-roasted carp. The fad is a sign that Iraqis, saddled with violence for years and still experiencing almost daily bombings and shootings, are prepared to move on and embrace ordinary pleasures - like pizza. Iraqi entrepreneurs and investors from nearby countries, not big multi-national chains, are driving the food craze. They see Iraq as an untapped market of increasingly adventurous eaters where competition is low and the...
The war with ISIS in Iraq is drawing to a close, but the day after will be no easier. With Iraqi Kurdistan going for an independence referendum, Baghdad may not be eager to accept the vote. The already volatile situation in the Middle East might be destabilized even further by the establishment of a Kurdish region – or, perhaps, help stabilize it instead. Will the price of Kurdish independence be too high? We ask Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan Nechirvan Barzani. Iraqi officials say a car bombing at a popular ice cream shop in Baghdad killed at least 10 and wounded dozens. Hospital and police officials say the blast happened late Monday night, just days into the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight hours. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the blast in central Baghdad was caused by a parked car. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. The president of Iraqi Kurdistan has signalled it will draw the borders of a future Kurdish state if Baghdad does not accept a vote for independence in a referendum due later this month. Massoud Barzani told the BBC he wanted to reach an agreement with the central government if Kurds opted to secede. Iraq's prime minister has rejected the referendum as unconstitutional. Mr Barzani also warned the Kurds would fight any group that tried to change the "reality" in Kirkuk by force. Kurdish Peshmerga forces have taken control of the oil-rich city, which has large Arab and Turkmen populations, and other areas claimed by Baghdad over the past three years while driving out the jihadist group Islamic State. Shia militias have said they will not allow Kirkuk to be part of an independent Kurdistan. ...

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. The region now known as Iraq has always been, in many ways, world history's ground zero. From this rich territory sprang the earliest cities and empires, earliest armies, and earliest tyrants. The Kings: From Babylon To Baghdad tells the story of Iraq through the history of its rulers, from Sargon the Great to Saddam Hussein. This feature-length documentary explores the connections and relevance between ancient and modern Iraq and between Iraq and the rest of the planet. Using dialogue drawn directly from primary sources - original texts of ancient records - it depicts events in dramatic, living reenactments. Lush cinematography filmed on location frames the dramatizations and contemporary reportage. And interviews with the world's leading experts on the historical and current relevance ...
