Leiden (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈlɛi̯.də(n)]; in English and archaic Dutch also Leyden) is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 122,000, but the city forms one densely connected agglomeration with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude with around 190,000 inhabitants. Leiden is located on the Old Rhine, at a distance of some 20 kilometres (12 miles) from The Hague to its south and some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Amsterdam to its north. The recreational area of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) lies just to the northeast of Leiden.
A university city since 1575, Leiden houses Leiden University, the oldest university of the Netherlands, and Leiden University Medical Center. It is twinned with Oxford, the location of England's oldest university.
Leiden was formed on an artificial hill (today called the Burcht van Leiden) at the confluence of the rivers Oude and Nieuwe Rijn (Old and New Rhine). In the oldest reference to this, from circa 860, the settlement was called Leithon. The name is said to be from Germanic *leitha- "canal".
A Leyden jar, or Leiden jar, is a device that "stores" static electricity between two electrodes on the inside and outside of a glass jar. A Leyden jar typically consists of a glass jar with metal foil cemented to the inside and the outside surfaces, and a metal terminal projecting vertically through the jar lid to make contact with the inner foil. It was the original form of a capacitor (originally known as a "condenser").
It was invented independently by German cleric Ewald Georg von Kleist on 11 October 1745 and by Dutch scientist Pieter van Musschenbroek of Leiden (Leyden) in 1745–1746. The invention was named for the city.
The Leyden jar was used to conduct many early experiments in electricity, and its discovery was of fundamental importance in the study of electrostatics. Previously, researchers had to resort to insulated conductors of large dimensions to store a charge. The Leyden jar provided a much more compact alternative. Leyden jars are still used in education to demonstrate the principles of electrostatics.

Vamos a fabricar uno de los primeros condensadores de la historia de la electricidad. Veremos como se puede acumular electricidad estática y al juntar los cables se produce una pequeña chispa.

Demonstration of a dissectible capacitor or dissectible Leyden jar and an explanation of how it works. I charge it up to a high voltage using a Wimshurst machine and then take it apart. When I do, the voltage on the plates rises and, through ionization, charge moves from the plates to the dielectric container. This leaves the plates mostly discharged. I can even touch the plates together, to prove they're discharged. When I reassemble the capacitor/Leyden jar, the charge is still on the dielectric and so I get a spark. Me estoy portando mal
Y gritaré tu nombre, mujer, tu nombre
Mi amor no sabes que a mi edad
También se puede amar
Me estoy portando mal
No debo obrar así
Yo se que no es feliz
Pero tiene su hogar
Porque la conocí y la llegué a querer
Si hoy puedo enloquecer si no la veo más
Y gritaré tu nombre, mujer, tu nombre
Mi amor no sabes que a mi edad
