There are various terms that people use while talking about electricity in your regular conversations, but many a times you do not know what each of these mean or how they impact you.
With this video we will try to explain some basic terms that you use, but might not be aware of the exact meaning of the same.
Firstly, what is wattage?
While buying appliances, many a time you might look at their wattage. For e.g. you may go for a 14 W CFL, or 3KW geyser. But what exactly is watts?
Watts is the rate of electricity consumption, just like speed is the rate of distance traveled. As speed is not always equal to the actual distance traveled, watts does not mean actual electricity consumed. The actual number will depend on the time for which it is used.
please note, just like all other units of measurement, 1 Kilo watt = 1000 Watts.
Next you may think: Then what is the unit of Electricity Consumed?
Just like distance = speed x time, electricity consumed = number of watts x time. It is most usually represented in Killo Watt Hour or KWHs which in daily language is called as “Unit” of electricity as you see on your electricity bills.
The electricity meter in your house shows the “Units” of electricity used or KWH of electricity used.
How can you calculate electricity consumption of any appliance?
This formula shall work in many appliances. But then there are some appliances for which it may not work. For e.g. Wattage mentioned on an air conditioner is the value of wattage when the compressor as well as the fan is on. But air conditioners have thermostat that switches off the compressor when a desired temperature is achieved. And it gets switched on again when temperature increases. Similarly appliances like geyser, electric iron, refrigerator, have thermostats. So the calculation of wattage is not as straight forward for all appliances.
Next, what is voltage?
Just like water flows from one point to another when there is a difference in the heights of the two points, electricity flows between two points only when there is a voltage difference.
Standard voltage in India for a single phase connection is 230 V and three phase is 415V
This brings us to the next term: Ampere
As we mentioned, when there is a voltage difference, electricity flows between two points. This flow of electricity is measured in Ampere. Ampere is rate of flow of electricity.
That is why when you have to buy a wire for your house, you should go for a thicker wire when value of ampere required is high, and thinner wire when value of ampere required is low.
How is wattage related to Volt and Ampere?
Wattage of appliance is directly related to voltage and ampere. The formula is
Wattage = power factor * voltage * ampere
In a residential connection the value of power factor is quite close to “1”. Now as the voltage is constant (230 V) the number of amperes is more if the wattage is more. That is why you need think wires for an AC.

Meanwhile, a French physicist named André-Marie Ampère was experimenting with some wires, trying to learn more about the connection between currents and the magnetic fields they create. A conexão entre os dois fenômenos "magnetismo" e "eletricidade” foi feita com sucesso somente no início do século XIX pelo cientista André Marie Ampère.
Ele acreditava ser possível gerar atração mútua sem ímãs, através da força exercida pelo fluxo de corrente elétrica nos fios. Para demonstrar a essas forças, Ampère desenvolveu a “balança de corrente”. Dependendo do fluxo da corrente, dois condutores se atraem ou repelem como dois imãs. Este experimento destina-se a provar da veracidade da teoria de Ampère. André-Marie Ampère fundou a eletrodinâmica com sua pesquisa. Por sugestão do físico alemão Helmholtz, em 1881 a unidade de corrente passou a ser chamada de “ampere” (A) em memória das grandes conquistas deste cientista.

The ampere (SI unit symbol: A), often shortened to "amp", is the SI unit of electric current (dimension symbol: I) and is one of the sevenSI base units. It is named after André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836), French mathematician and physicist, considered the father of electrodynamics.
The ampere is equivalent to one coulomb (roughly 7018624100000000000♠6.241×1018 times the elementary charge) per second. Amperes are used to express flow rate of electric charge. For any point experiencing a current, if the number of charged particles passing through it — or the charge on the particles passing through it — is increased, the amperes of current at that point will proportionately increase.
The ampere should not be confused with the coulomb (also called "ampere-second") or the ampere-hour (A⋅h). The ampere is a unit of current, the amount of charge transiting per unit time, and the coulomb is a unit of charge. When SI units are used, constant, instantaneous and average current are expressed in amperes (as in "the charging current is 1.2 A") and the charge accumulated, or passed through a circuit over a period of time is expressed in coulombs (as in "the battery charge is 7004300000000000000♠30000 C"). The relation of the ampere to the coulomb is the same as that of the watt to the joule, and that of metre per second to metre.

Crash Course
Crash Course (also known as Driving Academy) is a 1988 made for television teen film directed by Oz Scott.
Plot
Crash Course centers on a group of high schoolers in a driver’s education class; many for the second or third time. The recently divorced teacher, super-passive Larry Pearl, is on thin ice with the football fanatic principal, Principal Paulson, who is being pressured by the district superintendent to raise driver’s education completion rates or lose his coveted football program. With this in mind, Principal Paulson and his assistant, with a secret desire for his job, Abner Frasier, hire an outside driver’s education instructor with a very tough reputation, Edna Savage, aka E.W. Savage, who quickly takes control of the class.
The plot focuses mostly on the students and their interactions with their teachers and each other. In the beginning, Rico is the loner with just a few friends, Chadley is the bookish nerd with few friends who longs to be cool and also longs to be a part of Vanessa’s life who is the young, friendly and attractive girl who had to fake her mother’s signature on her driver’s education permission slip. Kichi is the hip-hop Asian kid who often raps what he has to say and constantly flirts with Maria, the rich foreign girl who thinks that the right-of-way on the roadways always goes to (insert awesomely fake foreign Latino accent) “my father’s limo”. Finally you have stereotypical football meathead J.J., who needs to pass his English exam to keep his eligibility and constantly asks out and gets rejected by Alice, the tomboy whose father owns “Santini & Son” Concrete Company. Alice is portrayed as being the “son” her father wanted.

There are various terms that people use while talking about electricity in your regular conversations, but many a times you do not know what each of these mean or how they impact you. With this video we will try to explain some basic terms that you use, but might not be aware of the exact meaning of the same. Firstly, what is wattage? A conexão entre os dois fenômenos "magnetismo" e "eletricidade” foi feita com sucesso somente no início do século XIX pelo cientista André Marie Ampère. Ele acreditava ser possível gerar atração mútua sem ímãs, através da força exercida pelo fluxo de corrente elétrica nos fios. Para demonstrar a essas forças, Ampère desenvolveu a “balança de corrente”. Dependendo do fluxo da corrente, dois condutores se atraem ou repelem como dois imãs. Este experimento destina-se a provar da veracidade da teoria de Ampère. André-Marie Ampère fundou a eletrodinâmica com sua pesquisa. There are various terms that people use while talking about electricity in your regular conversations, but many a times you do not know what each of these mean or how they impact you.
With this video we will try to explain some basic terms that you use, but might not be aware of the exact meaning of the same.
Firstly, what is wattage?
While buying appliances, many a time you might look at their wattage. For e.g. you may go for a 14 W CFL, or 3KW geyser. But what exactly is watts?
Watts is the rate of electricity consumption, just like speed is the rate of distance traveled. As speed is not always equal to the actual distance traveled, watts does not mean actual electricity consumed. The actual number will depend on the time for which it is used.
please note, just like all other units of measurement, 1 Kilo watt = 1000 Watts.
Next you may think: Then what is the unit of Electricity Consumed?
Just like distance = speed x time, electricity consumed = number of watts x time. It is most usually represented in Killo Watt Hour or KWHs which in daily language is called as “Unit” of electricity as you see on your electricity bills.
The electricity meter in your house shows the “Units” of electricity used or KWH of electricity used.
How can you calculate electricity consumption of any appliance?
This formula shall work in many appliances. But then there are some appliances for which it may not work. For e.g. Wattage mentioned on an air conditioner is the value of wattage when the compressor as well as the fan is on. But air conditioners have thermostat that switches off the compressor when a desired temperature is achieved. And it gets switched on again when temperature increases. Similarly appliances like geyser, electric iron, refrigerator, have thermostats. So the calculation of wattage is not as straight forward for all appliances.
Next, what is voltage?
Just like water flows from one point to another when there is a difference in the heights of the two points, electricity flows between two points only when there is a voltage difference.
Standard voltage in India for a single phase connection is 230 V and three phase is 415V
This brings us to the next term: Ampere
As we mentioned, when there is a voltage difference, electricity flows between two points. This flow of electricity is measured in Ampere. Ampere is rate of flow of electricity.
That is why when you have to buy a wire for your house, you should go for a thicker wire when value of ampere required is high, and thinner wire when value of ampere required is low.
How is wattage related to Volt and Ampere?
Wattage of appliance is directly related to voltage and ampere. The formula is
Wattage = power factor * voltage * ampere
In a residential connection the value of power factor is quite close to “1”. Now as the voltage is constant (230 V) the number of amperes is more if the wattage is more. That is why you need think wires for an AC.
