This film is generally regarded as one of David Lean's less successful directorial attempts, but not by me. It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Of all styles of murder - strangulation, shooting, stabbing, drowning or any other means, poison is the most cowardly and deceitful, being pre-planned with cunning and much malice-aforethought, and that's exactly what Madeleine Smith appeared the have been guilty of.
Having been seduced by a penniless clerk from Jersey called Pierre Emile L'Angelier, she entered into a serious affair which inevitably came to the ears of her strictly conventional Papa. He warned her off the man in no mean terms, this being 1857 when conformity and propriety were the most important protocols of the day. A more socially suitable suitor was found next door by her father, and she decided the end her affair with L'Angelier,. This wasn't to his liking and he persisted in a continuation, which Madeleine apparently went along with, but soon the young man became ill with vomiting and stomach pains and eventually, after he died, it was discovered he had been poisoned with arsenic. Madeleine was tried in a notorious case and found ‘Not Proven' - a verdict that only happened in Scotland when a jury could not come to a definite conclusion on a specific case - so she became free, though always with suspicion surrounding her future life. In 1861, after leaving Scotland, Madeleine married an artist named George Wardell but they separated in 1889 when she went to New York, married a second time and died in 1928, ten years after the death of her second husband.
Supporting members of the cast are Ivan Desny, making his British debut as L'Angelier, Norman Wooland as William Minnoch, the ‘suitable' suitor, Leslie Banks and Barbara Everest as Madeleine's parents, Elizabeth Sellars as Christina, the maid who let L'Angelier into the basement for meetings with Madeleine. Andre Morell, Dean of Falcuty, and Barry Jones, Lord Advocate, are in the Court. Edward Chapman, Jean Cadell, Eugene Deckers, Kynaston Reeves, Irene Brown have roles in the cast, and, yes, Amy Veness, once again! There are also several uncredited names that are well-known: Eva Bartok, John Laurie, Albert Chevalier, Wyllie Watson, Molly Weir and Anthony Newley amongst them... The film contains another tremendous score by William Alwyn, who added to the atmosphere of so many British movies - one of the best, in my opinion was "Odd Man Out", but others were "Great Day" (also on this channel). "Green for Danger", "The Winslow Boy", "The Fallen Idol" and "The History of Mr Polly" amongst so many more...
The most well-known summary of the famous case of Madeleine Smith was written by F Tennyson Jesse in 1927 and published in the Notable British Trials series.

Unfortunately this is the only print of this film that I can find and throughout the focus appears to constantly fluctuate, which makes viewing somewhat unpleasant, but I found the movie so enthralling that I soon forgot the dire state of the print when watching it and for that reason I decided to post it here, with the hope that others might get past the quality of the print to the quality of the film itself, though many viewers, I'm sure, will switch off after a few minutes. However, this is an unusual court-room drama dominated by a towering performance from an unrecognisable Michael Redgrave under massive beard and moustache. Ann Todd adds her usual competent but slightly cool performance as Keiron Moore's wife, and he himself is throughly convincing as a blind, deaf, mute man accused of murder. Other notables giving excellent performances are Leo Genn, as Father Rodelec, Michael Medwin, Anthony Nicholls, and Phil Brown (who some viewers may remember from "Obsession") playing the murder victim in flashback. Jane Griffiths is charming as ‘Danielle', Redgrave's assistant, and the cast also includes Richard O'Sullivan as Moore's character in childhood, and Terence Alexander...
The Story: A body is found in a ship's cabin with a mute, deaf and blind man (Moore) also in the room, literally with blood on his hands. The man, a famous writer, despite his disabilities, confesses to killing the man and refuses to move from that position. His defence lawyer (Redgrave) searches for his wife (Todd), separated for five years, and the green scarf she wears that her husband loves, proves to be a crucial piece of evidence when through tortuous research he discovers why the man has so desperately stuck to his guilty plea, and in a final dramatic court scene exposes the real culprit. Redgrave's summing-up speech is up there with Orson Welles' performance in "Compulsion" and Charles Laughton's in "Witness for the Prosecution"...
The film highlights interesting differences between French and British courtroom procedure, particularly in the allowance of court photographers and lawyers permitted to interact between themselves during examination and there are also many flashbacks, needed, not only to explain the story, but also to relieve the heavy overtones of the courtroom scenes. This rare 1954 movie is directed with skill by George More O'Ferrall, who produced many films in the 30s and 40s and also directed "The Holly and the Ivy", "The Woman for Joe" and others before moving into TV in the 1960s. The script by Gordon Wellesley is based on a French novel called "The Brute" by Guy des Cars.
I am unaware of how the film was received in the UK but Bosley Crowther finished his review in the New York Times with "The Green Scarf is a mottled and unconvincing thing." Nevertheless a reviewer on Imdb has it as "One of the Great Courtroom Dramas on film" - so perhaps if you managed to get past the state of the print and reached the end of the film, you might agree with his comment! I certainly do!

This rare film is unusual and interesting. Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired, and the seedy atmosphere of the docks is conveyed very convincingly. Nice turns, also, by Edward Rigby and Bill Owen. Directed by Compton Bennett, who had already directed Todd for her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", and a superb, doom-laden score by Benjamin Frankel who wrote many film scores including 'Mine Own Executioner', 'London Belongs to Me', ‘So Long at the Fair'. ‘The Clouded Yellow', 'Kid for Two Farthings' and 'Footsteps in the Fog'...

This "B" mystery and horror movie gets mixed reviews from fans today, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Truthfully, you have to get past the initial introduction of train passengers which takes about 15 minutes to achieve. However, once they get stranded at the dark, secluded train depot, interesting, spellbinding events start to occur.

Ann Todd
Dorothy Anne Todd (24 January 1909 – 6 May 1993) was an English actress and producer.
Early years
Todd was born in Hartford, Cheshire, England, and educated at St. Winifrid's School, Eastbourne, Sussex.
Film
Todd became a popular actress by appearing in such films as Perfect Strangers (1945) (as a nurse) and The Seventh Veil (1945) (as a troubled concert pianist). She is perhaps best known to American audiences as Gregory Peck's long-suffering wife in Alfred Hitchcock's The Paradine Case (1947).
In 1946, Todd was said to be the "holder of the most lucrative contract ever signed by an English cinema actress, with over a million dollars involved in its clauses."
Television
Todd starred in two episodes of Playhouse 90: Not the Glory and The Grey Nurse Said Nothing.
Stage
In 1957, Todd starred in the Broadway production of Four Winds.
Autobiography
She later produced a series of travel films. Her autobiography is entitled The Eighth Veil, an allusion to the film which made her a star in Britain. Todd was known as the "pocket Garbo" for her diminutive, blonde beauty.

This "B" mystery and horror movie gets mixed reviews from fans today, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Truthfully, you have to get past the initial introduction of train passengers which takes about 15 minutes to achieve. However, once they get stranded at the dark, secluded train depot, interesting, spellbinding events start to occur.

This film is generally regarded as one of David Lean's less successful directorial attempts, but not by me. It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Of all styles of murder - strangulation, shooting, stabbing, drowning or any other means, poison is the most cowardly and deceitful, being pre-planned with cunning and much malice-aforethought, and that's exactly what Madeleine Smith appeared the have been guilty of.
Having been seduced by a penniless clerk from Jersey called Pierre Emile L'Angelier, she entered into a serious affair which inevitably came to the ears of her strictly conventional Papa. He warned her off the man in no mean terms, this being 1857 when conformity and propriety were the most important protocols of the day. A more socially suitable suitor was found next door by her father, and she decided the end her affair with L'Angelier,. This wasn't to his liking and he persisted in a continuation, which Madeleine apparently went along with, but soon the young man became ill with vomiting and stomach pains and eventually, after he died, it was discovered he had been poisoned with arsenic. Madeleine was tried in a notorious case and found ‘Not Proven' - a verdict that only happened in Scotland when a jury could not come to a definite conclusion on a specific case - so she became free, though always with suspicion surrounding her future life. In 1861, after leaving Scotland, Madeleine married an artist named George Wardell but they separated in 1889 when she went to New York, married a second time and died in 1928, ten years after the death of her second husband.
Supporting members of the cast are Ivan Desny, making his British debut as L'Angelier, Norman Wooland as William Minnoch, the ‘suitable' suitor, Leslie Banks and Barbara Everest as Madeleine's parents, Elizabeth Sellars as Christina, the maid who let L'Angelier into the basement for meetings with Madeleine. Andre Morell, Dean of Falcuty, and Barry Jones, Lord Advocate, are in the Court. Edward Chapman, Jean Cadell, Eugene Deckers, Kynaston Reeves, Irene Brown have roles in the cast, and, yes, Amy Veness, once again! There are also several uncredited names that are well-known: Eva Bartok, John Laurie, Albert Chevalier, Wyllie Watson, Molly Weir and Anthony Newley amongst them... The film contains another tremendous score by William Alwyn, who added to the atmosphere of so many British movies - one of the best, in my opinion was "Odd Man Out", but others were "Great Day" (also on this channel). "Green for Danger", "The Winslow Boy", "The Fallen Idol" and "The History of Mr Polly" amongst so many more...

Unfortunately this is the only print of this film that I can find and throughout the focus appears to constantly fluctuate, which makes viewing somewhat unpleasant, but I found the movie so enthralling that I soon forgot the dire state of the print when watching it and for that reason I decided to post it here, with the hope that others might get past the quality of the print to the quality of the film itself, though many viewers, I'm sure, will switch off after a few minutes. However, this is an unusual court-room drama dominated by a towering performance from an unrecognisable Michael Redgrave under massive beard and moustache. Ann Todd adds her usual competent but slightly cool performance as Keiron Moore's wife, and he himself is throughly convincing as a blind, deaf, mute man accused of murder. Other notables giving excellent performances are Leo Genn, as Father Rodelec, Michael Medwin, Anthony Nicholls, and Phil Brown (who some viewers may remember from "Obsession") playing the murder victim in flashback. Jane Griffiths is charming as ‘Danielle', Redgrave's assistant, and the cast also includes Richard O'Sullivan as Moore's character in childhood, and Terence Alexander...
The Story: A body is found in a ship's cabin with a mute, deaf and blind man (Moore) also in the room, literally with blood on his hands. The man, a famous writer, despite his disabilities, confesses to killing the man and refuses to move from that position. His defence lawyer (Redgrave) searches for his wife (Todd), separated for five years, and the green scarf she wears that her husband loves, proves to be a crucial piece of evidence when through tortuous research he discovers why the man has so desperately stuck to his guilty plea, and in a final dramatic court scene exposes the real culprit. Redgrave's summing-up speech is up there with Orson Welles' performance in "Compulsion" and Charles Laughton's in "Witness for the Prosecution"...
The film highlights interesting differences between French and British courtroom procedure, particularly in the allowance of court photographers and lawyers permitted to interact between themselves during examination and there are also many flashbacks, needed, not only to explain the story, but also to relieve the heavy overtones of the courtroom scenes. This rare 1954 movie is directed with skill by George More O'Ferrall, who produced many films in the 30s and 40s and also directed "The Holly and the Ivy", "The Woman for Joe" and others before moving into TV in the 1960s. The script by Gordon Wellesley is based on a French novel called "The Brute" by Guy des Cars.
I am unaware of how the film was received in the UK but Bosley Crowther finished his review in the New York Times with "The Green Scarf is a mottled and unconvincing thing." Nevertheless a reviewer on Imdb has it as "One of the Great Courtroom Dramas on film" - so perhaps if you managed to get past the state of the print and reached the end of the film, you might agree with his comment! I certainly do!

Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired, and the seedy atmosphere of the docks is conveyed very convincingly. Nice turns, also, by Edward Rigby and Bill Owen. Directed by Compton Bennett, who had already directed Todd for her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", and a superb, doom-laden score by Benjamin Frankel who wrote many film scores including 'Mine Own Executioner', 'London Belongs to Me', ‘So Long at the Fair'. ‘The Clouded Yellow', 'Kid for Two Farthings' and 'Footsteps in the Fog'...

This film is generally regarded as one of David Lean's less successful directorial attempts, but not by me. It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Unfortunately this is the only print of this film that I can find and throughout the focus appears to constantly fluctuate, which makes viewing somewhat unpleasant, but I found the movie so enthralling that I soon forgot the dire state of the print when watching it and for that reason I decided to post it here, with the hope that others might get past the quality of the print to the quality of the film itself, though many viewers, I'm sure, will switch off after a few minutes. However, this is an unusual court-room drama dominated by a towering performance from an unrecognisable Michael Redgrave under massive beard and moustache. Ann Todd adds her usual competent but slightly cool performance as Keiron Moore's wife, and he himself is throughly convincing as a blind, deaf, mute man accused of murder. Other notables giving excellent performances are Leo Genn, as Father Rodelec, Michael Medwin, Anthony Nicholls, and Phil Brown (who some viewers may remember from "Obsession") playing the murder victim in flashback. Jane Griffiths is charming as ‘Danielle', Redgrave's assistant, and the cast also includes Richard O'Sullivan as Moore's character in childhood, and Terence Alexander...
The Story: A body is found in a ship's cabin with a mute, deaf and blind man (Moore) also in the room, literally with blood on his hands. The man, a famous writer, despite his disabilities, confesses to killing the man and refuses to move from that position. His defence lawyer (Redgrave) searches for his wife (Todd), separated for five years, and the green scarf she wears that her husband loves, proves to be a crucial piece of evidence when through tortuous research he discovers why the man has so desperately stuck to his guilty plea, and in a final dramatic court scene exposes the real culprit. Redgrave's summing-up speech is up there with Orson Welles' performance in "Compulsion" and Charles Laughton's in "Witness for the Prosecution"...
The film highlights interesting differences between French and British courtroom procedure, particularly in the allowance of court photographers and lawyers permitted to interact between themselves during examination and there are also many flashbacks, needed, not only to explain the story, but also to relieve the heavy overtones of the courtroom scenes. This rare 1954 movie is directed with skill by George More O'Ferrall, who produced many films in the 30s and 40s and also directed "The Holly and the Ivy", "The Woman for Joe" and others before moving into TV in the 1960s. The script by Gordon Wellesley is based on a French novel called "The Brute" by Guy des Cars.
I am unaware of how the film was received in the UK but Bosley Crowther finished his review in the New York Times with "The Green Scarf is a mottled and unconvincing thing." Nevertheless a reviewer on Imdb has it as "One of the Great Courtroom Dramas on film" - so perhaps if you managed to get past the state of the print and reached the end of the film, you might agree with his comment! I certainly do!

This rare film is unusual and interesting. Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired, and the seedy atmosphere of the docks is conveyed very convincingly. Nice turns, also, by Edward Rigby and Bill Owen. Directed by Compton Bennett, who had already directed Todd for her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", and a superb, doom-laden score by Benjamin Frankel who wrote many film scores including 'Mine Own Executioner', 'London Belongs to Me', ‘So Long at the Fair'. ‘The Clouded Yellow', 'Kid for Two Farthings' and 'Footsteps in the Fog'...

This film is generally regarded as one of David Lean's less successful directorial attempts, but not by me. It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Of all styles of murder - strangulation, shooting, stabbing, drowning or any other means, poison is the most cowardly and deceitful, being pre-planned with cunning and much malice-aforethought, and that's exactly what Madeleine Smith appeared the have been guilty of. ...

Unfortunately this is the only print of this film that I can find and throughout the focus appears to constantly fluctuate, which makes viewing somewhat unpleasant, but I found the movie so enthralling that I soon forgot the dire state of the print when watching it and for that reason I decided to post it here, with the hope that others might get past the quality of the print to the quality of the film itself, though many viewers, I'm sure, will switch off after a few minutes. However, this is an unusual court-room drama dominated by a towering performance from an unrecognisable Michael Redgrave under massive beard and moustache. Ann Todd adds her usual competent but slightly cool performance as Keiron Moore's wife, and he himself is throughly convincing as a blind, deaf, mute man accused ...

This rare film is unusual and interesting. Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired,...

This "B" mystery and horror movie gets mixed reviews from fans today, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Truthfully, you have to get past the initial introduction of train passengers which takes about 15 minutes to achieve. However, once they get stranded at the dark, secluded train depot, interesting, spellbinding events start to occur.

It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Of all styles of murder - strangulation, shooting, stabbing, drowning or any other means, poison is the most cowardly and deceitful, being pre-planned with cunning and much malice-aforethought, and that's exactly what Madeleine Smith appeared the have been guilty of.
Having been seduced by a penniless clerk from Jersey called Pierre Emile L'Angelier, she entered into a serious affair which inevitably came to the ears of her strictly conventional Papa. He warned her off the man in no mean terms, this being 1857 when conformity and propriety were the most important protocols of the day. A more socially suitable suitor was found next door by her father, and she decided the end her affair with L'Angelier,. This wasn't to his liking and he persisted in a continuation, which Madeleine apparently went along with, but soon the young man became ill with vomiting and stomach pains and eventually, after he died, it was discovered he had been poisoned with arsenic. Madeleine was tried in a notorious case and found ‘Not Proven' - a verdict that only happened in Scotland when a jury could not come to a definite conclusion on a specific case - so she became free, though always with suspicion surrounding her future life. In 1861, after leaving Scotland, Madeleine married an artist named George Wardell but they separated in 1889 when she went to New York, married a second time and died in 1928, ten years after the death of her second husband.
Supporting members of the cast are Ivan Desny, making his British debut as L'Angelier, Norman Wooland as William Minnoch, the ‘suitable' suitor, Leslie Banks and Barbara Everest as Madeleine's parents, Elizabeth Sellars as Christina, the maid who let L'Angelier into the basement for meetings with Madeleine. Andre Morell, Dean of Falcuty, and Barry Jones, Lord Advocate, are in the Court. Edward Chapman, Jean Cadell, Eugene Deckers, Kynaston Reeves, Irene Brown have roles in the cast, and, yes, Amy Veness, once again! There are also several uncredited names that are well-known: Eva Bartok, John Laurie, Albert Chevalier, Wyllie Watson, Molly Weir and Anthony Newley amongst them... The film contains another tremendous score by William Alwyn, who added to the atmosphere of so many British movies - one of the best, in my opinion was "Odd Man Out", but others were "Great Day" (also on this channel). "Green for Danger", "The Winslow Boy", "The Fallen Idol" and "The History of Mr Polly" amongst so many more...

Other notables giving excellent performances are Leo Genn, as Father Rodelec, Michael Medwin, Anthony Nicholls, and Phil Brown (who some viewers may remember from "Obsession") playing the murder victim in flashback. Jane Griffiths is charming as ‘Danielle', Redgrave's assistant, and the cast also includes Richard O'Sullivan as Moore's character in childhood, and Terence Alexander...
The Story: A body is found in a ship's cabin with a mute, deaf and blind man (Moore) also in the room, literally with blood on his hands. The man, a famous writer, despite his disabilities, confesses to killing the man and refuses to move from that position. His defence lawyer (Redgrave) searches for his wife (Todd), separated for five years, and the green scarf she wears that her husband loves, proves to be a crucial piece of evidence when through tortuous research he discovers why the man has so desperately stuck to his guilty plea, and in a final dramatic court scene exposes the real culprit. Redgrave's summing-up speech is up there with Orson Welles' performance in "Compulsion" and Charles Laughton's in "Witness for the Prosecution"...
The film highlights interesting differences between French and British courtroom procedure, particularly in the allowance of court photographers and lawyers permitted to interact between themselves during examination and there are also many flashbacks, needed, not only to explain the story, but also to relieve the heavy overtones of the courtroom scenes. This rare 1954 movie is directed with skill by George More O'Ferrall, who produced many films in the 30s and 40s and also directed "The Holly and the Ivy", "The Woman for Joe" and others before moving into TV in the 1960s. The script by Gordon Wellesley is based on a French novel called "The Brute" by Guy des Cars.
I am unaware of how the film was received in the UK but Bosley Crowther finished his review in the New York Times with "The Green Scarf is a mottled and unconvincing thing." Nevertheless a reviewer on Imdb has it as "One of the Great Courtroom Dramas on film" - so perhaps if you managed to get past the state of the print and reached the end of the film, you might agree with his comment! I certainly do!

The Story: A body is found in a ship's cabin with a mute, deaf and blind man (Moore) also in the room, literally with blood on his hands. The man, a famous writer, despite his disabilities, confesses to killing the man and refuses to move from that position. His defence lawyer (Redgrave) searches for his wife (Todd), separated for five years, and the green scarf she wears that her husband loves, proves to be a crucial piece of evidence when through tortuous research he discovers why the man has so desperately stuck to his guilty plea, and in a final dramatic court scene exposes the real culprit. Redgrave's summing-up speech is up there with Orson Welles' performance in "Compulsion" and Charles Laughton's in "Witness for the Prosecution"...
The film highlights interesting differences between French and British courtroom procedure, particularly in the allowance of court photographers and lawyers permitted to interact between themselves during examination and there are also many flashbacks, needed, not only to explain the story, but also to relieve the heavy overtones of the courtroom scenes. This rare 1954 movie is directed with skill by George More O'Ferrall, who produced many films in the 30s and 40s and also directed "The Holly and the Ivy", "The Woman for Joe" and others before moving into TV in the 1960s. The script by Gordon Wellesley is based on a French novel called "The Brute" by Guy des Cars.
I am unaware of how the film was received in the UK but Bosley Crowther finished his review in the New York Times with "The Green Scarf is a mottled and unconvincing thing." Nevertheless a reviewer on Imdb has it as "One of the Great Courtroom Dramas on film" - so perhaps if you managed to get past the state of the print and reached the end of the film, you might agree with his comment! I certainly do!

Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired, and the seedy atmosphere of the docks is conveyed very convincingly. Nice turns, also, by Edward Rigby and Bill Owen. It is a tightly controlled black and white telling of the true story of Madeleine Smith, a young lady living with her family in the house, which still stands, on the corner of Blythswood Square in mid 1850s Glasgow, and although Ann Todd (Mrs Lean at the time) was certainly too old at 40 to be playing a twenty-one year old, her iceberg coolness was perfect for the calculating poisoner that Madeleine was thought to be. Of all styles of murder - strangulation, shooting, stabbing, drowning or any other means, poison is the most cowardly and deceitful, being pre-planned with cunning and much malice-aforethought, and that's exactly what Madeleine Smith appeared the have been guilty of. ...

Unfortunately this is the only print of this film that I can find and throughout the focus appears to constantly fluctuate, which makes viewing somewhat unpleasant, but I found the movie so enthralling that I soon forgot the dire state of the print when watching it and for that reason I decided to post it here, with the hope that others might get past the quality of the print to the quality of the film itself, though many viewers, I'm sure, will switch off after a few minutes. However, this is an unusual court-room drama dominated by a towering performance from an unrecognisable Michael Redgrave under massive beard and moustache. Ann Todd adds her usual competent but slightly cool performance as Keiron Moore's wife, and he himself is throughly convincing as a blind, deaf, mute man accused ...

Having been seduced by a penniless clerk from Jersey called Pierre Emile L'Angelier, she entered into a serious affair which inevitably came to the ears of her strictly conventional Papa. He warned her off the man in no mean terms, this being 1857 when conformity and propriety were the most important protocols of the day. A more socially suitable suitor was found next door by her father, and she decided the end her affair with L'Angelier,. This wasn't to his liking and he persisted in a continuation, which Madeleine apparently went along with, but soon the young man became ill with vomiting and stomach pains and eventually, after he died, it was discovered he had been poisoned with arsenic. Madeleine was tried in a notorious case and found ‘Not Proven' - a verdict that only happened in Scotland when a jury could not come to a definite conclusion on a specific case - so she became free, though always with suspicion surrounding her future life. In 1861, after leaving Scotland, Madeleine married an artist named George Wardell but they separated in 1889 when she went to New York, married a second time and died in 1928, ten years after the death of her second husband.
Supporting members of the cast are Ivan Desny, making his British debut as L'Angelier, Norman Wooland as William Minnoch, the ‘suitable' suitor, Leslie Banks and Barbara Everest as Madeleine's parents, Elizabeth Sellars as Christina, the maid who let L'Angelier into the basement for meetings with Madeleine. Andre Morell, Dean of Falcuty, and Barry Jones, Lord Advocate, are in the Court. Edward Chapman, Jean Cadell, Eugene Deckers, Kynaston Reeves, Irene Brown have roles in the cast, and, yes, Amy Veness, once again! There are also several uncredited names that are well-known: Eva Bartok, John Laurie, Albert Chevalier, Wyllie Watson, Molly Weir and Anthony Newley amongst them... The film contains another tremendous score by William Alwyn, who added to the atmosphere of so many British movies - one of the best, in my opinion was "Odd Man Out", but others were "Great Day" (also on this channel). This rare film is unusual and interesting. Filmed in 1946 it wasn't released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on today's viewing one can only wonder what they found in it to condemn, though it may have been considered inappropriate to have Portman's character be a hangman. Eric Portman gives his usual brisk, clipped performance and Ann Todd has an adequate stab at a more ordinary accent than is usual for her. This was an extraordinary choice of subject to follow up her huge success in "The Seventh Veil", the subject matter being very low-key and not at all universal in appeal. However, the very unusualness makes the film particularly interesting. Maxwell Reed also give one of his better performances though his Scandinavian accent leaves a lot to be desired, and the seedy atmosphere of the docks is conveyed very convincingly. Nice turns, also, by Edward Rigby and Bill Owen. Truthfully, you have to get past the initial introduction of train passengers which takes about 15 minutes to achieve. However, once they get stranded at the dark, secluded train depot, interesting, spellbinding events start to occur.
