The ASL LP Discography

Very little has been written so far on the history of the ASL recording studio and label in Nairobi. By examining the labels of various ASL singles, we can surmise at least some of the transition points in the label's history. We see that in August, 1965, ASL's Winner imprint released Hamba Hamba Twist by Jim Lasco as WIN 7-41, matrix number AS 101 (perhaps their 101st side recorded at ASL?). The second label example is of a 78rpm record by Franco and OK Jazz, ASL.535 which would appear to be about the same time as the Winner release. Notice that on the Winner single, the ASL logo is in the shape of an ellipse. This would appear to be related to the to the distended semicircle segment of ASL.535 (the second graphic). Of note, the dust jacket (graphic 3) retained that logo throughout the history of ASL 45rpms. However, look at ASL.699, which came out in or after 1966. The ASL logo seems to be a transitional design in the shape of a trisected circle segment. The "S" is much fuller and it is not much of a stretch literally, to get to the ASL logo design that became the iconic fixture on all ASL records for the next 25 years: the "S" intertwined and sandwiched in between the joined "A" and "L" letters.

It's not clear whether the ownership of ASL was based in Kenya or outside the country. Notes from the reseller of ASL.699 say it was pressed in South Africa though I don't see any indication of that on the label. It does have the strange quirk of saying SINGLE PLAY 45 (on the 78rpm) in the exact location where MICRO GROOVE 45 later became a fixture, though without the 45, on all ASL labels including the 33rpms.

In addition to the primary ASL imprint and Winner, African Beat was another ASL imprint which in its early catalog featured bands from Tanzania. African Beat was part of ASL up to 1968 but by 1969 the disc labels show Phonogram, the parent company of Philips, taking over the imprint. When international record companies Philips and Polydor came to Kenya around 1967, they apparently did not have in-house recording studios. They licensed recordings made by Assanand & Sons, Mombasa and they used the studios of Associated Sound (East Africa) Ltd. Both Philips and Polydor credit many of their early recordings to ASL and use ASL matrix numbers. At some point between 1969 and certainly by 1972, ASL was acquired by Phonogram but that date isn't clear from the disc labels. The ASL imprint retained the name Associated Sound (East Africa) Ltd. on each single up to 1972 when the name Phonogram replaced it. That same year, Phonogram and Polydor merged to form Polygram and the Philips imprint was retired from Kenya except for foreign artists from outside Africa. ASL continued to put the Phonogram name on discs up to around 1978 when the Phonogram name was replaced by PolyGram.

The ASL imprint specialized in Congolese music, most of it licensed from foreign producers, but with some local recordings of Congolese groups. Much of catalog came from Zaire (now D.R. Congo) or expatriat Congolese musicians. Discographies of ASL's 45rpm singles can be found on Tim Clifford's kentanzavinyl.com, with an extensive listing of ASL, Winner, and African Beat singles. In 1976, ASL began releasing an LP series, with the starting catalog number ASLP 901. A second series began in 1984 with ASLP 401. What we have below is a first attempt at a discography for ASL 33 1/3 rpm long playing records as exemplified in the graphics below.
