Makassar

Makassar (Buginese-Makassar language: ᨀᨚᨈ ᨆᨀᨔᨑ) – sometimes spelled Macassar, Mangkasara' – is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is the largest city on Sulawesi Island in terms of population, and the fifth largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Medan. From 1971 to 1999, the city was named Ujung Pandang, after a precolonial fort in the city, and the two names are often used interchangeably. The city is located on the southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait.

The city's area is 19,926 square kilometres (7,693 sq mi) and it had a population of around 1.6 million in 2013. Its built-up (or metro) area had 1,976,168 inhabitants covering Makassar City and 15 districts. Its official metropolitan area, known as Mamminasata, with 17 additional districts, covers an area of 2,548 square kilometres (984 sq mi) and had a population of around 2.4 million at the 2010 Census.

History

Beginning in the sixteenth century, Makassar was the dominant trading center of eastern Indonesia, and soon became one of the largest cities in island Southeast Asia. The Makassar kings maintained a policy of free trade, insisting on the right of any visitor to do business in the city, and rejecting the attempts of the Dutch to establish a monopoly.

South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi (Indonesian: Sulawesi Selatan) is a province in the southern peninsula of Sulawesi. The Selayar Islands archipelago is also part of the province.

The 2010 census estimated the population as 8,032,551 which makes South Sulawesi the most populous province on the island (46% of the population of Sulawesi is in South Sulawesi), and the sixth most populous province in Indonesia.

Geography

South Sulawesi is located at 4°20'S 120°15'E and covers an area of 45,764.53 square kilometres. The province is bordered by Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi to the north, the Gulf of Bone and Southeast Sulawesi to the east, Makassar Strait to the west, and Flores Sea to the south.

Administrative divisions

Five years after independence, the government issued Law No. 21 of 1950, which became the basis of the legal establishment for the Sulawesi province. Ten years later, the government passed Law No. 47 of 1960 which endorsed the formation of the South/Southeast Sulawesi province. Four years after that, with Act No. 13 of 1964, the provinces of South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi were separated.

Coto Makassar

Coto Makassar or Coto Mangkasara (Makassarese), is an Indonesian dish originating from Makassar, South Sulawesi. It is a stew with seasoning broth made from ground peanuts. The main ingredient of this soup is beef and it can be mixed with innards such as intestine, liver, lungs, heart, tripe, or cow brain.

Coto Makassar is usually served with Burasa or Ketupat.

The Food Channel

The Food Channel (not affiliated with Food Network) is a consumer Web site with food recipes, news, reviews and advice. The site compiles information to produce food industry trends and aims to be a gateway for all things food.

Site content is separated into four categories: recipes, articles, blogs and videos. Recipes are created by The Food Channel chefs, as well as recipes from featured cookbooks. Content for the site is generated by a team of editors and the chefs of The Food Channel. Food bloggers also contribute content to the site.

History

The Food Channel began as a newsletter in the 1980s. It predicted and reported trends in the food industry. The newsletter was published 23 times per year by Noble Communications (formerly Noble and Associates).

The Web site was launched on January 21, 2008 by Noble Communications under the direction of CEO, Bob Noble. Headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, the site was in Beta version for about one year, in which time new site features were tested and added. On January 22, 2009, the Web site finished Beta testing.
