The Collective (band)

The Collective were an Australian boy band consisting of members Trent Bell, Julian De Vizio, Zach Russell, Jayden Sierra and Will Singe. They were formed during the fourth season of The X Factor Australia in 2012 and finished in third place. The Collective subsequently signed with Sony Music Australia and released their debut single "Surrender", which debuted at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart. The group's self-titled album, The Collective, was released in December 2012 and debuted at number 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The Collective disbanded in 2015 to pursue solo careers.

History

2012: The X Factor Australia and formation

In 2012, Trent Bell, Julian De Vizio, Zach Russell, Jayden Sierra and Will Singe successfully auditioned as soloists for the fourth season of The X Factor and progressed to the super bootcamp stage. After failing to make it into the top six of the Under-25 Boys category during super bootcamp, the judges Ronan Keating, Guy Sebastian, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Mel B decided to put them together to form a boy band for the home visits stage, thus qualifying for the Groups category. During home visits, they travelled to London, England and sang Rihanna's "We Found Love", their first song as a group, in front of their mentor Keating and guest mentors One Direction. Keating later selected them, along with Fourtunate and What About Tonight, for the live finals—a series of ten weekly live shows in which contestants are progressively eliminated by public vote. During the official launch for The X Factor at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Sydney on 13 September 2012, Keating announced that the group would be called The Collective. He stated, "We put it up on the web and had a lot of different names and the fans themselves picked it."

The Collective is a group of mountain bikers, filmmakers and photographers that shoot films, ride bikes and take photographs. In 2004 The Collective released it own self-titled film, "The Collective". The film won many high-status awards and soon became known to mountain bikers world over. Since then they have released a second film, Roam, and a third film, Seasons.

The Collective is based in Whistler and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The movies were filmed in 8 major locations including; The Vancouver North Shore Rainforest; Moab, Utah; Whistler Bike Park, British Columbia; Prague, Czech Republic; Sun Valley, Idaho; Parksville, British Columbia; the Atlas Mountains, Morocco; Les Gets, France; and the Interior regions of British Columbia, namely Kamloops. The film took approximately ten months to film.

The Collective is the self-titled debut mini album by Australian boy band The Collective, released on 14 December 2012 by Sony Music Australia. After finishing third in the fourth season of The X Factor in 2012, The Collective began recording the album in Melbourne. The album contains their debut single "Surrender", recorded versions of six songs they performed on The X Factor, and a cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas". The Collective was preceded by the lead single "Surrender", which peaked at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart. Upon release, the album debuted at number 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), denoting shipments of 35,000 copies.

Development and release

After finishing third in the fourth season of The X Factor in 2012, The Collective signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. On 29 November 2012, it was announced on Australian breakfast television program Sunrise that The Collective would be releasing a self-titled mini album. Recording for the album took place in Melbourne on 30 November and ended on 3 December.The Collective was released on 14 December, as both CD and digital download formats. It features recorded versions of six songs they performed on The X Factor, including "Domino", "Footloose", a medley of "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and "Billie Jean", "Like a Prayer", "Lego House", and "Apologize". The album also includes The Collective's debut single "Surrender", and a cover of Wham!'s "Last Christmas".
