Born in New England, raised in North Carolina, and residing principally on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard since the early-1970s, Kate Taylor shared a dual musical heritage with brothers James, Livingston, Hugh, and Alex, who all became accomplished in music. Because of her Southern upbringing, Taylor was deeply rooted in the region’s soul, gospel, and rockabilly sounds, while the stylings of literate folk, pop, and Appalachian music completed that family’s musical legacy. "I’ve been influenced by many musical traditions and they all weave through what I do," explained Taylor on her official website. "My music has at various times been described as pop, folk, rock, rockabilly, country, gospel and R&B.; Growing up in the South, I was exposed to a wonderful diversity of musical styles."
She formed her first band at 15 and had a solo deal with Atlantic four years later. Produced by her manager at the time, Peter Asher, her debut album "Sister Kate" was released in 1971.
Her second album, the 1978 self-titled Kate Taylor, showcasing production work by brother James Taylor and Lew Hahn, was an impressive piece of work; It was well received, and produced another charting hit, "It's in His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)", done as a duet with James. It peaked at 49 on the Billboard charts. The following year Kate Taylor released "It's in There", produced by Barry Beckett at the famed Muscle Shoals studios. The label did not promote the album well and it did not achieve its expected success. After this release Taylor took a break from the music industry to raise her two young daughters, Elizabeth and Aretha. She resurfaced in 2003 after a 23-year sabbatical to release "Beautiful Road". This particular album is a personal one for Taylor. Her longtime manager and husband, Charlie Witham, became ill during its recording and died several months prior to Beautiful Road's April 2003 release. Beautiful Road was dedicated to him.It received high praise, including 3 stars from Rolling Stone magazine, who called it "a heartfelt folk rock gem." In 2003, Taylor resumed her touring career and now plays regularly in New York City, New England and the South. She was a featured performer at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI
In 2005, Taylor released her first live album, Kate Taylor Live at The Cutting Room, a recording of a live concert made the previous year at he famous club in New York City. Tony Garnier, longtime Bob Dylan bandmember, plays bass. Also included are performances with her daughters Aquinnah and Elizabeth, the song "Sea Cruise" with niece Sally Taylor and "You Can Close Your Eyes" with Carly Simon.
In July 2009, Kate Taylor released her first album of all original songs, entitled "Fair Time!" and in September 2009 Kate and Film Truth productions released a documentary DVD called "Tunes from the Tipi and Other Songs from Home." The film traces the Taylor family's and Kate's musical history and journey from Chapel Hill to Martha's Vineyard.
