Jodhpur (/ˈdʒɒdpʊər/ Listen ) is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. After its population crossed a million, it has been declared as the second "Metropolitan City" of Rajasthan. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, the capital of the kingdom known as Marwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar Desert.
The city is known as the "Sun City" for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all the year round. It is also referred to as the "Blue City" due to the vivid blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. It is the hometown of Meghraj Lohiya, a senior BJP Leader and present Chairman (status of Minister of State) of Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation Ltd. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base for travel in a region much frequented by tourists.
Blue City may refer to:
Mehrangarh Fort (Hindi: मेहरानगढ़ का किला) (Sindhi: مهراڻ ڳڙهه), located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in India. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet (125 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.
There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention it is very proudes for rao rajputs.
The Blue is a central market place in Bermondsey an area in London. The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and has about 10 stall holders, selling food and clothes. The area has been known as The Blue for more than two hundred and thirty years and is probably named after the original Blue Anchor public house that gave its name to Blue Anchor Lane. The market has capacity for 24 stalls.
Immediately north of Blue Anchor Lane on an arched viaduct are the multiple railway tracks of the Brighton and South East Main Lines. The Blue Anchor Lane joins St. James's Road where the viaduct arches to the immediate north west contain the remnants of the disused Spa Road railway station which was the original terminus of London's first railway.
In 2005 a Metropolitan Police report described the area as a crime hotspot for "race crime and youth disorder". In 2009 during the funeral procession of Jade Goody a white dove was released at The Blue, where her family once had a stall.
Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, is one of the world's largest private residences. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh of the palace, this edifice has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family. A part of the palace also houses a museum.
Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to use of stones drawn from the Chittar hill where it is located. Ground for the foundations of the building was broken on 18 November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid Singh and the construction work was completed in 1943. The Palace was built to provide employment to thousands of people during the time of famine.
History of building the Umaid Bhawan Palace is linked to a curse by a saint who had said that a period of drought will follow the good rule of the Rathore Dynasty. Thus, after the end of about 50-year reign of Pratap Singh, Jodhpur faced a severe drought and famine conditions in the 1920s for a period of three consecutive years. The farmers of the area faced with famine conditions sought the help of the then king Umaid Singh, who was the 37th Rathore ruler of Marwar at Jhodpur, to provide them with some employment so that they could survive the famine conditions. The king, in order to help the farmers, decided to build a lavish palace. He commissioned Henry Vaughan Lanchester as the architect to prepare the plans for the palace; Lanchester was a contemporary of Sir Edwin Lutyens who planned the buildings of the New Delhi government complex. Lanchester patterned the Umaid Palace on the lines of the New Delhi building complex by adopting the theme of domes and columns. The palace was designed as an extraordinary blend of western technology, and many Indian architectural features.

Traveling India: Jodhpur, the blue city. Second largest city in Rajasthan, expect chaotic streets and beautiful views. The blue-washed buildings of old city Jodhpur with the warm red sandstone glow of Mehrangarh Fort, creates a surreal and mesmerizing experience. The views are especially brilliant at sunrise and sunset. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest, most well preserved forts in India. Relaxing on the rooftops, you almost forget you're in a city. We were grateful to find our quiet little oasis at Singhvi's Haveli near the base of the fort. But as you get further away from the fort, navigating the narrow pathways and streets on foot becomes next to impossible. Join us as we visit Jodhpur in this city travel guide covering the best things to do in the 'Blue City' of Rajasthan, India. Our travel video in Rajasthan (राजस्थान ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ) covering the 'sun city' focusses on visiting Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) for some incredible views of the city and heading over to the Sardar Market (सरदार बाजार) nearby the Ghanta Ghar clock tower of Rajasthan where you can find great places to shop and grab Rajasthani cuisine (राजस्थानी खाना) and a saffron lassi. We especially recommend Jhankar restaurant where we had the best Rajasthani Thali (थाली) and regular Thali during our entire India travels. Jodhpur (जोधपुर) is also worth exploring on foot or tuk-tuk where you can just get lost down the myriad of colorful alleys. For dinner we suggest rooftop views ...

Traveling India: Come explore Udaipur, the City of Lakes in Rajasthan. We spent several days here, enjoying views of the lake and city from the many rooftop restaurants. Walking the streets can be a noisy, sometimes dangerous experience as the streets are narrow, they drive crazy, honk constantly and aren't mindful of pedestrians. But it was all worth it after discovering the best apple pie ever at Cafe Namaste. Next up, Jodhpur, the blue city! xoxo, Christine
