Wombat
Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials that are native to Australia. They are about 1 m (40 in) in length with small, stubby tails. There are three extant species and they are all members of the family Vombatidae. They are adaptable and habitat tolerant, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 ha (740 acres) in Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland.
Evolution and taxonomy
Though genetic studies of the Vombatidae have been undertaken, evolution of the family is not well understood. Wombats are estimated to have diverged from other Australian marsupials relatively early, as long as 40 million years ago, while some estimates place divergence at around 25 million years. While some theories place wombats as a miniaturised relatives of diprotodonts, such as the rhinoceros-sized Diprotodon, more recent studies place the Vombatiformes as having a distinct parallel evolution, hence their current classification as a separate family.

Nugget has had a persistent dry cough and a constant itch. There is no obvious cause other than, perhaps, an allergy to something in his environment. Today I gave him an oatmeal bath to ease his itch, at the same time as giving him a steam bath, which helps his cough for a few days. He was much more compliant than I expected, perhaps because his bath was warm and he was sleepy. He went straight back to sleep afterwards. If this isn't successful we may need to treat him with antihistamine, which we would prefer not to do if we can help it. Bathing a baby wombat
Nugget has had a persistent dry cough and a constant itch. There is no obvious cause other than, perhaps, an allergy to something in his environment. Today I gave him an oatmeal bath to ease his itch, at the same time as giving him a steam bath, which helps his cough for a few days. He was much more compliant than I expected, perhaps because his bath was warm and he was sleepy. He went straight back to sleep afterwards. If this isn't successful we may need to treat him with antihistamine, which we would prefer not to do if we can help it. A zookeeper had her hands full on Wednesday tending to what is believed to be the world's "oldest" and "biggest" Wombat in captivity at the Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria. The wombat, known as Patrick, was hand-raised after being orphaned as a baby and sadly remains a virgin. Wombat attack inside tunnel
A close call with a wombat as it enters the narrow pipeline behind Andrew as he's crawling through it. The wombat is strong, sturdy and built close to the ground with sharp teeth and claws. Their tunneling ability is incredible and they make homes with ease with intricate underground tunnel systems. A close call with a wombat as it enters the narrow pipeline behind Andrew as he's crawling through it.
The wombat is strong, sturdy and built close to the ground with sharp teeth and claws. Their tunneling ability is incredible and they make homes with ease with intricate underground tunnel systems.
Wombats will typically spend many hours each night browsing for food near their home tunnels as they mainly eat grass and other plant material such as shrub, moss, bark and roots and like all Australian mammals the common wombat is a protected Australian species.
