Rosslyn Chapel, formally known as the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew, is a 15th-century chapel located at the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland.
Rosslyn Chapel was founded on a small hill above Roslin Glen as a Catholic collegiate church (with between four and six ordained canons and two boy choristers) in the mid-15th century. The chapel was founded by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness of the Scoto-Norman Sinclair family. Rosslyn Chapel is the third Sinclair place of worship at Roslin, the first being in Roslin Castle and the second (whose crumbling buttresses can still be seen today) in what is now Roslin Cemetery.
The purpose of the college was to celebrate the Divine Office throughout the day and night and also to celebrate Holy Mass for all the faithful departed, including the deceased members of the Sinclair family. During this period the rich heritage of plainsong (a single melodic line) or polyphony (vocal harmony) would be used to enrich the singing of the liturgy. An endowment was made that would pay for the upkeep of the priests and choristers in perpetuity and they also had parochial responsibilities.
Rosslyn can refer to:
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), commonly known as the Knights Templar, the Order of Solomon's Temple (French: Ordre du Temple or Templiers) or simply as Templars, were among the wealthiest and most powerful of the Western Christian military orders and were prominent actors in Christian finance. The organisation existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages.
Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favoured charity throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and power. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. Non-combatant members of the Order managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom, innovating financial techniques that were an early form of banking, and building fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land.
The Templars' existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded. Rumours about the Templars' secret initiation ceremony created distrust, and King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Order, took advantage of the situation. In 1307, many of the Order's members in France were arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and then burned at the stake. Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order in 1312. The abrupt disappearance of a major part of the European infrastructure gave rise to speculation and legends, which have kept the "Templar" name alive into the modern day.
A surname or family name is a name added to a given name. In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with last name because it is usually placed at the end of a person's given name.
In most Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, two or more last names (or surnames) may be used. In China, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Taiwan, Vietnam, and parts of India, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (forename) is far from universal. In many countries, it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
The concept of a "surname" is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a "byname". Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.
The Knights (Ancient Greek: Ἱππεῖς Hippeîs; Attic: Ἱππῆς) was the fourth play written by Aristophanes, the master of an ancient form of drama known as Old Comedy. The play is a satire on the social and political life of classical Athens during the Peloponnesian War and in this respect it is typical of all the dramatist's early plays. It is unique however in the relatively small number of its characters and this was due to its scurrilous preoccupation with one man, the pro-war populist Cleon. Cleon had prosecuted Aristophanes for slandering the polis with an earlier play, The Babylonians (426 BC), for which the young dramatist had promised revenge in The Acharnians (425 BC), and it was in The Knights (424 BC) that his revenge was exacted. The Knights won first prize at the Lenaia festival when it was produced in 424 BC.
The Knights is a satire on political and social life in 5th-century BC Athens, the characters are drawn from real life and Cleon is clearly intended to be the villain. However it is also an allegory, the characters are figures of fantasy and the villain in this context is Paphlagonian, a comic monstrosity responsible for almost everything that's wrong with the world. The identity Cleon=Paphlagonian is awkward and the ambiguities aren't easily resolved. This summary features the real-world names Cleon, Nicias and Demosthenes (though these names are never mentioned in the play). See Discussion for an overview of the ambiguous use of characterization in The Knights.

The legend of Rosslyn Chapel, located about seven miles from the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, helped to inspire a best selling novel and a block buster movie called The Da Vinci Code. The publicity led to a rebirth of sorts and helped pay for a major restoration that's brought the chapel back to what it looked like when it was built in the mid 1400's. Could it be the final resting place of the Holy Grail? What was the connection to the Knights Templar?

Rosslyn Chapel was built as the family chapel of the Sinclair's by William Sinclair after 1547. The art and statuary of the enigmatic building likely define the family legacy and beliefs of the Sinclair's at the time of its construction. Many feel that Rosslyn holds the secret to previously untold of exploration of North America. While this may be true Rosslyn does define some relations between William Sinclair an the Orkney Islands specifically the Ring of Brodgar. The point on earth that Rosslyln occupies may also reference the cult of Santiago as William was said to have been a Knight of Santiago. Thank you.

A short trip to Rosslyn Chapel to see what the Da Vinci Code was all about. Some of us stayed there just for a little while because to us it had an oppressive atmosphere. We've seemed to have picked up the vibes from the past and just had to get out of there.

Rosslyn Chapel is a gothic building. It has associations with the Knights Templar. The invention of modern banking is attributed to the Templar knights and claims have been made that the vast lost treasures of the Knights Templar are buried at Rosslyn. Other enigmas at Rosslyn Chapel relate to the "apprentice's pillar". The "apprentice's pillar" gets it's name from a legend dating from the 18th century which involves a master mason in charge of the stonework in the chapel and his young apprentice. The mason does not believe the apprentice can perform the complicated task of carving the column and is enraged to find the boy managed to do the job successfully. In a fit of jealous anger the mason takes his mallet over the apprentice's head and kills him. As punishment for his crime t...

I spent 9 months I've been thinking about absence and progression
Under this, under this tetra-coloured plane
And now we're finally fading fast
On broken wings and shattered glass
Depart from daylight, lay awake at night
This is isn't what it's like to die
This isn't what it's like to die
Again we're finally fading fast
On broken wings and shattered glass
Depart from daylight, lay awake at night
This is isn't what it's like to die
This isn't what it's like to die
You could have been the sweetest lie I ever tasted
That I can remember
And I know this isn't what it's like to die
Just realizing if I ever learned from the act of flight
Then I'd live through the process of descension
And I'll never come back here again
And I'll never come back here screaming
"For you I bleed life, for you I follow this tetra coloured sky"
And now we're finally fading fast
On broken wings and shattered glass
Depart from daylight, lay awake at night
