Police tried to stop the car after it was seen speeding.

A young man died and three others were injured after the car they were in led police on a three-minute chase in Wairoa.

Police said the 22-year-old Gisborne man was in a car that failed to stop after police tried to pull it over about 7.27pm on Sunday night.

The driver then allegedly fled from police, and at 7.30pm police abandoned the pursuit as they could no longer see the car.

Police said they received a report that a car had crashed on Awamate Rd at 7.38pm.

Another man in the car was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition, but is now stable.

Two other men were taken to Wairoa Hospital for treatment, and have since been discharged.

Police said they have since established the car that crashed was the same one being driven by the fleeing driver in the pursuit just minutes earlier.

A Serious Crash Unit investigation is under way and the pursuit has been referred to the IPCA.
