“Everyone on my team was completely freaked out and scared of it,” says DJ-producer Sam Spiegel in the latest installment of PRØHBTD Cities. “My manager quit because of it.”
What freaked his team out was his groundbreaking video for “Jihad Love Squad.” Spiegel made the track (featuring KRS-One) as part of the music duo N.A.S.A. with DJ Zegon of Brazil, and the 2015 video made the lyrical theme explicit. To quote The Daily Beast, “Can a song change the meaning of ‘jihad’?” Spiegel felt extremists had hijacked (no pun intended) the meaning of the word—i.e., “a spiritual struggle within oneself between good and evil”—and he wanted to recharacterize it as spreading peace and love.
His team feared the Muslim community would object, but those fears were unfounded. “It’s actually really positive for the Muslim community,” Spiegel explains, “and the Muslim community actually embraced it.”
Spiegel is a NYC native now living in Los Angeles. In addition to being a DJ and artist, Spiegel is a music producer and composer who’s worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maroon 5, Ben Lee and major companies like Levi’s, Converse and ESPN, among many others. He scored films like Jackass 3D and Kevin Smith’s Cop Out and served as music director for Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark Tour, and he collaborated with his brother—film director Spike Jonze—on various products, including an Adidas commercial that paired Spiegel’s music and Karen O’s vocals.
In addition to talking about the “Jihad” video, Spiegel gives PRØHBTD Cities a look inside his studio, reveals what famous artist used to live in the building and discusses what’s coming next.

Sam Spiegel
Sam Spiegel (November 11, 1901 – December 31, 1985) was an Austrian-born American independent film producer. He was the first to win the Academy Award for Best Picture three times, and the only one to be the sole producer on all three winning films.
Early life
Samuel P. Spiegel was born to a Jewish family in Jarosław, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now in Poland). His parents were Regina and Simon Spiegel (a tobacco wholesaler). He received his education at the University of Vienna. His brother was Shalom Spiegel, a professor of medieval Hebrew poetry.
Career
Spiegel worked briefly in Hollywood in 1927 following a stint serving with Hashomer Hatzair in Palestine. He then went to Berlin to produce German and French adaptations of Universal films until 1933 when he fled Germany. As an independent producer, Spiegel helped produce a number of European films.
In 1938, he immigrated to Mexico and subsequently the United States.
Between 1935 and 1954, Spiegel billed himself as S. P. Eagle. After that he used his real name. His nickname was the "velvet octopus" after his propensity to entwine himself with women in the back of taxi cabs and manage Hollywood with a velvet touch according to Billy Wilder. He loved London and admired the British as is reflected with his greatest movies Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Lawrence of Arabia won 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, while The Bridge on the River Kwai won 7 including Best Picture. Spiegel was embraced by the British as one of theirs living in Central London yet remained feared by Hollywood for his talent, style, and womanizing.

Los Angeles (
i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.

Turn on the Bright Lights
Turn On the Bright Lights is the debut studio album by the American rock band Interpol, released in August 2002. The album was recorded in November 2001 at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, and was co-produced, mixed and engineered by Peter Katis and Gareth Jones. It was released on August 19, 2002 in the United Kingdom and August 20 in the United States, through independent record label Matador Records. Upon release, the record peaked at number 101 on the UK Albums Chart. It reached number 158 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, as well as spending 73 weeks in the Billboard Independent Albums, peaking at number five.
"PDA", "NYC", "Obstacle 1" and "Say Hello to the Angels" were the singles from Turn On the Bright Lights, and a video was shot for each with the exception of "Say Hello to the Angels".
The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 29, 2011 for shipments of 500,000 copies.
A remastered version of the album was released in 2012 to commemorate its tenth anniversary. It featured additional material including demo recordings of several tracks, the bonus songs previously available on international releases and a DVD of live performances and music videos.

“Everyone on my team was completely freaked out and scared of it,” says DJ-producer Sam Spiegel in the latest installment of PRØHBTD Cities. “My manager quit because of it.”
What freaked his team out was his groundbreaking video for “Jihad Love Squad.” Spiegel made the track (featuring KRS-One) as part of the music duo N.A.S.A. with DJ Zegon of Brazil, and the 2015 video made the lyrical theme explicit. To quote The Daily Beast, “Can a song change the meaning of ‘jihad’?” Spiegel felt extremists had hijacked (no pun intended) the meaning of the word—i.e., “a spiritual struggle within oneself between good and evil”—and he wanted to recharacterize it as spreading peace and love.
His team feared the Muslim community would object, but those fears were unfounded. “It’s actually really positive for the Muslim community,” Spiegel explains, “and the Muslim community actually embraced it.”
Spiegel is a NYC native now living in Los Angeles. In addition to being a DJ and artist, Spiegel is a music producer and composer who’s worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maroon 5, Ben Lee and major companies like Levi’s, Converse and ESPN, among many others. He scored films like Jackass 3D and Kevin Smith’s Cop Out and served as music director for Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark Tour, and he collaborated with his brother—film director Spike Jonze—on various products, including an Adidas commercial that paired Spiegel’s music and Karen O’s vocals.
In addition to talking about the “Jihad” video, Spiegel gives PRØHBTD Cities a look inside his studio, reveals what famous artist used to live in the building and discusses what’s coming next.

As a multitalented musician, expert collaborator, award-winning producer and long-time DJ, Sam Spiegel is truly a passionate artist. His politically conscious project N.A.S.A. has led him on a winding journey since his 2009 debut album 'The Spirit of Apollo'. This album has a list of featured collaborators to rival all other lists, including Kanye West, M.I.A., Tom Waits and more. Even today, Sam continues to work with such artists on a series of projects.
Spiegel has been nominated for a Grammy for his production, a series of major movie scores under his belt including two Spike Jonze films, and as of recently, he's on a come up with N.A.S.A. yet again. His 2015 releases focus most specifically on the ongoing conflicts between the United States and the Middle East, India and Ethiopia, and Brazil and Jamaica.

“Everyone on my team was completely freaked out and scared of it,” says DJ-producer Sam Spiegel in the latest installment of PRØHBTD Cities. “My manager quit because of it.”
What freaked his team out was his groundbreaking video for “Jihad Love Squad.” Spiegel made the track (featuring KRS-One) as part of the music duo N.A.S.A. with DJ Zegon of Brazil, and the 2015 video made the lyrical theme explicit. To quote The Daily Beast, “Can a song change the meaning of ‘jihad’?” Spiegel felt extremists had hijacked (no pun intended) the meaning of the word—i.e., “a spiritual struggle within oneself between good and evil”—and he wanted to recharacterize it as spreading peace and love.
His team feared the Muslim community would object, but those fears were unfounded. “It’s actually really positive for the Muslim community,” Spiegel explains, “and the Muslim community actually embraced it.”
Spiegel is a NYC native now living in Los Angeles. In addition to being a DJ and artist, Spiegel is a music producer and composer who’s worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maroon 5, Ben Lee and major companies like Levi’s, Converse and ESPN, among many others. He scored films like Jackass 3D and Kevin Smith’s Cop Out and served as music director for Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark Tour, and he collaborated with his brother—film director Spike Jonze—on various products, including an Adidas commercial that paired Spiegel’s music and Karen O’s vocals.
In addition to talking about the “Jihad” video, Spiegel gives PRØHBTD Cities a look inside his studio, reveals what famous artist used to live in the building and discusses what’s coming next.
