Loudon Snowden Wainwright III (born September 5, 1946) is a Grammy Award-winning American songwriter, folk singer, humorist, and actor. He is the father of musicians Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche, brother of Sloan Wainwright, and the former husband of the late folk singer Kate McGarrigle.
To date, Wainwright has released 26 studio albums. Reflecting upon his career in 1999, Wainwright stated, "You could characterize the catalog as somewhat checkered, although I prefer to think of it as a tapestry." Loudon Wainwright's songs are represented by Downtown Music Publishing.
Wainwright was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the son of Martha Taylor, a yoga teacher, and Loudon Wainwright, Jr., a columnist and editor for Life magazine. His father was not a professional musician but he did play piano and wrote some songs, exposing his children to musicians such as Tom Lehrer and Stan Freberg who were later cited as influences. Wainwright grew up in Bedford, New York, in Westchester County. Among his sisters is Sloan Wainwright, also a singer. He graduated from St. Andrew's School in Delaware. He is a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Director-General of New Netherland (present-day New York State).
Loudon Wainwright III plays "Your Mother and I". Yes, I know I fucked up the encoding, but it's minor enough to fly, and I can't be bothered to do it again right now.

It's not every day you get to meet and speak with a bona fide legend. Sure, I've met and talked to a lot of amazingly talented musicians, actors, and comedians over the last 2 years I've been doing interviews for ShowbizMonkeys.com. But on the final day of the 2009 Winnipeg Folk Festival, I got the chance to sit down with legendary folk icon Loudon Wainwright III (though he would humbly disagree with being called a legend). Wainwright III has played to audiences large and small worldwide (including several appearances over the years at the Winnipeg Folk Fest), bringing his singing, guitar playing, and occasional comedy to folkies since way back when he was hailed as "the next Bob Dylan" in the late 60s and early 70s. Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties during our inter...
If you have ever dreamed of chatting to the enigmatic, legendary Loudon Wainwright backstage and having him pick up his guitar and sing to you, then this wonderful little Dutch film gem, recorded in 2004, is the next best thing. Watch and be truly mesmerised by the polite, friendly and utterly charming Loudon Wainwright!!! I have been asked a few times to post the whole interview (having previously only posted the songs) so have thankfully now found the time to do this. Homeless Brother - HB to my friends. :-)

I know that fan is moving air
I can see it in your hair
But I can't bear to breathe it in somehow
I'll rise and fall with you
Cause you can't fail me now,
I'll rise and fall with you
Cause you can't fail me now
Salt is sweet upon my mouth
And dark throws sparks against my house
The stain of love's a smudge upon my brow.
But you see through me
And you can't fail me now,
You see right through me
And you can't fail me now
I bit off more than I can chew
It's something that I tend to do
When fewer words are what we need and how
You bite my tongue
And you can't fail me now
I rant and rail
But you can't fail me now
I lost the thread among the vines
And hung myself in story lines
That tell the tales I never would allow
God knows the name of every bird
That fills my mind like angry words
But you know all my secret heart avows...
We're taught to love the worst of us
And mercy more than life, but trust me:
Mercy's just a warning shot across the bow
I live for yours
And you can't fail me now,
I live for your mercy
And you can't fail me now,
