Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta to go to auction

Ferrari is giving you the chance to buy a car that is already sold out.

The Italian brand is offering up a customised LaFerrari Aperta - the last of its kind - to raise money for the Save the Children charity.

The one-off Aperta up for auction has been kitted out in a one-of-a-kind livery of Rosso Fuoco paintwork featuring a Bianco Italia double racing stripe down the front and rear, while the interior features black Alcantara and shiny carbon fibre with red leather inserts on the seats and red stitching.

Ferrari built 209 examples – 200 for customers and nine for publicity purposes – of the convertible hybrid-powered hypercar which were sold out, sight unseen, before the car was revealed.

Based on the LaFerrari Coupe, the Aperta was built to celebrate the Prancing Horse's 70th anniversary, and has a soft-top roof installed, along with reworked underpinnings and aerodynamics.

The Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta is powered by a 6.3-litre V12 coupled with an electric motor that produces a staggering 708kW and 970Nm.

For those lucky enough to be offered the chance to buy one of the 200 Ferrari LaFerrari Apertas, it would have cost about $2.78 million before adding more than $1 million in taxes.

However, simply having the money wasn't enough to buy one of these limited run collectors cars. Ferrari has a stringent ranking system when offering highly sought after limited editions – one that usually rewards the most loyal of Ferrari customers - and no amount of money or political sway will get you one if you are not on that list.

Earlier this year Drive spoke to Enrico Galliera the man responsible to saying no to the world's rich and powerful.

"We have much higher demand than the availability. So what we do is identify criteria that is rewarding good customers. The limited edition cars we consider a gift to our best customers." Said Galliera.

"At the very beginning you receive applications from people who do not deserve, they simply have the money. 'I am the king of something, so I deserve the car,'" said Galliera. "I say 'Yes, but you are not a Ferrari client.'"

This year an American watch and jewellery magnate, David Lee, had a public spat with the Italian brand. Ferrari refused to sell him an Aperta despite the fact that his extensive car collection included 12 Ferraris, and he had ordered four more to boost his ranking. However, he now has his chance to bid for one.

Ferrari only built the LaFerrari Aperta in left-hand drive which makes it unable to be registered on local roads.

However, changes under consideration by state and federal governments would allow highly exclusive limited-run models, like the Aperta, to be granted an exemption. The cars would need to meet certain criteria, such as being limited to vehicles that only have 100 or less units built each year.
