Oval

An oval (from Latin ovum, "egg") is a closed curve in a plane which "loosely" resembles the outline of an egg. The term is not very specific, but in some areas (projective geometry, technical drawing, etc.) it is given a more precise definition, which may include either one or two axes of symmetry. In common English, the term is used in a broader sense: any shape which reminds one of an egg.

The 3-dimensional version of an oval is called an ovoid.

Oval in geometry

The term oval when used to describe curves in geometry is not well-defined, except in the context of projective geometry. Many distinct curves are commonly called ovals or are said to have an "oval shape". Generally, to be called an oval, a plane curve should resemble the outline of an egg or an ellipse. In particular, the common traits that these curves have are:

they are differentiable (smooth-looking),simple (not self-intersecting), convex, closed, plane curves;

their shape does not depart much from that of an ellipse, and

We Love

"We Love" (also known as "We Love to Entertain You") is the theme song for the Star Force image campaign of German television network ProSieben. Since its introduction several variations of the song have been interpreted by various stars, including Melanie C, Sarah Connor, The Pussycat Dolls and Take That. In 2008, German girl band Monrose recorded their own version of the song, produced by Mozart & Friends, which was released as a digital download single on March 20, 2008 (see 2008 in music).

Writing and recording

Penned by Mozart & Friends writers Alexander Gernert, Manuel Loyo, Alexander Hahn and Alexander Krause, commissioned "We Love" was written and composed in a single week, since the song was needed for a video shooting Monrose had already been booked for at the Hangar 7 in Salzburg, Austria. The track was produced by Hahn and team head Marc Mozart, who said "it was extremely fun to work on this production [...] A&R executives Markus Hartmann and Stefan Harder of ProSieben's music department Starwatch trusted that we'd come up with a hot song, so we enjoyed both a lot of creative freedom while being under the pressure of a short deadline."

Nursery rhyme

A nursery rhyme is a traditional poem or song for young children in Britain and many other countries, but usage only dates from the late 18th /early 19th century. In North America the term Mother Goose Rhymes, introduced in the mid-18th century, is still often used.

History

Lullabies

The oldest children's songs of which we have records are lullabies, intended to help a child sleep. Lullabies can be found in every human culture. The English term lullaby is thought to come from "lu, lu" or "la la" sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and "by by" or "bye bye", either another lulling sound, or a term for good night. Until the modern era lullabies were usually only recorded incidentally in written sources. The Roman nurses' lullaby, "Lalla, Lalla, Lalla, aut dormi, aut lacta", is recorded in a scholium on Persius and may be the oldest to survive.

Many medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus take the form of a lullaby, including "Lullay, my liking, my dere son, my sweting" and may be versions of contemporary lullabies. However, most of those used today date from the 17th century. For example, a well known lullaby such as "Rock-a-bye, baby on a tree top", cannot be found in records until the late-18th century when it was printed by John Newbery (c. 1765).

Oval Office

The Oval Office is the official office of the President of the United States. It is located in the West Wing of the White House Complex.

The room features three large south-facing windows behind the president's desk, and a fireplace at the north end. It has four doors: the east door opens to the Rose Garden; the west door leads to a private study and dining room; the northwest door opens onto the main corridor of the West Wing; and the northeast door opens to the office of the president's secretary.

Presidents generally decorate the office to suit their personal taste, choosing new furniture, new drapery, and designing their own oval-shaped carpet to take up most of the floor. Artwork is selected from the White House's own collection, or borrowed from museums for the president's term in office.

Cultural history

The Oval Office has become associated in Americans' minds with the presidency itself through memorable images, such as a young John F. Kennedy, Jr. peering through the front panel of his father's desk, President Richard Nixon speaking by telephone with the Apollo 11 astronauts during their moonwalk, and daughter Amy Carter bringing her Siamese cat Misty Malarky Ying Yang to brighten President Jimmy Carter's day.

This is an easy method for drawing a general-purpose oval shape. This method requires you change your compass setting 3 times, thus, 1-2-3 . If the first setting has radius 1, the second setting has radius 2, and the third setting has radius 3. The largest circle is tangent to both of the smaller circles at the same time, and so it becomes difficult to discern where the curve changes from one circle to the other (after the construction lines have been removed). We are pattern recognizing machines, and so our eyes are quickly fooled into seeing an oval, rather than seeing the intersection of four circles. A similar technique may be used to draw an egg, by changing the size of one of the two smaller circles. Based on the relative popularity of this video, I may make an egg-tutorial in the future. By the way, this is not actually a true ellipse. If you would like to see how to make one of those, follow the link at the end of this video.
