The car exploded into flames near Darling Harbour leaving three people dead and another person is battling serious injuries.
Superintendent Paul Pisanos from Sydney City Local Area Command said the Nissan GT-R high-performance car was "speeding as it came down Goulburn street" before it hit a guard rail outside the Novotel Rockford hotel at the corner of Harbour and Pier Streets, flipped and burst into flames.
"Speed - and considerable speed at that - along with a loss of control are two contributing factors [in the crash]," he said.

Police who attempted to save Steve and Jeff Nasr and the female passenger from the burning wreckage were "extremely traumatised", Superintendent Pisanos said.
"Three young male police officers and a female police officer, all of varying experience, put their own welfare and lives on the line ... to try and extinguish what was quite a volatile fire and to try and save [lives]."

Another friend wrote: "Waking up to the worst news...Steve and Jeff Nasr may you rest in eternal peace. I can't believe the news."
Peter Sergeant, who was staying at the Novotel, said the crash "was loud enough that I thought it was a bomb".
"Then there was this heap of fire just below our window. We saw a group of people dragging someone along the footpath," Mr Sergeant said.
Police from the Sydney City Local Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
