What is a Contrarian in the Stock Market and Should You Be One?
★ SUMMARY ★
In this week’s episode what I’d like to share with you is the definition of a Contrarian and should you be a contrarian.
If you don’t know what a Contrarian is, at least in terms of the stock market, it’s someone who goes against the grain or takes an opposite side approach to what the majority of the people do in the stock market.
For example if everybody’s going along or going for the upside and assuming stocks will continue going higher, the contrarian would say, short. On the other hand, if everybody’s thinking the stock market is going to head lower, the contrarian or the opposing view would be for stocks to pop and go higher.
The contrarian approach is typically something that a lot of investors talk about is that “Oh, I’m a Contrarian, or I take the opposite of what the majority does”, and you might be wondering, “Okay, should I be a contrarian? And should I do with this way or that way? Or what is the best approach”.
First off, I do want to give you some insight, the thing is that you never really know where the full majority of traders or positions of people really are, you can see what’s happening with the market as looking at the charts and seeing the reflection of what’s happening with the effect, so if there’s a lot of buying happening, you can see that the stock market has been heading higher.
However, you never know if you’re going to get an influx of more buying coming in to the stock market, or if you’re going to get a lot of selling. Typically, the way I like to approach is looking at it like a rubber band or stretching things out.
Here, I have few rubber bands that are attached, so when I look at the market and when I’m looking at trades taking place and looking at the charts, I’m actually looking to see how far that stock or the market has been stretched and the further it’s stretched from the middle, so the middle would be right around this area.
Looking at the middle between my two fingers right here, you’re looking at how far is the stretch from that middle or center point, so think of that center point as a balance beam or an active balance or acting like a seesaw.
That would be your middle point right here, so what you’re looking for is how far is it being stretched from that middle or center point, if stocks are moving higher, you can see that it continues to stretch very high and then eventually things will come back.
The same thing on the opposite end of the spectrum, so if they’re pressing lower or stocks are selling off eventually things will pop back up and that is because it’s over stretched, either oversold or to the upside over bought.
What you’re doing if you’re a contrarian, is you’re seeing how far things are stretched from this rubber band or from this center point, right there. So from the center point right here if I did it this way, you can see how far things are stretched either to the right or to the left.
That’s really what you’re doing, is you’re looking to see if things are a little bit too high and stocks are moving to that upside, what you want to do now is be the contrarian and play it short because eventually things will come back down.

Foreign exchange market
The foreign exchange market (forex, FX, or currency market) is a global decentralized market for the trading of currencies. This includes all aspects of buying, selling and exchanging currencies at current or determined prices. In terms of volume of trading, it is by far the largest market in the world. The main participants in this market are the larger international banks. Financial centres around the world function as anchors of trading between a wide range of multiple types of buyers and sellers around the clock, with the exception of weekends. The foreign exchange market does not determine the relative values of different currencies, but sets the current market price of the value of one currency as demanded against another.
The foreign exchange market works through financial institutions, and it operates on several levels. Behind the scenes banks turn to a smaller number of financial firms known as “dealers,” who are actively involved in large quantities of foreign exchange trading. Most foreign exchange dealers are banks, so this behind-the-scenes market is sometimes called the “interbank market”, although a few insurance companies and other kinds of financial firms are involved. Trades between foreign exchange dealers can be very large, involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Because of the sovereignty issue when involving two currencies, forex has little (if any) supervisory entity regulating its actions.

Jack Ma
Jack Ma or Ma Yun(Chinese: 马云; born September 10, 1964) is a Chinese business magnate and philanthropist. He is the founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a family of successful Internet-based businesses. He is the first mainland Chinese entrepreneur to appear on the cover of Forbes. As of November 2014, he is the richest man in China (Hong Kong not included) and 18th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $24.1 billion, according to Forbes.
Early life
Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. His parents were traditional musician-storytellers. At an early age, Ma developed a desire to learn English, so he rode his bicycle each morning to a nearby hotel to converse with foreigners. He would guide them around the city for free to practice and improve his English. He did this for nine years. He became pen pals with one of these foreigners, and she nicknamed him "Jack", because his real Chinese name was too difficult to pronounce.
Later in his youth, and although he failed the university entrance exam three times, Ma attended Hangzhou Teacher's Institute (currently known as Hangzhou Normal University) and graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in English. While at school, Ma was elected student chairman. He became a lecturer in English and International Trade at the Hangzhou Dianzi University and later enrolled at Beijing-based Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB), graduating in 2006.

Peter Andreas Thiel (born October 11, 1967) is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, hedge fund manager, and social critic. What is a Contrarian in the Stock Market and Should You Be One?

In this week’s episode what I’d like to share with you is the definition of a Contrarian and should you be a contrarian.
If you don’t know what a Contrarian is, at least in terms of the stock market, it’s someone who goes against the grain or takes an opposite side approach to what the majority of the people do in the stock market.
For example if everybody’s going along or going for the upside and assuming stocks will continue going higher, the contrarian would say, short. On the other hand, if everybody’s thinking the stock market is going to head lower, the contrarian or the opposing view would be for stocks to pop and go higher.
The contrarian approach is typically something that a lot of investors talk about is that “Oh, I’m a Contrarian, or I take the opposite of what the majority does”, and you might be wondering, “Okay, should I be a contrarian? And should I do with this way or that way? Or what is the best approach”.
First off, I do want to give you some insight, the thing is that you never really know where the full majority of traders or positions of people really are, you can see what’s happening with the market as looking at the charts and seeing the reflection of what’s happening with the effect, so if there’s a lot of buying happening, you can see that the stock market has been heading higher.
However, you never know if you’re going to get an influx of more buying coming in to the stock market, or if you’re going to get a lot of selling. Typically, the way I like to approach is looking at it like a rubber band or stretching things out.
Here, I have few rubber bands that are attached, so when I look at the market and when I’m looking at trades taking place and looking at the charts, I’m actually looking to see how far that stock or the market has been stretched and the further it’s stretched from the middle, so the middle would be right around this area.
Looking at the middle between my two fingers right here, you’re looking at how far is the stretch from that middle or center point, so think of that center point as a balance beam or an active balance or acting like a seesaw.
That would be your middle point right here, so what you’re looking for is how far is it being stretched from that middle or center point, if stocks are moving higher, you can see that it continues to stretch very high and then eventually things will come back.
The same thing on the opposite end of the spectrum, so if they’re pressing lower or stocks are selling off eventually things will pop back up and that is because it’s over stretched, either oversold or to the upside over bought.
What you’re doing if you’re a contrarian, is you’re seeing how far things are stretched from this rubber band or from this center point, right there. So from the center point right here if I did it this way, you can see how far things are stretched either to the right or to the left.
That’s really what you’re doing, is you’re looking to see if things are a little bit too high and stocks are moving to that upside, what you want to do now is be the contrarian and play it short because eventually things will come back down.

A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Ozan grew up in a family of no English speakers. He learned English as a second language and moved to the United States by himself at 17 to attend Cornell University and major in planetary science, his childhood dream.
While there, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers–Spirit and Opportunity–to Mars. He built stuff that went to the red planet and wrote code that snaps photos of the Martian surface.
Then, he walked away from it all and became a law professor to influence others to make interplanetary leaps on this planet. He graduated first in his class from law school, earning the highest grade point average in his law school’s history since the introduction of the 4-point grading scale. Listen up, you will enjoy his razor-sharp mind.

A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Ozan grew up in a family of no English speakers. He learned English as a second language and moved to the United States by himself at 17 to attend Cornell University and major in planetary science, his childhood dream.
While there, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers–Spirit and Opportunity–to Mars. He built stuff that went to the red planet and wrote code that snaps photos of the Martian surface.
Then, he walked away from it all and became a law professor to influence others to make interplanetary leaps on this planet. He graduated first in his class from law school, earning the highest grade point average in his law school’s history since the introduction of the 4-point grading scale. Sibesh Kar, a BITsian barely in his 20s talks about asking the right question. "We have the answers around us no doubt, but the right question? Now that draws the line between you and a commoner". Sibesh talks about how important it is to not take the word 'unique' as a general word of advice, but as the only solution to be a baron in that sector. He talks about how he has got the opportunity to be part of the 'Hyperloop' initiative and how the game is all about 'why' & 'why Not!
Sibesh Kar, a third year undergraduate at BITS Pilani, at just the age of 20, is the founder and team leader of India's largest multi-disciplinary multi-campus student-driven team, Hyperloop India, spread across all three Indian BITS campuses as well as Indian School of Business and IIM-A, focusing on both the engineering and business aspects of leapfrogging India's ailing transport infrastructure. After his first year, Sibesh was selected on a global basis to do physics research under Dr. Stephen Wolfram, and after his second year to expand on his work on the physics of cellular automata at CSAIL, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An expert generalist, Sibesh believes that his stints with physics have given him the first-principles thinking framework required to quickly adapt to the challenges of working on the Hyperloop, a fifth mode of transport first proposed by SpaceX/Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
