Man dies after Caroline Springs restaurant fight

A man stabbed in a fight in a restaurant in Caroline Springs in Melbourne's west has died a short time after paramedics arrived at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pixie Fuhrmeister said the brawl broke out about 2am after the venue owners tried to lock the group out of the Macedonian restaurant.

The homicide squad detective said the group fled the scene and police are urging any witnesses including those at the party to contact them. The group left on foot after the victim was stabbed multiple times – but they were believed to have several cars nearby, she said.

The victim has been named as 31-year-old Burnside Heights man Deni Dimovski.

The restaurant's owners Jim and Jasmina Ribarovski said Mr Dimovski had been more than a loyal customer.

"He was also a very close personal friend who unfortunately lost his life in the most tragic circumstances," Mr Ribarovski said.

"He was the most caring, genuine and helpful person we have known, always putting others first and willing to give a helping hand when needed.

"He will be sorely missed and never forgotten."

A worker named Coby said Mr Dimovski had become like family.

"He was a beautiful man," she said.

"Deni was a very respectful guy, he always looked after us girls at the Korzo Grill House.

"Deni was always full of light, he was a fun man and loved to party.

"He's a long way from home in such a tragic time, but we will always remember Deni and he will forever be in all of our hearts."

There are no reports the group arrived armed and police believe the assailant used a knife obtained from the restaurant. Homicide police now have the weapon.

The door and several objects within the restaurant were broken during the brawl.

Emergency services were called to the Gourlay Road restaurant about 2.15am Saturday.

Paramedics attempted to treat the man at the scene but he died shortly afterwards.

The Macedonian restaurant's website advertises itself as being open until midnight. Live videos from the restaurant on social media from around midnight on Friday night show dozens of people inside the restaurant dancing and singing to traditional music.

Videos from earlier in the night show a birthday cake as well as children at the party however Detective Senior Sergeant Fuhrmeister said police did not believe there were children present at the time the brawl broke out.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
