Rarely has a screen adaptation of a work of classic literature been pulled off with as much intelligence, power, and artistry as James Ivory and Ismail Merchant’s film of E. M. Forster’s Howards End. James Ivory (director)
James Francis Ivory (born June 7, 1928) is an American film director. For many years he worked extensively with Indian-born film producer Ismail Merchant, his personal as well as professional partner, and with screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. All three were principals in Merchant Ivory Productions whose films won six Academy Awards.
Background
Ivory was born in Berkeley, California, the son of Hallie Millicent (née de Loney) and Edward Patrick Ivory, a sawmill operator. He is of Irish and French descent, and grew up in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
He attended the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts, from which he received a degree in fine arts in 1951. He then attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he directed the short film Four in the Morning, (1953). He wrote, photographed, and produced Venice: Theme and Variations, a half-hour documentary submitted as his thesis film for his Master's degree in cinema. The film was named by The New York Times in 1957 as one of the ten best non-theatrical films of the year. He graduated from USC in 1957.

Rarely has a screen adaptation of a work of classic literature been pulled off with as much intelligence, power, and artistry as James Ivory and Ismail Merchant’s film of E. M. Forster’s Howards End. In her star-making, Oscar-winning performance, an effulgent Emma Thompson plays Margaret Schlegel, a liberal-minded, middle-class Londoner in Edwardian England whose fate becomes intertwined with the upper-crust Wilcoxes, Henry and Ruth (Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave), as well as the working-class Leonard Bast (Samuel West), both due to dalliances of her free-spirited sister, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter). James Francis Ivory (born June 7, 1928) is an American film director, best known for the results of his long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions, which included both Indian-born film producer Ismail Merchant, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Their films won six Academy Awards. Ivory was born in Berkeley, California, the son of Hallie Millicent (née De Loney) and Edward Patrick Ivory, a sawmill operator. He is of Irish and French descent, and grew up in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Rarely has a screen adaptation of a work of classic literature been pulled off with as much intelligence, power, and artistry as James Ivory and Ismail Merchant’s film of E. M. Forster’s Howards End. In her star-making, Oscar-winning performance, an effulgent Emma Thompson plays Margaret Schlegel, a liberal-minded, middle-class Londoner in Edwardian England whose fate becomes intertwined with the upper-crust Wilcoxes, Henry and Ruth (Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave), as well as the working-class Leonard Bast (Samuel West), both due to dalliances of her free-spirited sister, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter). He was educated at the University of Oregon, majoring in Architecture and Fine Arts and then at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he directed the short film Four in the Morning (1953).
Then he wrote, photographed, and produced Venice: Theme and Variations a half-hour documentary submitted as a thesis film for his degree in cinema at USC. The film was named by The New York Times in 1957 as one of the ten best non-theatrical films of the year. He graduated from USC in 1957.
In 1961, Ivory created the film production company, Merchant Ivory Productions, with Indian-born producer Ismail Merchant and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who served as the screenwriter for many of their productions. Until Merchant's death in 2005, the company produced a number of award winning films. Of this collaboration, Ismail Merchant once commented: "IT IS a strange marriage we have at Merchant Ivory ... I am an Indian Muslim, Ruth is a German Jew, and Jim is a Protestant American. Someone once described us as a three-headed god. Maybe they should have called us a three-headed monster!"
Merchant was also Ivory's long-term life partner. Their professional and romantic partnership lasted from the early 1960s until Merchant's death in 2005.
In 1985 A Room with a View, based on the E. M. Forster novel, was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Jhabvala's adaptation of Forster's novel as well as for Best Costume and Best Production Design. A Room With a View was also voted Best Film of the year by the Critic's Circle Film Section of Great Britain, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the National Board of Review in the United States and in Italy, where the film won the Donatello Prize for Best Foreign Language Picture and Best Director.
In 1987, Maurice received a Silver Lion Award for Best director at the Venice Film Festival as well as Best Film Score for Richard Robbins and Best Actor Awards for co-stars James Wilby and Hugh Grant.
This was followed in 1990 by Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, which was adapted by Ruth Jhabvala from the novels by Evan S. Connell. This film received an Oscar nomination for best Actress (Joanne Woodward), as well as Best Actress and Best Screenplay from the New York Film Critics Circle.
In 1992 Ivory directed another Forster-adapted film, Howards End. The film was nominated for nine Academy awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three: Best Actress (Emma Thompson), Best Screenplay -- Adaptation (Ruth Prawer Jhabvala), and Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Luciana Arrighi/Ian Whittaker). At the 58 Film Festival in Pula received a great American director James Ivory, which is dedicated to the festival retrospectives. Ivory will be tonight (Wednesday, July 13th) at 21.30 at the Pula Castle personally present his film 'The White Countess "with Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson.
On Saturday, 16 July will hold a press conference starting at 13:15 Festival Centre, and that evening they will be during the opening ceremony at the Arena awarded the Golden Arena for life contribution to film art.
Finally, on Sunday, 17th July at 19 hours will talk with the audience after the screening of his film 'Bostonians' which concludes its retrospective in Pula. Eight films from the retrospective will perform in Zagreb in the Metropolis Art Cinema MSU of 17 July

Cyber theft has long replaced the 'traditional' concept of bank robberies. A much more sophisticated method of attack that has been in use for years has accelerated of late as a slew of hacks across the world has proven.
Recent international targets, including the US Federal Reserve, the Central Bank of the Philippines and Qatar National Bank (QNB) in Doha, have all been subject to notable security breaches.
What's striking, however, is the fact that in some instances, no money is being stolen. In QNB's case it was a robbery of data - hundreds of customers account details, including their passwords, their social media profiles, were posted onto a whistleblower website. No one really knows what's behind it, but it proved that data is alomost more valuable that money these days.
Where once the main purpose behind this activity was to make money, hacking and leaking information has now escalated into issues as prominent as state secrets, government intelligence and political gain as part of the 'hacktivism' movement.
With safety of the consumer remaining an issue due to the slow-paced movements of the enterprise world versus that of the ever-evolving technological capacity of the hacking world, the public is forced to brace for further and harder hitting attacks in times to come.
We talk to James Lyne, director at the London-based Sans Security Institute and the global head of Research of SOPHOS, about the impact of cyber theft and the future cyber crime.
We also talk to Nourulddin Aulabi, a former professor of information security at Strayer University and a cyber security consultant, about the issues behind cyber attacks.

Set at Cambridge University in the early 1900's, upper-crust, DDG Maurice Hall (James Wilby) has a brief, intense affair - "lovers in "body, mind, and soul" - with a fellow student, the wealthy, DDDG* Clive Durham (Hugh Grant). Ultimately, Durham rejects him, opting for the safety, in a repressive age, of a conventional married life.
As Maurice begins to accept his homosexuality, one of the Durham family's servants, the young, DDG Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves), falls in love with him and initiates a passionate affair. It founders, broken by class-differences, and the knowledge that to turn toward each other, they will be forced to turn away from the lives they've known.
Finally, at a clandestine nighttime meeting at a boathouse on the Durham estate, they reunite. Though we don't know what the future will bring them, it seems possible that - in their eyes alone and with barely a word - they have married.

I don't think I'll ever again take the time to do something like this. However, as it did for so many people - particularly gay men - Maurice had a really deep affect on me (obviously.) Hope you like it. I also hope that any violations of copyright are understood by people associated with Maurice, to be an admirer's tribute to the film.

Earlier this month, English director Andrew Haigh visited Criterion for a screening of his new film, 45 YEARS, and he was joined by his movie’s star, the exquisite Charlotte Rampling. The film, based on a short story by David Constantine, presents a quietly heartbreaking examination of a marriage under pressure, and pairs Rampling with fellow screen legend Tom Courtenay: the duo play a retired couple whose peaceful, stable life is rocked when they receive a bit of surprising news from the past. While the story might seem worlds away from WEEKEND, Haigh’s breakout 2011 drama about two young men whose one night stand develops into a love affair, the director’s affinity for intimate, delicately observed stories about the complexities of relationships is ever-present.

Essentially, the event pairs famous Merchant Ivory films with complimenting films, and I have to say, the pairings are considerably accurate. This way of assessing and analyzing cinema will be a cinephiles delight; discovering the correlating themes, or ways of telling a story cinematically, is just too good of an event to pass by.

Director James Ivory joined Film Society Editorial Director Michael Koresky in discussion about his Oscar-winning 1992 film 'Howards End' following a screening in a new digital restoration at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Rarely has a screen adaptation of a work of classic literature been pulled off with as much intelligence, power, and artistry as James Ivory and Ismail Merchant’s film of E. M. Forster’s Howards End. In her star-making, Oscar-winning performance, an effulgent Emma Thompson plays Margaret Schlegel, a liberal-minded, middle-class Londoner in Edwardian England whose fate becomes intertwined with the upper-crust Wilcoxes, Henry and Ruth (Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave), as well as the working-class Leonard Bast (Samuel West), both due to dalliances of her free-spirited sister, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter). The Merchant-Ivory team’s renowned attention to detail and emotion is here put in the service of a complex and penetrating study of irreconcilable class issues, in which a story of inheritance—of Ruth’s splendid country home, Howards End—comes to stand in for the future of an entire country. Set at Cambridge University in the early 1900's, upper-crust, DDG Maurice Hall (James Wilby) has a brief, intense affair - "lovers in "body, mind, and soul" - with a fellow student, the wealthy, DDDG* Clive Durham (Hugh Grant). Ultimately, Durham rejects him, opting for the safety, in a repressive age, of a conventional married life.
As Maurice begins to accept his homosexuality, one of the Durham family's servants, the young, DDG Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves), falls in love with him and initiates a passionate affair. It founders, broken by class-differences, and the knowledge that to turn toward each other, they will be forced to turn away from the lives they've known.
Finally, at a clandestine nighttime meeting at a boathouse on the Durham estate, they reunite. Though we don't know what the future will bring them, it seems possible that - in their eyes alone and with barely a word - they have married.

I only included scenes, and portions of scenes, clearly reflecting the relationships between Maurice, Durham and Scudder. I also left out scenes and moments that, while focused directly on the experience of being gay, weren't necessary to tell the essential story, and, for me, got in the way of showing complex, intimate, and very romantic relationships between men.
I don't think I'll ever again take the time to do something like this. However, as it did for so many people - particularly gay men - Maurice had a really deep affect on me (obviously.) Hope you like it. I also hope that any violations of copyright are understood by people associated with Maurice, to be an admirer's tribute to the film.
