Norman Antony "Tony" Hart (15 October 1925 – 18 January 2009) was an English artist and children's television presenter. He started off as an officer in a Gurkha regiment but became famous for being a children's presenter and artist on television shows such as Vision On, Playbox, Take Hart and Hartbeat, often accompanied by Morph. He also created the Blue Peter ship logo.
Hart was interested in drawing from an early age. He attended All Saints, Margaret Street Resident Choir School and then Clayesmore School in Dorset, where art was his best subject.
He left school in 1944 and wanted to join the Royal Air Force, but as he would have been unable to fly owing to slightly deficient eyesight, he instead signed up with the British Indian Army and served as an officer in the 1st Gurkha Rifles. After the war, he was told that low-ranked British officers would be replaced by Indian officers when India became independent and he decided to leave the army.
After being demobilised, Hart decided to become a professional artist and studied art at Maidstone College of Art, which later became Kent Institute of Art & Design (and is now the Maidstone campus of the University for the Creative Arts). He graduated in 1950 and, after working as a display artist in a London store, became a freelance artist. The outbreak of the Korean War (25 June 1950) saw him being re-commissioned in the Territorial Army, attached to the Royal Artillery, from 23 November 1948 to 1 July 1950 (?).
Take Hart is a British children's television show about art, presented by Tony Hart. It took over from Vision On, and ran from 1977 until 1983. The show featured Hart and the animated Plasticine character Morph, and other characters created by David Sproxton like 'Smoulder the Moulder', which was a lump of mould which would create props by 'spraying' them out of a spray can. The only other human to appear on a regular basis was Mr Bennett, the caretaker, played by Colin Bennett. The programme won a BAFTA award for Hart in 1984.
As well as demonstrating small-scale projects (the type that viewers might be able to do), Hart also created large-scale artworks on the TV studio floor, and even used beaches and other open spaces as 'canvases' (to be viewed from a camera-crane). This idea was later adopted by Art Attack.
A regular feature of the show was 'The Gallery', which displayed artworks sent in by young viewers. The easy-listening vibraphone music accompanying this feature - "Left Bank Two", composed by Wayne Hill - has passed into British TV musical lore. In later series, "Left Bank Two" alternated with John Williams' recording of "Cavatina", which is also well-remembered by many viewers.

An audio clip of Tony Hart being contacted by phone on his birthday by the Christian O'Connell show on XFM. Tony was at home drawing an African snail which I had contacted him to draw for my then girlfriend who had one named Eeyore. The drawing of the snail in the video is the actual one we received from Tony Hart. I grew up watching Tony Hart and his passing was a sad loss to us all. Hope you enjoy.

"you're probably..the most famous artist in Britain.." This is one of the last clips of Tony Hart on mainstream television. Also, did you know that Tony Hart was in an episode of BANZAI, 'faking it' as a youth club DJ..? He had a great sense of humour in general! ;) ......Tony with Ricky Gervais 2000..Have to agree about Tracey Emin, although you shouldn't blame Vision On for her 'talent'..In this full interview Tony Hart and Ricky Gervais discuss, among other things, Leonardo and the his drawr-ins, Van Gogh, prostitutes..hmmmn Hart plays it straight (which is default anyway) in the tongue-in-cheek show while Gervais takes conversation into uncharted directions, (and Penny Smith doesn't participate much - really not on..but also quite wise) ****Though I didn't like parts of it, the ...

Looking back to the memory of
The dance we shared 'before the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have chanced it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
