The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (reporting marks B&O, BO) is one of the oldest railroads in the United States and the first common carrier railroad. It came into being mostly because the city of Baltimore wanted to compete with the newly constructed Erie Canal (which served New York City) and another canal being proposed by Pennsylvania, which would have connected Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. At first this railroad was located entirely in the state of Maryland with an original line from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook. At this point to continue westward, it had to cross into Virginia (now West Virginia) over the Potomac River, adjacent to the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. From there it passed through Virginia from Harpers Ferry to a point just west of the junction of Patterson Creek and the North Branch Potomac River where it crossed back into Maryland to reach Cumberland. From there it was extended to the Ohio River at Wheeling and a few years later also to Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Baltimore (/ˈbɔːltᵻˌmɔːr/, locally: [ˈbɔɫ.mɔɻ]) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Maryland, and the 26th-most populous city in the country. It is the largest independent city in the United States. Baltimore has more public monuments than any other city per capita in the country and is home to some of the earliest National Register historic districts in the nation, including Fell's Point (1969), Federal Hill (1970) and Mount Vernon Place (1971). More than 65,000 properties, or roughly one in three buildings in the city, are listed on the National Register, more than any other city in the nation.
Founded in 1729, Baltimore is the second largest seaport in the Mid-Atlantic. Baltimore's Inner Harbor was once the second leading port of entry for immigrants to the United States and a major manufacturing center. After a decline in major manufacturing, industrialization and rail transportation, Baltimore shifted to a service-oriented economy, with the Johns Hopkins Hospital (founded 1889), and Johns Hopkins University (founded 1876), now the city's top two employers.
Ohio i/oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.
The state takes its name from the Ohio River. The name originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river" or "large creek." Partitioned from the Northwest Territory, the state was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Six Presidents of the United States have been elected who had Ohio as their home state.

Linking 13 Great States with the Nation — that was the slogan of the B&O; Railroad. Step back to the 1950s and '60s to see what made the Baltimore & Ohio one of the all-time great railroads! The action takes place in Ohio and Pennsylvania, starting in 1954 when steam was king. Articulated locomotives, Mikes, Big Sixes, and many other types of steam power roll past the camera. You'll catch the action at the Lorain ore dock where steam trains unload ships laden with iron ore and will also spend time watching the steam switchers at Rossford Yard in Toledo. Then you'll get a look at E- and F-units and Geeps in the classic B&O; paint scheme. This home video footage, copied from VHS, shows 1980's freight action from Harpers Ferry, WV, along the former Baltimore and Ohio mainline. Both Chessie (Chesapeake and Ohio) and B&O; diesels can be seen, along with a Seaboard diesel mixed in. Plus, there are some pretty cool freight cars in the second and third freights as well. Enjoy this look back!

MORE: http://www.sundayriverproductions.com/5-star-steam/baltimore-and-ohio This is about Baltimore and Ohio steam engines operating in the ‘40s and ‘50s. The Chicago division was the last to be dieselized on the B&O;, and this is primarily about that division. And it is particularly about the pride of the B&O;, their roller-bearing T-3 Mountain, which they built themselves at the Mt. Clare Shops in Baltimore. What the Berkshire was to the Nickel Plate, what the Niagara was to the New York Central, the T-3 was to the B&O.; When it came to big steam, the Baltimore and Ohio did their own thinking.

Join me as I adventure and explore an old graveyard and an old railroad line that used to be called the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. I talk about the history of the area to include how Stonewall Jackson stole the rolling stock from the RR Company when he probably should have not done that. It was a most enjoyable jaunt.
