Travel tips: What's there to do in Canada in December that isn't skiing?

TRAVELLING TO VANCOUVER FOR A FAMILY CHRISTMAS, LOOKING TO ADD TWO TO THREE WEEKS BEFORE OR AFTER. WE ARE NOT SKIERS AND HAVE SEEN MOST OF THE US WEST COAST FROM LA NORTH. G. MCINNES, CHELTENHAM, VIC

Even in Vancouver, which is balmy by Canadian standards, extreme cold puts the dampener on just about anything you might want to do outdoors apart from snow sports, and two to three weeks is a long time to spend in art galleries, restaurants or shopping malls. That's the reason much of Canada heads south for a couple of weeks over winter, and you might want to follow suit.

The hot spots are Central America and the Caribbean, with Cuba as a long-standing favourite. While you could do it yourself, a guided tour would be a better way to go if you've never travelled in that region.

Peregrine Adventures (peregrineadventures.com) has a good choice of tours in Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Peregrine also has a new cruising division and they can put you on a small-ship cruise to see the best of Costa Rica or Cuba. Bunnik Tours (bunniktours.com.au) also has some great options for guided tours in Central and South America.
