From the top of the Arc de Triomphe staircase looking down. For me it wasn't so much the snail shell pattern as the worn stair treads. Imagine how many people have walked those stairs since August 1806 ... Photo: Jo Furbank -
The Esala Perahera festival is held in Kandy, Sri Lanka each year. With musicians, dancers, jugglers and decorated elephants it is one of the major Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka . Photo: Mike Clements -

My wife & I went to Tromso, Norway in October 2015 in search of the northern lights. We joined a small tour group on two successive nights, travelling for several hours all the way into Finland in search of clear skies. On the second night the sky cleared and the lights performed their magic. With a campfire to help keep us warm it was a truly unforgettable experience. Photo: Ian Wilkinson -
Lamu Island just off the northern coast of Kenya is a World Heritage site, the world's best surviving example of Swahili culture, that mixture of Africa and Arabia created by a millennium of trade along the African coast. Yet there is nothing of the “museum” about it: it's a small, simple working town and in the early morning, the dhows still line the waterfront waiting for their day’s work. Photo: Peter Willadsen -
Walking down the streets of Old Riga, the capital city of the Baltic state of Latvia, in search of a memory of the birth pace of my late grandfather . This was it, captured whilst on the Baltic cruise with my wife in August 2016. Photo: Richard Shakenovsky -
We were fortunate to be in the 15th century castle in Savonlinna, Finland in August for a concert celebrating 100 years of Finnish independence from Russia. The lighting was magnificent, and here you can see one of the performers climbing the stairs from the stage, lit against the original ancient walls. Photo: PETER MORTON -
Shot from a moving Tuk Tuk on the road down from Liptons Seat, Haputale, Sri Lanka, we were on our way to the Dambatenne Tea Factory, I noticed this couple sitting outside their brightly coloured house. I noticed how they were perfectly framed by the fence and doorway, but only had a split second to get the shot as we drove by. It is particular memorable as I recall the woman looking straight down the camera at me. Photo: Dean Harris Harris -
